This was not unlike the roles churches performed as the treasury and an aspect of government which was shared with the King's in the UK. The wealth of the churches were liquidated by Henry VIII to fund the transformation of the UK as a modern state. The temple towns with the university towns are today part of the ecosystem that plays important economic roles. The transformative power of the church dominated economy long ago ceased to be important. The considerable wealth locked up in Hindu temples can be better applied for India's economic advancement rather than provide the succour to Christians and Muslims parties who manage to lay their hands on them for their own advancements.
This is satire, right? A temple simply doesn't have the kind of resources a university has. Any donated money in a temple only looks a lot because it's not spent. Once it gets spent, it will be gone within 5 years. A temple can be a place of spiritual healing, a safe space for everyone who needs it. A university is an investment with multiple goals in mind. Lets focus on making indian universities capable on par with their counterparts in USA. How can you compare an American university with a temple when universities in india already exist.
