I bought a DCF845 to replace an older DCF887 and it is a little smoother feeling. I sorta wish I went with the DCF850 due to the depth allowing it to fit in tighter spaces.
So not just me who feels like the 845 is smoother somehow...neat. Can always get an 850 too lol although out of the two, I'd take the 845 over the 850.
@@SomeGuysGarage oh yeah, I hate switching tips so I got two, still have my 887 for grimier work, the two 850s I use for my woodworking/cabinet building
Thanks, yup, those 887's are workhorses :) I have two of them, one of which was my first 20v Dewalt tool (along with a 996 drill when I replaced my 18v stuff) and although a little beat up looking, it's still going strong.
I have the DCF801 and I recently got a 12V5A battery which increased the performance of the tool quite significantly. It could be good to test it your way and see the differences.
No doubt it would help, just like a 5ah out performs a 2ah on the 20v line. Thing is, the 12v line for me is small and light duty use, so having a larger battery defeats that purpose. Of course if see one on sale for a good price, I might be tempted ;)
@@SomeGuysGarageAgree with the portability. The capacity is just one factor, the weight is important, but the max current is more beneficial for drills and impact drivers. I use my 5Ah with my reciprocating saw, works almost 3x longer than a 3Ah which gets overheated very quickly. If you have a chance, please test the 5Ah. Regards.
I appreciate that you weight the drivers without the batteries. Other videos I've seen weight with different battery packs, and that is not a fair comparison.
I have the 887 and the 850. Bought the 850 because of the smaller head for tight places. I considered the 840/845, but speed wasn't as much of a factor for my use.
I just got an 845. Someone stole my 887. I dropped my 887 from 8 feet a couple times on concrete with out a crack or bad blemish. I hope the 845 is as robust but definitely like it so far.
The 887 gets extra points because it's 10 years old. Not quite a fair comparison if it's that old, but also a strong endorsement that it's still working well.
For sure, the 887 even ignoring its age is still a great impact driver...I've been using them so long that I have better trigger control with it, so I often grab it before the new ones. It definitely gets the extra points in my book too :)
The 887, even being the old model, is still a great impact...I find I use it more than the newer models just because I've got a feel for the torque/impacting/trigger.
Yup, 845 is the fastest right now...and really that is what usually matters with impact drivers more so than outright torque. As for measuring torque, I don't have a test rig for that but our friends at Torque Test Channel have done some great testing there :)
Well, this video still didn't help me decide. LOL. My old 887 light stopped working, trigger catches, sometimes hard to shift forward and reverse. Been trying to decide on 850 for compactness, or 845 since in the buy one, get one offers. First video that showed how chubby the 850 is though. Great content!
@@movaughn20 yeah, TTC did just check that one out a week or two ago and did have some broken bits. This is far more likely when using socket adapters on an impact driver, when used with screws you're more likely to break the screw. I reocmmend not using an impact driver with a socket adapter anyway, just get an impact wrench (who doesn't want more tools?) I guess if you are trying to decide 845 or 850, just pick up whichever is cheaper?
great comparison. ive been debating between the 845 and the 850 for a bit. dont really want to blow the money and be disappointed. Excellent timing on the video. looking forward to your review of the dcd800 thats the other one i have my eye on
Glad it was helpful! I should have something up with the DCD800 in it compared to a bunch of other things this coming weekend I hope :) already filmed, just have to edit.
Minor performance improvements with the bigger battery. I used a 1.7ah powerstack because it's about the same as a 5ah in performance. I mostly use these impacts with the 2ah though day to day, nice balance of weight, power, and runtime.
The dcf801 with a 2ah battery against three impact drivers of 20V with 5ah batteries wasn't a good idea. You should use the 5ah battery for the 12v or 2ah batteries on the 20 volt. Maybe next time! Anyway, good video.
It's what I had, most DCF801 kits come with the little 2ah....so just acts as a reference point for those considering it. It was never supposed to be fair to put a 12v in with the 20v :)
@@SomeGuysGarage Exactly my point! For reference, I would have liked to see the performance of the 12v with the same size battery. It would have been technically more beneficial! We all know they are different voltages! But anyway, thanks for the video.
Someone else mentioned that, I've been keeping an eye on prices of the 5ah 12v packs. Thing is though, having all the bigger ones, I don't have much need for the bigger packs, if I need more beans I just go to 20v.
@@SomeGuysGarage I hear that. I personally own the 18v 845 too... for those extra beans. I'm personally hoping that they bring a power stack 12v battery into the market. Probably won't happen but a man can dream.
The 845 is likely in a kit with a battery or two (there should be something like d2 at the end saying 2 of a certain size battery) The 845b is just the bare tool with no batteries or accessories (bag, charger, etc.) Otherwise, they are identical from a tool perspective.
I don't think it actually is. It's a lowes exclusive vs home depot. No (xr) markings but if you compare the body to the 845, nearly identical. Biggest difference is trigger throttle control, no select speeds. But I'm telling you it's wrecked the 850 and 845 in some tests.
@@salemsouthyou can buy them on amazon and such too...I was just checking prices and the 840 is less than $10 cheaper than the 845, and specs say it's lower power. You've got me curious though, so if I can snag one for a good price I'll test it out.
I'm telling you now, you'll be shocked. I watched another channel about a year ago, that's what piqued my interest in it over the 850. Then the 845 came out, but marginal difference in tests, made the 840 seem like the one to choose. Some good deals with a battery and charger. Now in saying that. I'd be curious to see if the 845 is tuned for more battery, like higher performance with a 6ah etc.
