The XFL 1.0 looked great on its opening night too. But fan interest dropped by the week as the diluted talent pool became more and more evident. I miss the XFL's purposely trashy cheerleaders, though. That was one thing it got right.

But then that fell through and the Alamodome has just been sitting there with no professional football until last night. The people of San Antonio have been waiting a very long time. I wasn't surprised at all to see the large turnout.

I’m from Texas and San Antonio is the closest to my city, 5hrs away, I saw this game live and was impressed tbh, the quality was great for a start up league, and it can only get better, I enjoyed the presentation as well, glad there’s more football, a lot of retired nfl players were tweeting about the game too so it impressed a bunch of ppl, I’m rooting for San Antonio till a team closer if ever comes up, I’m all for this league
"It can only get better" - actually it can get worse if they keep letting the QB get hit like that. You're starting with 4th string talent and could soon be down to 5th and 6th string talent, guys who couldn't even get signed to an NFL summer camp. Remember that XFL 1.0 started off the same way, great ratings and lots of excitement, but the injuries piled up with all the big hits and the thin talent pool got exposed. By the end of the first season hardly anybody was still watching and the XFL folded.

It's hard to imagine there can be enough NFL castoffs for one spring football league let alone two. It takes more than a fancy marketing plan to create player talent. And no league is "competing" with the NFL unless it takes players the NFL wants. Basically the alternative leagues are giving the NFL a much longer preseason. If you're not a fan of the NFL preseason, you're not going to stay a fan of these alternative leagues that use the same level of talent.

It's meant to compliment the nfl, not compete with it. It's actually a great league so far! Not high scoring, but there were tons of big plays and the refs let the players play. I'm liking this! The AAF should serve as the 2nd division to the NFL. Best overall team moves up to the NFL while the worst in the NFL move down. This will hopefully prevent teams from tanking on purpose.
That's a good idea although parachute payments would have to be satisfactory to make up for the potential loss in revenue with being relegated to a lower tier. oYu could also promotion playoffs for the final 1 or 2 promotion places to reach the NFL hypothetically.

If the AAF develops, increases its fanbase and $ offered to players and coaches, they'll attract better talent and it'll truly be worth watching. Then, if the XFL can do that with northern cities, they could merge, have 16-20 teams and really be something special. I don't think it can ever fully compete with the NFL, but competition would force the NFL to improve. It could also operate as an NFL development league, and all those guys who get cut or never get a chance in the NFL could possibly get a shot here.
@Cameron Luer it wasn't formed by the NFL per se but there is heavy NFL involvement (Contracts have auto outs to the NFL, league is basically the NFL FA class, etc.)
The AAF is not going to attract any talent that could play in the NFL. That puts the ceiling on the "better talent." Talent doesn't magically materialize just become some billionaires throw money into an alternative league. Talent is a scarce and largely fixed resource. This is especially true at the quarterback position, where there is never enough elite talent for all 32 NFL teams, let alone for two new leagues. The AAF cannot magically create more of that talent, unless maybe they set up a selective breeding program. The way the Chinese created Yao Ming, by telling its top male and female basketball players to get busy.

With the XFL coming back (again) next year, I still think acquiring some of the AAF teams that were in cities without NFL teams would help keep it alive. This game made it obvious there was demand for football in san antonio.

I’m from Texas and San Antonio is the closest to my city, 5hrs away, I saw this game live and was impressed tbh, the quality was great for a start up league, and it can only get better, I enjoyed the presentation as well, glad there’s more football, a lot of retired nfl players were tweeting about the game too so it impressed a bunch of ppl, I’m rooting for San Antonio till a team closer if ever comes up, I’m all for this league
"It can only get better" - actually it can get worse if they keep letting the QB get hit like that. You're starting with 4th string talent and could soon be down to 5th and 6th string talent, guys who couldn't even get signed to an NFL summer camp. Remember that XFL 1.0 started off the same way, great ratings and lots of excitement, but the injuries piled up with all the big hits and the thin talent pool got exposed. By the end of the first season hardly anybody was still watching and the XFL folded.

Nfl fan thank you 🙏🏽 and to be honest, those hits were the same hits all the Legends took growing up, look man the NFL has programmed you to think that’s not football, but we all know what the game is and they know what they signed up for, injuries happen can’t be scared, I saw the QB come back and that shows heart and character, i have the schedule saved and plan on watching the whole year, hopefully the league starts something and can be around for years to come, it has that feel of home, like ur there cuz u want to be and that makes it feel cool, hope y’all stay blessed and go commanders!

It's hard to imagine there can be enough NFL castoffs for one spring football league let alone two. It takes more than a fancy marketing plan to create player talent. And no league is "competing" with the NFL unless it takes players the NFL wants. Basically the alternative leagues are giving the NFL a much longer preseason. If you're not a fan of the NFL preseason, you're not going to stay a fan of these alternative leagues that use the same level of talent.

It's meant to compliment the nfl, not compete with it. It's actually a great league so far! Not high scoring, but there were tons of big plays and the refs let the players play. I'm liking this! I'm pulling for the fleet since Pittsburgh doesnt have a team. Gardner is a big rb. Reminds me of Bettis. Great game!

The AAF should serve as the 2nd division to the NFL. Best overall team moves up to the NFL while the worst in the NFL move down. This will hopefully prevent teams from tanking on purpose.
That's a good idea although parachute payments would have to be satisfactory to make up for the potential loss in revenue with being relegated to a lower tier.
oYu could also promotion playoffs for the final 1 or 2 promotion places to reach the NFL hypothetically.

@Name Here, nah, theyre both cancerous. We need indie devs to take this over so they dont try to milk the fanbase for every dime they have and make it with some passion. Madden and nba2k have been trash for over a decade.
If the AAF develops, increases its fanbase and $ offered to players and coaches, they'll attract better talent and it'll truly be worth watching. Then, if the XFL can do that with northern cities, they could merge, have 16-20 teams and really be something special. I don't think it can ever fully compete with the NFL, but competition would force the NFL to improve. It could also operate as an NFL development league, and all those guys who get cut or never get a chance in the NFL could possibly get a shot here.
@Cameron Luer it wasn't formed by the NFL per se but there is heavy NFL involvement (Contracts have auto outs to the NFL, league is basically the NFL FA class, etc.)
The AAF is not going to attract any talent that could play in the NFL. That puts the ceiling on the "better talent." Talent doesn't magically materialize just become some billionaires throw money into an alternative league. Talent is a scarce and largely fixed resource. This is especially true at the quarterback position, where there is never enough elite talent for all 32 NFL teams, let alone for two new leagues. The AAF cannot magically create more of that talent, unless maybe they set up a selective breeding program. The way the Chinese created Yao Ming, by telling its top male and female basketball players to get busy.

With the XFL coming back (again) next year, I still think acquiring some of the AAF teams that were in cities without NFL teams would help keep it alive. This game made it obvious there was demand for football in san antonio.
