Hugo Borchardt was a brilliant and well-traveled firearms designer. He was born in Germany but emigrated to the United States at a fairly young age, where he became engaged in the gun trade. He spent time working with Winchester, Remington (where he patented improvements on James Paris Lee's box magazine idea), and Sharps (where he designed the M1878 rifle and worked as Superintendent). With this experience under his belt, he returned to Germany and worked with the Loewe/DWM corporation.
Borchardt's seminal invention in Germany was his C93 automatic pistol, which was the first of its kinds using a reasonably powerful cartridge and a locked-breech action. Unlike the other designs extant at the time, the C93 went into commercial production, and 3000 were ultimately made. The gun was safe and reliable, and it set the standard for locating a detachable box magazine in the grip, which remains the standard today. However, its very bulky mainspring assembly led to it being a rather awkward handgun to use (although it was a quite nice carbine when used with its detachable shoulder stock).
Borchardt's talents came hand-in-hand with a fair amount of hubris, and he refused to consider the possibility that his pistol could be improved. Several military trials requested a smaller and handier version of the gun, and when Borchardt refused to make those changes, DWM gave the job to a man named Georg Luger. Luger was very good at taking existing designs and improving them, and he transformed the basic action of the C93 into the Luger automatic pistol, which of course became one of the most iconic handguns ever made.

+dreyrugr Why? IIRC they (or rather Loewe and Borchardt) came to a fair financial agreement, and while Luger is more famous today, in their lifetimes Borchardt was far more wealthy due to his various non-firearms patents. Notably, Luger was broke by 1922 due to being screwed over by DWM in 1919 and died not exactly a pauper but somewhat struggling financially in 1923. Hugo Borchardt passed away the next year, in 1924, much better-off than his onetime protege.

NightlifeSux Worse when you think about it... Rollin White basically got lucky with one patent, and he was in league with S&W making it very difficult for the US govt to get their hands on desperately-needed modern firearms. Luger was a very prolific inventor with huge contributions not only to DWM but also his own country.

4:10 A reason why a mag well in the grip seems so natural comes from neurological practicality: Your hands will always find their way together, whether in the dark or you're otherwise not looking at them at all. If you have a magazine in one hand, you can effectively slot it into your other hand by instinct alone.

The tumor I think you are talking about is the main spring assembly, and yeah, it's one of the pistols biggest shortcomings, because of how excessively large it is. But what can we expect from one of the first self loading pistols? The gun was developed in 1893.
The first self loading pistol was the Schönberger-Laumann, developed in 1892. The Guycot 1879 is also a debatable contender for the title of first self loading pistol, but it loads with a chain assembly, rather than a spring assembly. So these things haven't been around very long, and therefore flaws are to be expected in these old models.

Arthur Morgan Personally, I prefer Billy Midnights Gun, mostly because it’s the earliest possible access to a Mauser C-96 simi-Auto pistol and you can get it right before the Valentine bar fight. Downside is it cannot be upgraded but nevertheless, it’s a nice one too have right off the start if you’re not into revolvers.
That being said however, there’s an awkward glitch in fighting the police in San Denis which causes them to drop the “Simi-Auto- pistol. You just have to be ready to run in and grab it when and/or if it drops.

Reality is closer to the total inverse of your comment, with its implication that the C93 Borchardt used the design of the Luger, because, as the video covered, the C93 was the direct predecessor to the Luger, even to the extent that the Luger likely wouldn't have existed if Borchardt had accepted constructive criticism and made the improvements that various world militaries, especially the Swiss, were asking for him to make to the C93.

Microzombie. Yes and Mauser with the C96, FN (Belgium) with its FN M1900 and Colt with its M1900. That's just mentioning a few that proceeded the Luger P08 and Colt M1911. A small thing too you also don't mention is that Borchardt's design was used as an *influence* and *basis* for their own designs. Without the C93 its highly doubtful the would even have the impetus to develop their own improved designs. Any engineer, designer or inventor worth his or her name revere designs that were an important influence to their own.
IF Borchardt really said that - which I highly doubt as it's coming from somebody who obviously thinks online pissing contests is how designers behave, especially in the late 19th century - then he was correct when his revolutionary new semi-automatic pistol was new. What revolver at that time could compete with it?
If it's anybody that looks stupid it's you with that infantile mindset.
Not a high school pissing contest. Understand?

Watch the damned video and you will know that he said his pistol was perfect and the design couldn't be improved and basically made a massive idiot out of himself because you have Georg Luger patenting his improved toggle lock pistol in 1898, only four years after Borchardt claimed that his pistol's design couldn't be improved upon.
      -
John Browning and Colt came up with their own semi-automatic pistol that actually had NOTHING to do with the C93.
      -
FN's M1900. I highly doubt that a toggle lock with a massive recoil spring in a gigantic tumor above the grip had anything to do with the design of a much smaller and much better gun that happened to use a similar round.
      -
The only thing the C96 Mauser has in common with the C93 was the ammunition being the same size. Even then the Mauser ammunition had much hotter loads.
      -
As for me thinking that late 19th early 20th century gun designers acted like people on the internet. I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.
      -
Ok, what I want you to do now, is look at yourself and ask, "Do I have a sense of humor?" Obviously the joke isn't how it went. You must have very little faith in the intelligence of other human beings if you thought I was being serious. Now that you've made an ass out of yourself, I'd like to congratulate you on the condescension in your comment. Well done. Bravo. Dick.

