  • Less than a week ago the pilot for the indie animated project Lackadaisy released after many years of production, and I mean, WOW. What can I even say. This thing is absolutely stunning, an incredible achievement on every level. The entire history of this project is wildly impressive. It is SO cool to see such a gorgeous, creative pilot come to fruition, and going back to look at the long history of the idea, and the journey it took to get to this point is wildly inspiring. And it seems to have been very well rewarded with over 4 million views in this first week, and hundreds of thousands of new subscribers to their youtube channel. And I think this REALLY bodes well for the future of indie animation. So in this video I wanna look back at the entire history of Lackadaisy, what it took to reach this point, and what the future looks like for not only the project, but indie animation in general.

      Imo Lackadaisy blows Helluva out of the water. The author is a master of characterization and world building and as long as she maintains creative control, I think it’s going to do great things. Helluva kind of turned into a hot mess; I don’t think it’s as well written/crafted. No hate, it’s fun, it’s just not on the Lackadaisy level

      @@alexmansfield3268 this is exactly how it is with the Omori Game. It's concept and production was before Undertale but because it took like 8 years to finally be complete and be released, like 5-6 years after Undertale, it often gets compared to Undertale and judged as if it is an Undertale-inspired game.

    • @acanimatics906
      @acanimatics906 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I belive the reasons for the deviations are that they needed to introduce as many of the main players aswell as just sweet and shortly make it clear what the plot's even about. The first chapters of the comic are great but I don't think they would have worked for a pilot episode. Since the point of a pilot is to just quickly and simply introduce the concept of a show. It's to pitch the idea and put it out there in hopes it'll get picked up and funded so a show can be produced.

    I really enjoyed how this pilot conveyed how Mordecai is a calculating professional from how he recognizes the type of pistol being fired at him and starts counting the shots in the pistol and comes out of cover when the pistol needs to be reloaded. As well as deciding not to shoot because he knows it is unlikely his shot is going find its mark.

    As somebody who saw it uploaded and sent to my recommended around 4 hours after release I can tell you I have watched the pilot over 6 or 7 times now. I absolutely loved this pilot and I've nearly no knowledge regarding the original webcomics. I for one am EXTREMELY excited to see where the story goes next and am going to have to stop myself from looking at the original comic so I don't spoil anything.
    (Also I genuinly have such a huge love for the Prohibition 20's era and 40 and 50s noir style they went for, I've always loved things like the old architecture and jazzy music style)

    • @videogamer596
      @videogamer596 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From everything I can tell as a reader of the webcomic, the pilot takes place sometime after the last part of the comic (which didn't have an ending so much as a pausing mid-sentence).
      So unless you care about spoiling like potential characters that show up or worldbuilding, you'll be fine to read it and not have story beats spoiled, etc...
      My rationale: the clothes Ivy wears in the short are only seen near the end of the comic, and (warning: very minor spoilers:) the coffin wouldn't have been "sunset rose"-filled until after the comic.

      Rocky's "Mississippi" poem is near the start of the comic, but in a completely different context.
      In the comic, Viktor was seriously injured immediately after Freckle first went into the speakeasy, yet he's fine in the pilot.
      Rocky and Freckle don't come into direct conflict with Mordecai at any point in the comic.
      It's _either_ after the comic, after major conflicts have been resolved, and Rocky decides to repeat his poem on the bridge; or an alternate timeline where the events and relationships between characters are significantly different (though the characters themselves were not changed).
      Based on how the characters interact at the speakeasy in the pilot, it looks far more likely that this is an alternate timeline - the same premise, setting, and characters; but a different story.

    I never read this comic but I think the pilot is just a good way to give people a feel of Lackadaisy’s world and cast and the potential it holds for the animation medium
    Especially considering it’s a short film too, they probably wanted to focus on grabbing people’s attention first
    In my perspective if this pilot helps them get the attention and traction they need for a future project of a mini series or something like that to happen, they’d probably go the more classic route of the intro style and whatnot rather than just tossing you into the chaos and then doing “some plot” or whatever you want to call it

      I would strongly second this one - it’s a travesty that it doesn’t also have millions of views by now. In a year where Helluva Boss is in its second season, Lackadaisy premiered, The Last of Us had its first season, and the Super Mario movie dropped, this was somehow both the independent animation and video game adaptation that impressed me most.
      It’s done mostly by one guy in a ‘70s animation / neo-noir sci-fi aesthetic that just oozes style, and the dialogue writing and line delivery are a league above contemporary cartoons not named BoJack Horseman. Unlike the frenetic pace of most modern animation, it gives itself room to breathe and languish, which lends it a weight you don’t often see.
      It’s incredible that it’s all in service to what amounts to a fancy fan fiction. And not to disparage the notion of a passion project for an established property, but it’s kind of a shame that it’s not its own thing, as it probably means that even in this indie animation boom, it’s not going to get the attention it deserves.

