@Keith Smith: I'm not sure that they were better than Ella in communicating that joy you spoke of, but they were definitely up there. And this song certainly conveys that joy! I like singing along with MT; usually I pick one of the women's lines to sing. What I love about this song, is that I feel the liberty to ad lib and can play around and it always works.
This song is their best. Mystery, Spice of Life, and Ray's Rockhouse come in a close second for me. I've never seen a group that can make every genre their own. The Manhattan Transfer do. Tim, you are missed.
Also thanks to the great Brazilian artist Djavan, who helped them and authorized them to make this song, that is actually a cover of Djavan's "Sina" (published in 1982)
Love their voices. I was in the Navy and my roomie was playing Ozzy so loud in his Walkman I could hear it and couldn't sleep. I found jazz music would drown him out and still let me sleep. That's how I found the Transfer, Spyro Gyra, Joe McBride, etc.
I loved this group from when i was merely 9 now at 48 im still loving them and this is my favorite song and Spice of Life....NOW THIS IS WHAT I CAN MUSIC!!!!!!!
Sounds so much like the CD, no ? Where are the musiciens ? Isn't it play-back ? Before answering listen to the cd and compare. I love this song don't get me wrong.
Wow this is an incredible group. Disappointing to see them Lip-synching their own music. I can't believe they agreed to do that.I saw these guys live in a double bill concert with Take 6.These guys are absolutely the real deal.they must've got a lot of heat from the record label or some one to make them do this kind of a performance. Oh well I'm still a big fan.
It's common for singers to lip synch to their own music. Purists may object but there could be a good reason why the synch was preferred. As long as they sang the original I've got no problem. This isn't a Milli Vanilli situation
Sì, è vero, ma i Sanremo di quegli anni, così come il panorama musicale, aveva un non so che di... magico, che il playback quasi va in secondo piano. Era tutto perfetto musicalmente: talento, varietà musicale, estetica, presenza scenica, testi, tutto. Quanto sarebbe bello ritornare a quegli anni. 😪
Jan & Cheryl lookin good !!!
I don't think anyone ever communicated the sheer joy of singing better than the Manhattan Transfer.

Goodbye Tim Hauser. I'm glad I got to see you and the rest of the Manhattan Transfer live.
The song is by Djavan, composer and singer brasilian genius

Such an underrated group it's ridiculous!!!
R.I.P. Tim Hauser. Thank you for creating The Manhattan Transfer. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!
Part of the sound track of my life!
This song is Djavan's "Sina", 1982.
Djavan collaborated in this version and authorized it!
Great song. Beautifully sung. 'This Independence' still my personal favourite though, but every song is superb.

Latrice, pat yourself on the back for having such good taste as a 9 year old, and for continuing that good taste as an adult.

just the best - like Keith Smith"s comment - so true - masters of harmonising
I saw this live in Chicago. It was spellbinding.
this song for me is spring 1988
Excellent😊👏💖
I used to get up in the morning with this song for a certain period.
A class act. Thanks for uploading this.

God wanted ElDorado Caddy up in heaven! RIP, Tim Hauser. ------------------Wolfsky9
Hmmm - perhaps. But both ElDorado Caddy (your LA Daddy - heh, heh, heh) & Tim Hauser are missed.
Lip sync! So hard to find a legitimate live version of them doing this.
+Blind Labyrinth I watched MT perform this 4 times, in person. It was always awesome, just as you hear on this video. ----Wolfsky9
This is not lip sync. This is their live sound.

Singing over their own track.

Yeah, Alan Paul lip-synching to Djavan's additional vocal on this is a dead giveaway.
Yeah but it’s Manhattan Transfer, a vocal group. Very disappointing.
Sembrano i UB 40
I first heard this beaut on jazz fm in the UK. Sadly the station is bland playing the same old shite.
Era tutto perfetto musicalmente: talento, varietà musicale, estetica, presenza scenica, testi, tutto. Quanto sarebbe bello ritornare a quegli anni. 😪
