Glad to see other people are having trouble with nail heads. I'm a blacksmithing student and we just started making nails last week (we use the exact same technique in Finland). We're currently burrowing nail headers from the school but will make our own soon.
Cool man, I intend to do it tomorrow. I watched 1 vid and they punched the hole with the taper other direction. Flip the header over & try that... I dunno, just a thought, great stuff man.
Nice. I am going to make a nail header so I am watching everyone's ideas to see what technique I like best. I like integral handles like yours. Great job... Take care...
I appreciate the video here my friend. I'm getting ready to start forging myself and I figured I'd start out by making nails and then working onto more complicated things. After watching what you've just gone thru then it gives me a good heads up on what to expect myself. Many thanks for an educational video!
I'd start with hooks. you use the same tapering technique and learn the basic use of the anvil horn and all you need is a hammer and maybe pliers depending on the hook. Edit: i just saw you commented a year ago. How is your blacksmithing journey going? :)
thanks for the video, i failed on my 1st 2 i keep pouning it through the hole so i think i need to leave more material and try radiasing it like you said?
Kevin Hansen like ar500 series steels? I’ve never worked with it before personally but I’ve heard that because of its high abrasion resistance it has to be quite tough and not necessarily very hard and when made into blades it doesn’t hold an edge well
When you make the taper can make a shoulder on all four sides at the top of the taper where the head of the nail goes so the shoulders catch on all four sides of the nail header so you get the head on all four sides of the nail
I think you need use bigger stock or make a smaller nail header. The heads keep bending over because you are trying to upset something 3-4x the length of the cross section.

Outstanding sir and thank you for sharing. I am a long way from this but will continue working.
Thank you. I’ve been having a hard time making nails

i always wondered how those were made. thanks!
Nice little tool! Like most things the more you practice the better it will get. Thanks for the video

I got a hold of some AR. Do you have any suggestions on hardening and tempering?

Old Hickory Forge ok that makes sense. Thank you
I'd like to see more about the twister tool. Is that just a pipe wrench & rebar?
Fruition Forge th-cam.com/video/_lpsmSm5iLc/w-d-xo.html my buddy chandler has a good video on how to make these. My small one is based off of his.

As always go video

hvy 1ton that’s my plan. Gonna get some thicker round and forge the tapers more abruptly so I have a wider area to upset without it being so long.