    This was a really good video and I agree with a lot of your points. I liked that, even though Rocky's solution was fun and entertaining, the show did still acknowledge how threatening Mordecai, Serafine, and Nico were, and just how lucky the trio was to get out. But I also do agree with you this cast has so much history, and the way it was all introduced did leave a little to be desired as far as hinting to that and the direction of the series. Still great, but if they do get picked up, I agree they may want to be clearer in future episodes. Though, a small correction, the trio is young, but they are all young adults by the start of the story (1927, I believe).

    ayyye! Been with this project since 2020. Been part of the discord since the same year. It is so surreal to see so many people love this thing I have loved for years. ❤❤❤

    I fall in love with Lackadaisy very late as of earlier this year due to the trailer. And I've been hooked ever since! I already read through the comic and reread it ten times or so, I loved the pilot and felt it did a pretty good, decent job of jumping you right into the world & story also giving you a taste of some of the characters. And making you want more of there stories. While not super perfect, I still enjoyed it so much. I deeply hope the Lackacrew will get more good opportunities from this pilot because I want more. 🙏🏾 ❤

    I started to watch this on my lunch break a day or two after it released. After 30 seconds I waited till I got home to finish, didn't want to cheapen the experience with bad glare and sound.
    I've legitimately lost count of how many times I've watched since.

    It’s such a wonderful Piece of Art! I’ve watched the Pilot at launch and over 60 times in the last few days. I’m so glad the Pilot has released and I can’t wait for more! I loved Rocky’s beautiful Poetic Serenade to the Mississippi River was absolutely beautiful. I feel like I relate to Rocky the most, especially with his fluency in Poems and his maniacal side. The Pilot and The Comics have inspired me to return to my own Art and to hone my skills so I can make my own Creations come to life. I really really really hope we get more Lackadaisy in the Future. And it truly deserves to have a series with how truly wonderful it is. I’m so excited for the Future! ❤️😻❤️

    I agree the studios weary of new ideas has made it difficult to support their lackluster content. Sure seeing Futurama come back is somewhat exciting, but we're all starved for new original content which is why independent animation is growing right now. I too didn't know about Lackadaisy until the pilot dropped and now I'm invested and will likely check out the webcomic too.

    The “adult animation genre” or whatever they call it now has like a stigma to it? Thanks to the success of the Simpsons, South Park and then Rick and Morty people seem to think adult animation can *only* be crass and crude comedy. But lore and character development and ongoing story are so much fun! Has so much potential! And can look absolutely gorgeous while doing so. Why else would Gravity falls, Steven Universe, The Owl House, Amphibia, My little Pony and Adventure time be so popular with kids *and* adults?

    • @Stargazer_Ley
      @Stargazer_Ley ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This. Just all of this. Animation for adults invokes a certain vibe but animation is a medium and not a genre and creators (mostly those in big studios) need to stop thinking of it as one. We need to allow animation for adults to be as compelling and thought provoking as live action equivalants. I've seen animation "for kids" be more mature and full of life than animation geared to adults (like the ones you mentioned).

    Honestly, 1920s + anthro furry people is just plain interesting. Well, the 1920s in general are an interesting setting.
    Also the guns :))) are kinda accurately portrayed, so big props on that

    The cusp of this new age: the indie animation renaissance, feels like just the creative poke mainstream animation needs to realize they need to go back to prioritizing the art above all else. In other words, it’s a wake up call. Not to say indie animation can beat the big animation companies/studios. But rather inspire them to get back to their roots as storytellers again. We have indie projects like Hullabaloo, Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel, Villainous (which was picked up by CN years ago), Long Gone Gulch, Monkey Wrench, The Amazing Digital Circus, Murder Drones, and of course, Lackadaisy, that’s pioneering a new trail for animation and storytelling where studios like Disney and Pixar used to.
