  • If you've watched the channel at all, you're aware I have multiple project vehicles, and because of that I needed to tighten up the budget for the stereo upgrade in the Jeep. It's not really a how-to video, but more of a video to give you an idea of what you can get in the $500 price range.

Good video. I am about to finish my Jeep TJ this year and this was good info.

2006 TJ Unlimited here. I just ordered the speakers you feature in the video. They're discontinued now, so they're only $50-$60 on Amazon. The pods are pricey for what they are, but there's not a lot of options.
For now I'll run those as is, but soon I'll be replacing the head unit, then I'll finish it out with an 8" subwoofer and box that I'll build to replace the factory sub/box under the center console. I've got a Kenwood 5 channel amp I've been sitting on for the last 5 years (have owned for 10 years, but unused for the last 5) that will get a new family in this Jeep.

Should sound nice when it's all done!

For my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn, I installed 4 Kicker speakers, Kicker 300 watt sub & Kenwood amp to power these speakers right. It has a nice punch now! Also, added Quadratec's tweeters that give an added boost to the highs. 🔊👊🕪
Bought a secondhand JVC double din radio, all in right at about 650, worth every penny too!
Fyi, if installing an amp, don't tuck it under near the firewall, there's little to no air, they run warm to very hot there. I relocated it under the driver's seat. Much better now. 👍

Sounds good, glad you're happy with how it sounds! I used to be a big fan of the older Kicker stuff up until a couple years after Best Buy started carrying them. Quality really started going downhill around that time, then even more so when Wal-Mart got ahold of them. The main reason I didn't go with their speakers on this setup though is that they aren't marine rated. Ive always tried to use marine rated stuff in Jeeps since back when I installed professionally. They tend to be exposed to the elements more than other vehicles, so the marine stuff holds up a little better. The only amp you could get away with in the dash area without risking overheating regularly would be one of the small digital "Powerpack" style amps that are designed for that. Or, so.e of the newer digital amps designed for motorcycle applications would work well, and be marine rated as well!

@@NewcomerGarage I haven't had any issues yet and I wheel on the beach a lot. I'm not one of those fools who drives thru the waves ruining the frame and every other thing not salt water proof. These Kickers and everything else was bought several years ago, I had all of them in the garage for about a year, in no real hurry to install. Just bought 1 to 2 pieces at a time since it was a budget build.

@JeepTJWheelin yeah, ot typically takes quite a while for issues to arise. My preference for the Marine equipment is based a lot on doing it professionally for so long and doing everything with the goal of never seeing the customer again until they are ready to upgrade or they bring you another vehicle to work on. (Avoiding "warranty work")

Nice video, man.. what did you do with the bass boost knob? Did you install and mount it under dash?.. or opted not to use it?.. thank you

I didn't want it on the dash. (I think they look tacky) The radio I'm using has subwoofer level control on it if needed.

No such thing as a 500 tj

Never said the TJ was $500. The audio system is $500. Technically, this Jeep was free to me as I inherited it when my aunt passed away...