Neat! I love the history of the development of firearms.
What a beautiful gun, I’ve seen it before... once... either in one of my old man’s gun mags or in a gun documentary. The 90 degree angle between the handle and the barrel makes it look like a very fun, straight gun to shoot. The originator / predecessor of the shape and feel of the legendary Luger/ruger. I had a .22 Ruger for a while, well, my dad did. Nice gun but it jammed a bit too often, the .22’s would tumble inside the loading mechanism too often.
Great video! Thank you so much!

Excellent video Ian. I was always curious about the Borchardt. As an owner of a P-08 Luger, the close relationship between the designs is very obvious. I wish you could have disassembled the gun, but as others have noted, given the five figure value of the gun, especially being such and early serial number and in such good condition for a 120 year old gun, I fully understand your (and Rock Island's) reluctance to screw with it. If you do ever get a chance to disassemble a Borchardt on video, I would love for you to disassemble a P-08 right beside it to show how Georg Luger modified and refined the design. Keep up the great work, I love these old guns. I also really love it when you show a gun's lineage and how the early firearms built on previous designs.

I wrote an article for TFB many summers ago on this pistol. Unfortunately I was not able to take any real measurements or conduct any further inspection of the weapon beyond holding it and operating. The owner informed me it was of .32 caliber which I then found to be incorrect. However, he did tell me that although the magazine could hold 8 rounds to only load 6 or 7 due to some feeding issues caused by an exceptionally stout spring. I was also informed that the stock that originally belonged to the gun doubled as a holster and that the weapon could be used whilst in its holster. I cannot confidently say that this is true either. However it may not be far fetched to imagine that some intrepid tinkerer created his own holster that would function as a stock. Although no records of this exist.
This is a truly fascinating piece of firearms history. I am quite glad that I was able to be exposed to such a pivotal weapon in my early years of firearms study.

    • @ForgottenWeapons
      @ForgottenWeapons  8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

+Weerd2normal2 The stock was actually used as a holster, sort of. The stock itself was a thin flat board, and a leather holster was attached to the side of it, so that it didn't take up any additional space when being carried.

Always thought I should own one of those. The closest I ever came was an old Luger that looked like it came off the showroom floor along with extra mag holster and cleaning kit. Sure wish I had kept it, I did take her out to the range and put her through her paces. I started with some surplus 9mm, the moved on to some ball ammo even put some good hollow points through her, she never burped giggled or farted, just kept on shooting. If I wasn't looking for a carry gun, I think I would have kept it, but this was early in my collecting and at the time I wanted a modern 9mm, so I sent it to a gun show with a dealer I knew, he came back with an old Radom which just pissed me off because I had no idea what the hell that gun even was. Instead of accepting that, he gave me a 1917 Enfield full sporter with fancy inlayed stock that could put three round in a dime at 100 yards, and a model 36 Chief's Special. Guess I made out OK, I ended up trading the Enfield for a set of tires for my Ford LTD, and traded the Chief's Special for a Model 59 Smith that was new in the box at the Red Owl Grocery Store in Pierre South Dakota while I was attending a class at the Police Academy there. Oh to have those days to live over again, knowing then what I know today, but alas those days are gone, gone like my lovely wife of 51 years and 4 days who I recently lost to that evil Bitch Cancer.

Just wanted to say i just recently started watching alot of your videos and really like them/the format, especially your comparison of the svd and the wa2000.
Now this is just some personal opinion, but i really like your history side of the video, live testing and discussion of the guns and the occasional side by side comparisons. Im a little less interested in the technical aspects but can appreciate it, i just wish there was a little more of the other stuff versus the technical breakdowns which tend to take up the majority of the video. Again just my personal taste and regardless love your videos and have learned much from you, keep up the great work!

Ian, I continue to appreciate your effort to get pronunciations right. As for "Loewe", you are saying "low" and you can improve it somewhat by adding another syllable. Try saying "vuh" after "low", but keep the stress on the "low".
At the end of the day, there's just a lot of sounds in other languages that don't exist in English and it's difficult to teach their exact pronunciation with TH-cam comments... I studied linguistics and, if there was any practical way to do it, I would be happy to give you more pronunciation tips that would help you with any language in the world.

No one is really that concerned with him butchering a few words here and there in languages he doesn't speak himself.

BurnThePope0514 I know that. But he cares about it himself. He's always saying he hopes he's not mispronouncing anything, and that's an effort that everyone really should appreciate, because there aren't many people out there trying that hard.

+LJVolkov21 Very few people are actually aware of the significance of correct language. Knowing how to use language correctly will also enable us to think correctly.
