This is beautiful! Thanks for posting this tutorial. I had thought I needed to reroot in afro textured hair, but this is so much more simpler and can be done directly on straight hair, so more convenient. I think this afro style complements Nikki Barbie very well as it brings out her smile more.
OMG I wish I had a doll like this growing up. I have super curly hair and I hated not having a doll that had hair like me. This is such a great idea that I can do with my niece's dolls. Thanks!!
This is wonderful!!!! We need Mattel to start pushing them off the assembly line just like this. My four year old always wants her hair long and hanging down...like Barbie. Now I can show her that Barbie has curly hair like her too. Amazing!!!
I really love this video because mattel fails to make the black barbies or the barbies of color with the right hair texture. LOVE IT!!! I subscribed right away!!!
Omg Toni....I love this. Now Barbie truly can look like us. This is better than the old school Barbie they used to make that had the long curly/wavy hair when u wet it.
OMG Miss Daley you are amazing! I had to look on ebay to find a Barbie with an Afro ( Mattel doesnt make them, shocker) and this lady had Barbies with the most amazing Afros. A friend bought me one but I couldnt find her there anymore. Thanks to you I can do it myself YAY! LOL! Have a great day Miss Daley.
ohh I love this! My daughter has a Barbie who came with hair like this naturally and the curl has gone down over the years. Could I do this with hers to get her curl back?
Thank you so much for your excellent video. I watched one before yours which created ringlets, yet called it an Afro. Now I can have black barbies with authentic looking hair.
Thanks for this. I will try it. Do you have a tutorial on how to properly fluff a afro that is already on the doll? I have a fee barbies that need it. Half of their Afros are flattened because of the package that they came in. Thanks.
@sunsilks I don't mind doing "work" as you put it :) But if it's too much work for you I understand...not everyone likes to put effort into things I guess.
I was able to do this to my Rainbow High doll! (Phaedra - I kept the pigtails in) Thanks so much! I was super skeptical about if the hair might even melt. I had no pipe cleaners so I had to use some (new/clean) wire, and the result was the same, except for how I did poke myself a few times. RH heads are bigger than Barbie's, so I had a lot more curls to make and a lot less room in the bowl - had to dunk each pigtail multiple times to make sure I got it all. I only wish I had snipped off the straight ends BEFORE taking the wires out... And I may need to come back to neaten everything out. I have a lot to learn about this hair type! I really like how this looks already though. Her long straight hair was pretty but I like this way more.
Thank YOU baby!!! I just finished a barbie with dreds, I used chocolate brown wool roving and a single felting needle she came out great, and I can't wait to do the next with a fro!
i have a question, I'm making a custom doll for a movie character and I'm wanting to dye my doll's hair a darker blonde as well as making her hair look like this, should I dye first and then do this tutorial? or should i do this tutorial first and then dye?
just watch this w/my 7yr, she wants to do this to her barbie's. This is a project for us tomorrow. Thanks for the idea, finally my daughter will see herself in her dolls and will appreciate it more, since she did it herself.
Can I do the same with my own hair? :) But I don't understand what this "pipe cleaners" mean and where can I find them? If u could explain it pleaaaase :) It's so great by the way !
+Vitalina69120 Ok part your black barbie doll's hair and then in each part put a little bun, and then secure them with the rubber bands. After that get a cup of hot water from the sink, and let the doll's head sit in their. If you want it to be better, microwave the water to make it hotter then put the head in their. This only works for the black Barbie's hair or others with the same type as hair as her's. On other dolls (like a elsa doll) it just makes it curly so if you want curly hair it works too. An how tight the buns are depend on how loose or tight the curls will be. Tight buns=Tight curls and Loose buns=Loose curls. Another thing, if you want it to stay just for a short time don't use water(You would have to wait a whole day) With hot water it would stay longer( You would need to have it in there for a hour) Also how long you keep them in depends on how long they stay. After you take the buns out, if you have an afro pick that would work really good but if you have a regular comb thats ok. Yeah so you just comb it out into an afro and have fun with your Afro barbie ;) Have any questions just ask.
I used to have a barbie with a curly afro as a kid. I didn't appreciate her at the time because I couldn't comb her hair. This 'fro is much cuter. Great idea!
thank you!! i made a doll for my friend that looks like her, but was worried about the doll's straight hair vs her super pretty curly hair. Thank god i found this!!! i bet she's gonna LOVE the doll i made for her!!
@windycitynatural - What?!? Play witdat if you want to . . . I was just contemplating that very thing. I'm just crazy enough to try it (as you said, w/o the hot water of course).
Great tutorial! I've been creating One of a Kind Dolls since 2006, and done close to 2000 reroots, and over 2000 wigs, and somehow I've never done an afro! Makes me want to do an afro this weekend. Now which doll is going to be my victim? Mwahahaha! I love doing doll hair! Somebody's getting a 'fro before the weekend is out!
yaass black barbie! come thru & slay! our girls needs more dolls with ethnic hair
Uyei Julani thats true

