Opening The Coffin Of Mary I - Bloody Mary

  • One of the most shocking and notorious Queens ever to have ruled over England was the eldest daughter of Henry VIII, who was known as Bloody Mary. She was the Queen who burned over 200 people at the stake for their differing religious beliefs, and Mary’s short but brief reign was one which was very turbulent. She would reverse the huge religious changes her brother Edward VI and father made, and this led people to be rather confused and they did not know where they stood. But Mary’s reign was not long and many believed she would never be a ruling Queen. However Mary suffered with a lot of severe health problems in her life and these eventually contributed to her death. Mary I died at the age of 42 inside of St James Palace, and Mary was then buried inside of a burial vault in Westminster Abbey close to where her grandparents Henry VII and Elizabeth of York were buried. But the burial vault of Mary I was disturbed a number of times and shockingly when it was last opened what those people found was shocking!

She’s called Bloody Mary, but her father Henry Vlll and his mental abuse pretty much drove her insane. She was owned then disowned, she wasn’t allowed to go to mass, her father tried to force her to become a Protestant, she wasn’t allowed to see her beloved mother Queen Catherine , after her father divorced her mother he had her declared a bastard, then she was his child again, she saw how if someone didn’t agree with her father he would have them executed, I think every time she had a Protestant burned at the stake, she felt she was killing her father and Anne Boleyn. She was a victim of her own father.

I wish the English would show their 1st queen more respect. The 1st thing to remember about monarchs then was that they were all horrible. Everyone forgets about the 6 years Edward VI (or more like his advisors) had on the throne, and what a tyrant, just like his father, he was turning out to be. People rejoiced when Mary took the throne. Why? Because it meant an end to the fundamentalist Puritanical reform of her brother. You know: the no images, no holidays, plain dress only, Christmas-cancelling kind of reform (and they had no idea who Lady Jane Grey was, let alone why she was being called queen). Mary's return meant people could have their religious rituals, holidays, and traditions of merriment back, instead of nothing but austere work, work, work, and prayer.
At that time, England never thought a woman could rule in her own right. They thought the entire nation would fall. Much of what Elizabeth did and did not do was because of Mary's example. Some of her more popular speeches were actually ones said by Mary before (i.e. no wish to see inside men's souls). Mary taught Elizabeth how to rule. Yes, burning people for heresy is a bad thing. But so is hang, drawing and quartering them for heresy (oh, sorry, we just call it "treason" now), which is exactly what Elizabeth did to Catholics. It's very hard to say which death is worse. Their father Henry VIII had nearly 60,000 people killed. So why pick on just Mary here? The Italians and other Catholic countries view her differently.
Mary inherited a deteriorating country, from the wanton spending of her father. Her brother had started the process of digging England out of massive debts, which Mary continued. The mistake she made that affected her popularity was marrying King Philip of inquisition-crazed Spain. But even there, due to the all-encompassing misogyny then, she had little choice but to marry someone of her own rank - a king. If they had had a child who would have been heir to England and Spain, that would be empire building, so at the time, marrying Philip looked like the smart thing to do. It's because of the lessons of what happened and how she was viewed when a queen in her own right married, that Elizabeth chose not to do so. Would anyone have asked a male monarch that to be taken seriously, you cannot marry or have children? Absolutely not.
Mary I wanted to be buried with her mother, Catherine of Aragon, in Peterborough Cathedral. She had a very sad life, with not only her severe health problems, but constant threats hanging over her in her father's and brother's reigns.
I do thank you for not making Mary out to be "hysterical" with "phantom pregnancies" (We know now phantom pregnancies are cysts in the reproductive tract or perhaps intestines.). She was a very strong person, and she showed exceptional (for the time) mercies to those who actually plotted to kill her. In another time and place, Mary would not have had killed Protestants for heresy and might have been a ruler we admire very much.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

'Henry VIII killed 60,000 people so why just pick on Mary here?'...probably because this video is about Mary, not Henry VIII.
Henry is not thought of as a great king here in England, he is critisised just as much as Mary is for the things he did. So please don't try to imply that us English only "pick on" Mary

Henry VIII is said to have executed around 70,000 people during his reign. Elizabeth I had dozens of people executed because of their faith.....mostly catholic priests who were ministering to the catholic population. catholics were required by law to attend Anglican (protestant) Services or pay fines. This was OK for the aristocracy who could afford it. Many were executed for hiding priests in their homes or for allowing them to use their homes to say mass. (St) Margaret Clitherow a housewife in York was sentenced to death and crushed to death under her own front door....just one example, she may have even been pregnant at the time.

Mary is misunderstood. She was a deeply pious troubled woman who clearly suffered from mental health issues in her later years caused by her earlier life and physical declining health. A little known fact is that she was so short sighted she could barely see more than a few feet around her which probably contributed to her lifelong nervous paranoia through feeling vulnerable.
She gave alms to the poor, would intercede in local matters (ie. support bereaved families or employ/educate young people) and would spend holy days washing the feet and handing out alms in churches. Pray for her soul.

Is this video accurate? It is my understanding that it was the decision of Elizabeth the first to have herself buried with her sister, Mary the first, and that it was Elizabeth who commissioned her own tomb, so that would mean that James the first would not have been involved in any exhumation or burial of either queen.

I think you have a very biased opinion of Mary. If you really look at the history which you do in quotes, you'll see that the victors write. The history Elizabeth was just as bloody. If not bloody or so for you to sit there and be condescending about Mary and what she did at the time. I think is very disingenuous

It was that shocking! However, she lived in a time where mortality was high and life was cheap. She watched her father dispatch two wives as well as their friends. It seemed to be an occupational hazard for courtiers, etc. Remember, how many priests he killed and monasteries he sacked.? No wonder Mary was hardened to it. She was also an ardent Catholic as was her mother before her, and was probably very aware of why Henry turned the religion of this island upside down. not for any religious belief but for pure lust and greed. Much lower down the status scale, you could be hanged for quite minor offences. As I said, life was cheap.

@@kelrogers8480What about all the other monarchs who executed thousands?? Elizabeth I was extremely successful in her rule but a lot of it was from what Mary had done before her. Painting people as good or bad usually isn’t accurate. People are complicated and history is nuanced. Mary did a lot of good things and she did bad things- just like every other monarch. Most people’s opinion on monarchs, especially during the lives of the Tudors, are still based on the propaganda from back then. It’s really crazy when you think about it.
