Tippe Top - The Spinning Top that flips itself over when it is spun!

- This is a fascinating spinning top with an interesting behaviour.
The 'Tippe Top' inverts itself when spinning at sufficient speed. It does this because its centre of mass does not coincide with the geometrical centre of sphere. This means that when spinning the bulbous top slides over the surface on which it is spinning and this friction and motion causes enough force to 'drive' the spinning top up and over until it is spinning on the stalk. Once on the stalk there are far less sliding forces and the top can now spin stably until it no longer has enough energy to sustain its speed and spin.
This Tippe Top is 29mm in diameter ( 1.14 inches ) and 36mm tall (1.41 inches )

I used to have a top heavy ring that I would spin. I spun it upside down and the thing righted itself with the gem facing up. I impressed so many people with that haha.

When I was about 10 years old, my step dad took me to a open house at his company, Rocketdyne. One of his coworkers was operating a CNC machine and produced tippy tops while you watched. I still have mine and treasure it.
my grandma gave me and my brother wooden ones that were painted red. She and my papa called them "cherry tops" because of how they looked. My brother and I never really learned how to spin them until recently. the cats think they're toys haha
I love videos like this why cant more people do it like this guy??

I love this, I bought both the Tippe Top and Tippe Top XL and I spin them all the time in study breaks. I got an absolutely perfect spin a couple of times where it carried on spinning for around a minute and never actually inverted. I did wonder if a perfect and super fast spin would make this thing spin longer than Euler's Disk at least in Earth's gravity setting.

I had one of these when I was a kid. It was made of plastic, but it had a "magic" component. It had a hole through its axis, with a metal nail though the hole. Before spinning it, if the top was pressed down onto the mushroom (with the stem uppermost), it would push the nail backward so that its head would lift very slightly at the end of the stem, and the top would invert when spun, as yours does. If, however, it was pressed down onto the stem, the nail pushed through just enough to form a tiny bump in the centre of the mushroom (that's "center" for ryelor123, but TH-cam isn't only visible to Americans), after which it could be handed to a friend, who would be unable to make it invert - it would spin on its little point and stay upright.

This can also be done with a ring that has an large stone, if spun on the rock it will turn over and spin right side. Try it yourself.
My brother used to have a plastic one of these. Quite good fun, that.
When I was a kid my cousin gave me one made of plastic, it was spinning and flipping very nicely. I used to take it with me everywhere until I broke it by mistake. I glued it and broke it again.. I loved it alot. Now I bought this one but I can't spin it properly

We used to have these as a child in the 1960s and 70s made from plastic. There was a slight imbalance moulded into an internal spoke under the mushroom head.
You can do the same thing with the plastic two-part easter eggs used to hide candy. Course you have to spin the crap out of them. Always wondered why they would flip over, thanks for the explanation.

I had one of those as a kid
I saw somebody try that principle on ICE and it didn't work. You need some friction between the center of rotation and the surface where it is spinning to cause the stand up motion.

Can get this exact top spinning for over 5mins if it doesn't flip over like it's suppose to, definite neat either way.

You should try it on a friction less surface, like ice!
Whilst it would spin longer with lower friction, the behaviour would still be the same.

I do not know how to translate it into English but they were popular from a long time ago. It originated when poor children would spin acorns and when the toy makers tried to re-create that, they discovered that it moved strangely

Brett Latulip If you could have a threaded center piece and the 'arms' were connected to it in a worn gear fashion so when spun the center shaft moved at a different speed than the body that the arms are on it could 'thread' them inward maybe? No idea how to accomplish this but it might work. I also like to let my mind wonder about these things:)

Rotation direction does not alter this. Still flips up on its point.

That's what is going to happen to the center of the Earth.
You are right that the centre of the earth is not attached to the crust as firmly as we might like to think.
The poles have certainly switched in the past and will do so at some point in the future.

DeansVideoClips It has a round tip to the stalk. so that is in-effect a point as only one small part of that curved end contacts the flat surface at any point.

Interesting... Certainly there is evidence that the internal iron magnetic core and the earths crust seem to shift giving us 'reversed magnetic' poles...

The article seems to infer that because life was not affected by the last reversal then probably the axis wasn't affected but that's just inference. I was also seeing some videos on the Tennis Racket Theorem and it would suggest something similar to Earth has a whole shifting. I was aso curious if any celestial body has been observed having undergone such phenomenon, nature is amazing, and scary!
There is evidence that suggests the pole reversal occurs every few 100k years. Life has been around far longer than that, so whatever it does is not 'extinction' level even at its worsts.
Even Homo sapiens have been around at least 300k (based on latest finds).