Wow! That's an amazing tutorial! Thanks!
Pipe cleaners are thin colourful wire covered in felt that are used for crafts. They can be found at any department store.

You're so creative Toni...that was so cool. I like your hair at the end of the video too.
I think this was an amazing tutorial and helps a lot of moms and doll collectors out there change there dolls to a more natural look. Very cute.
ohh I love this! My daughter has a Barbie who came with hair like this naturally and the curl has gone down over the years. Could I do this with hers to get her curl back?
I think it would work. :)

How do you come up with this stuff?? She's beautiful!!
Thank you so much for your excellent video. I watched one before yours which created ringlets, yet called it an Afro. Now I can have black barbies with authentic looking hair.

@155linden Thanks hun! I appreciate that :)
Thanks for this. I will try it. Do you have a tutorial on how to properly fluff a afro that is already on the doll? I have a fee barbies that need it. Half of their Afros are flattened because of the package that they came in. Thanks.

@kasb40 That's what I like to hear :) Have fun!!

Can the hair return to the original style if I dampen it?
I can't wait to try this, what I was doing was not working. Thank you so much your Doll looks BEAUTIFUL!
Fantastic - finally Nikki/Artsy doll has a hairstyle that suits her. Will definitely be trying this.
You can straighten it by dipping it in boiling water again
That's awesome! You should definitely try it!!
That is GORGEOUS! And I dig how she looks with the pipe cleaners too! :P :D
I am so exciting to give some of my dolls afros tonight!!!! lol
can u use something diffrent for pipe cleaners
Straws and use rubber bands to close them together. or use knitting wool to wrap hair
+Vitalina69120 Ok part your black barbie doll's hair and then in each part put a little bun, and then secure them with the rubber bands. super late to still be doing comments but i love the hair! 😂👌😍
donde puedo encontrar ese pelo en aca en España
i am going to try this with yarn ive brushed out on a stick so I can glue it to a wig. i hope it looks as good as rooted hair 😬
Are the curls permanent or should i redo it again after a while? Thank you so much for this!
you could put hairspray to keep the curls but it might be smelly :P
You are heat setting the plastic hair fibers with the hot water, so the style should stay until the hair is heated up that hot again.
Excellent tutorial and so simple, this was fun to do to my doll!
does it work on other dolls
I used to have a barbie with a curly afro as a kid. I didn't appreciate her at the time because I couldn't comb her hair. This 'fro is much cuter. Great idea!
That is a super cute idea Toni!!! I like the barb much better with the afro :)
Great idea! :)
Can i use something else besides pipe cleaner
@afrikahchick Thanks, I don't have children, but yes...she is a very cute little girl :)
Wow I am really delayed this was 4 years ago but still this is awsome!
thank you!! i made a doll for my friend that looks like her, but was worried about the doll's straight hair vs her super pretty curly hair. Thank god i found this!!! i bet she's gonna LOVE the doll i made for her!!
don't know how I got here from Q&A videos but this is gorgeous!
This is beautiful, love it, thanks for sharing
Cute idea, and little mamma kinda looks like Taren's daughter...such a resemblence!
Can u blow dry it to get it dry faster
I finally tried that on my doll and it came out really nice. thank you for a great video!

This is sooo cool!! I used to have a Barbie salon when I was a kid with my sister lol, I would have loved to do this!!
can you get it back to normal?
@windycitynatural - What?!? Play witdat if you want to . . . I was just contemplating that very thing. I'm just crazy enough to try it (as you said, w/o the hot water of course).
I wonder if I can do this with my bratz doll's

+Dominique Thomas you can do eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
I love this❤️. Can’t wait to glam my doll. Thank you 😊
You do think of the most creative things; in some places, it is hard to find a Black Barbie.
Kudos :)
