Forty five years ago my German Shepherd Duchess passed away. She was given to us when I was a 4th grader. She lived until I was a junior in college. I was the youngest of 5 with significant age gap from my siblings. I never felt alone as Duchess kept me company. I’m glad Kaya was able to support her owner. It’s wonderful veterans are able to receive comfort dogs!!
I’m feeling those last statements about Kaya: “ I didn’t want her to feel pain and suffering after all the pain and suffering she stopped. “ “ Waking up the first morning without her…. Was the hardest thing ever… 😢” As a grateful daughter, granddaughter, and every generation back to the civil war: thank you to my family and everyone who has served. ❤ As a Service Dog handler this has me extremely proud and choking up with tears, gratitude, and not wanting our time to ever end….. I’m not taking a single moment we still have each other for granted.❤ As a grateful mom to my current Black Labrador Service Dog Task trained in PTSD and Medical alert: Thank you my sweet, goofy, phenomenal, partners for life, stunningly beautiful, & MY baby girl forever! Looking forward to the time we still have together and love working together everywhere. You are my lifeline. ❤
I know how he feels. I lost my dog a few years back, and your heart is shattered. They are a part of your family, and dogs give unconditional love. When you're down, they will look you in the eyes and can see your pain. They will lick your tears to make you feel better. It's going to be hard getting thru the loss, but stay strong. It's never easy losing an animal who has helped you thru so much.
Kaya was the perfect companion, she knows you did your best to make her last days the best. I know its hard to let her go. Everyone who's made the same choice knows your sorrow.
My deepest condolences for your loss. Kaya was clearly a special dog and would not want her death to halt the progress you're making with your mental health. Thank you for your service to your country.

Amazing dog, and a great story! My GSD died from cancer a couple of years ago. It is an extremely difficult choice to end their suffering (the selfish part of us wants to keep them around). Thank you both for your service!
They love us without reservation and all we can do in return is give them all our love and the best forever homes they deserve.

Amazing how dogs stay with us, even long after they're gone. Forty five years and she's still with you. Brings tears to my eyes.
