When one thinks of German tanks of the Second World War, the mind might immediately envision vehicles such as the infamous Tiger, or maybe even the Panther or Panzer IV. However, as many of you may already know, there were many more tanks developed and produced by the Germans during the war. Today we will be taking a look at one of the older production model tanks of the German Army, in the form of the Panzer I.
Thanks to lord captain teapot for writing the script for this video.

As breakthrough tanks they were designed from the outset to engage infantry and deployed artillery forces rather than other tanks.
In their use against partisans they did exactly that, and as you say performed admirably.
It was rather when deployed in operations against enemy armour and heavy anti-tank fortifications that they failed, as expected as they weren't designed for such work.

but what was the huge up armor good for then? only against AT guns? i mean sure the old armor was way too thin but 20mm wouldve been enough id think against infantry. seems just like lots of weight added that doesnt really improve performance a lot

    • @jwenting
      @jwenting 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@Obelion_ 37mm was the standard AT gun at the time, and needed that armour to defeat.
Plus it'd probably also help against rifle grenades and shrapnel from mortar bombs, maybe even anti-tank rifles.
Remember that the original Pz.II was designed around the limitations of the Versaille treaty, and seriously underarmoured as a result.
This ultimate version corrected that, but at the cost of being seriously underpowered (the small size meant no bigger engine could be mounted).

The crews of these things loved them for their resistance to landmines. And they were effective as infantry support vehicles against enemy infantry, especially enemy troops that was dug in and supported by their own light tanks (assigning obsolescent, less capable vehicle designs, past their prime in frontline usefulness, to infantry-heavy formations, was common practice in the Red Army during the war. Waste not, want not.). This is why they were so good at anti-partisan duties. Certainly better in some aspects than the early war vehicles policing units were usually saddled with.
I don't think that this vehicle was "cursed" by any definition of the word. It, like the excellent Luchs, fell victim to adapting priorities to the slowly deteriorating war situation. The Reich needed more fighting vehicles that could combat enemy armor, carry artillery pieces, and defend against attack aircraft (the last especially important in Western Europe). With limited resources, niche AFVs, even useful ones, got the axe. Which is a shame, since the "Baby Tiger" is an interesting and cool little beast.

Thank you so much for producing this long needed video on this, in my humble opinion, unrated, outstanding early breakthrough infantry tank.
This has long been my absolute favorite tank conceived and manufactured during the Second World War.
In hindsight of course, it was dead-end as far as utilizing the Panzer 1 as a viable combat design, but if they had worked on up-gunning the Ausf. F and replaced the two MG34’s with a 2cm auto-cannon (...or twin auto-cannons) if a turret modification(s) were possible given the existing turret ring, it would’ve seen more success.
Nobody can argue the Ausf. F was deadly little beast that, given the fact they produced only 30, performed good service statistically, but was swallowed up by the slaughter that was the Eastern Front Offensive.
Thanks again for making my day for highlighting this tank. You don’t know how many tank publications seem to go out of there way to ignore this tank when talking about the Panzer 1 and the details of it’s development and operational life.

From what I know, the designation "VK" is not Vollketten-Kraftfahrzeug, meaning fully tracked vehicle, but instead "Versuchskonstruktion" meaning Test Construction, or rather Test Vehicle in this regard. So the VK 18.01 designation would be Test Vehicle and the 18.01 is the planned weight of the vehicle, not the weight for the final vehicle. Sometimes there would be an additional letter in parentheses indicating the manufacturer : H=Hentschel, P=Porsche, DB=Daimler-Benz, M=MAN.

    Good afternoon!
I am sorry, but this is probably going to be a list of complaints.
    At 2:08,that's not a Pz I. That's the Verdeja No. 1.
At 4:10, that's a Pz III D,not a Pz III E. Just look at the suspension.
You mentioned at 5:13 that 'VK' is standing for 'Volketten',which means fully tracked, or tracked only(in comparison to 'halbkette', half-track). Although Volketten does mean fully tracked, 'VK' either stand for Volkettenkraftfahrzeug(fully tracked vehicle) or Versuchskraftwagen(experimental vehicle).
At 5:23 "designated as the Pzkpfw I n.A. verstaerkt". Yes, verstaerkt(or Verstärkt,to be exact) means reinforced, but the 'n.A.' is the more important part here. "n.A." stands for 'neuer Art', new build. This vehicle is only a Pz I in designation, and in firepower, although the Pz I used a pair of MG13s instead of the MG34T. If anything,it shares some overall layout features with the VK 30.01(H).(and therefore with the Tiger I as well.) This is where the side hatches are coming from. The overlapping suspension is used to give better weight distribution on the track, therefore better flotation on the ground. Saying it's used to give better ground pressure is... I feel it's oversimplifying. (Maybe better weight distribution would be the right expression.)Also this suspension and running wheels are not saving on any rubber. If you look at the photos on the Belgrade specimen,it's obvious that what is missing from each roadwheel is the Continental rubber rim, while the one in Kubinka still have it.
About the periscopes at 5:49. Those are fixed in position, they are at best going to give you around 180 degrees of vision,if we include their blind zones facing forward.(Unless of course somebody inside starts turning the turret.)
At 6:00 ,the Maybach Hl 45 engine was a gasoline(otherwise known as petrol or 'Benzin') engine, not a Diesel. The Maybach firm didn't produce a single Diesel engine for tank use during the 30s and 40s. And one of the main reasons why the German tanks(excl. Pz 35 and 38(t)) had petrol engines was because that was the Wehrmacht's requirement, therefore Maybach only developed their tank engines for petrol fuel.
For more details, look for Panzer Tracts 01-02. , from page 1-160 to page 1-170.
    A Hungarian Armour Enthusiast
PS: I am looking forward to see the Pz I video.

The Russian designers must've rolled on the ground laughing, since they considered firepower per ton a critical metric in the later stages of the war. Their heavy tanks always were lighter and using bigger guns than their closest German counterparts. The idea of up-armouring a basically tankette to 19 tons without improving its firepower must've appeared truly strange to them... I mean, it was.
