When it comes to the strategy against China, today's program reminds me of the 2-track approach again. For it is true that America has approached China by multiple tracks since the 1980s, and South Korea should align itself with it. That would be the "Octopus" track and "Koala", where it may require a sort of swift combination between the two. At least till the Biden administration, South Korea would better walk the Octopus track against China in terms of trade, investments, human rights, and international orders. Octopus track may demand multiple different maps to the target, and redundant resources as well. Plus, Octopus should be ready to cut one of its legs anytime if needed. Making many legs flexible and robust and disposable is not an easy job, but it could be one of the CSFs (critical success factors). In fields of defense, diplomacy, and national security, the Koala strategy might work well. Like Koalas leading a slow lifestyle most of the time, South Korea could move slowly. In reality, the current international ground is fluctuating. Slow movement may save time and mistakes for S. Korea. Yoon's regime is, I believe, expected to make little change from the current standpoint because it looks satisfactory. Some others like technology seem to be in the national security sector and the trade simultaneously. They require to study further.
Basically what these two panels are saying is we are putting our national interests first, not our allies like S.Korea. For China, US will do whatever convenient and beneficial is to US like they did to China and Soviet Union before the old Cold War. it is very rational to US to be in that position simply because they are the top dog with all leverages like nukes and economic sanction tool. But what does SK have to coerce or counterbalance China or N.Korea? only the alliance with US. This is very dangerous and self harming to S Korea deciding their own fate in their own land on their own terms, not US terms. Look, study the history of US foreign policy for a while starting how Korean war started and ended as division of South/North. Korea were divided because US let SU to occupy N.Korea after the end of Japan imperialism and Korea remained in armistice and divided after Korean war because US decided not to punish China and push back them out of Korean peninsular. The same thing will happen to Ukraine. US guaranteed Ukraine their security when they forced Ukraine to give up their nukes. See what happened to Ukraine after that. Trump's US almost treated Ukraine as a trash and before and after the Ukraine War, Biden also continued to refuse sending heavy weaponries like F 16 and long distance missiles. If and when they sent tanks and other weaponries, it was always too late. almost like what US wanted is not to make Ukraine win Russian ASAP but to deliberately make a long war out of Russia by means of sacrificing Ukraine soldiers. You see the pattern? If N.Korea attacks S.K again and China back N.K, there is no guarantee US will want to fight with S.K until we restore the whole Korean peninsular and become one united Korea. The only viable solution for Koreans is to equip themselves with independent nuclear weapons to counterbalance China and N.K on S,Korean terms, not US. Don't forget the real threat is China, not N.Korea. China is behind N,.Korea nuclear bully and and the root cause of all tragedy of Korea remaining divided N.K and S.Korea. The only viable counterbalance with China should be both S.K's independent economic sanction like stopping export of semi conductors to China along with S.K independent nuclear mass retaliation to China in case of 2nd Korean war. You should never trust US in a whole way. As Churchill once said, Americans are as trustworthy as enemy and as treacherous as friends can be to you!
I am always amazed how NPT chicken hawks among our American friends trumpet the same line of boring cliche "Sk nuclear arms will cause a chain effect of nuclear arms spreading among Japan and taiwan and increase the chance of accidental nuclear wars around the world whenever SK got themselves up to voice their own self determination to equip themselves with nuclear weapons as a last resort vis a vis China/N.K. Yet, if you spent some time living in Japan, you would notice how extremely pragmatic Japanese in general are. What they fear most is another nuclear explosion on their soil itself due to the unerasable trauma on their psychic and the idea itself of owning nukes on their soil would faze their mind to a great extent. The event of Sk developing their own nukes and putting into defense assets would not trigger Japan to develop their own. Rather, Japanese would see the obvious benefit of Sk's nukes playing the unprecedented added role of so called unbreakable wall on top of US nuclear umbrella to protect Japan against China/Nk/Russia. Why Japanese want to waste their money developing and stationing nukes on their soil exacerbating their traumatized soul while SK just at the door of Japan island is playing the sort of nuclear wall against China/N.K/Russia? SK nukes would rather reduce any desire, if any, in Japan, of developing their own nukes. For Taiwan, it is irrelevant for a while since this country is not yet recognized even in UN as an independent state and does not have enough national power and even willingness to go nuclear in the midst of US pressure. US needs to have a counterintuitive approach on SK nuclear weapons in the context of counterbalancing China/NK. Think of the possibility of how nuclear armed SK could rather share a big burden with US of counterbalancing China/NK while it would rather prevent nuclear arms from further spreading to other nations.

Yes, it was a very sad experience of being disillusioned with US to know that Hillary and her democrat leaders think divided Korea would be better for American national interests and US should work covertly against the path of SK taking over NK becoming an united free and liberal Korea. Miss Cho, are you a S Korean news reporter here? I understand that much of the viewers of the show is from Korea, but I feel that many questions Cho asks are from Korean's angle. That might confuse the guests...

What they fear most is another nuclear explosion on their soil itself due to the unerasable trauma on their psychic and the idea itself of owning nukes on their soil would faze their mind to a great extent. The event of Sk developing their own nukes and putting into defense assets would not trigger Japan to develop their own. Rather, Japanese would see the obvious benefit of Sk's nukes playing the unprecedented added role of so called unbreakable wall on top of US nuclear umbrella to protect Japan against China/Nk/Russia. Why Japanese want to waste their money developing and stationing nukes on their soil exacerbating their traumatized soul while SK just at the door of Japan island is playing the sort of nuclear wall against China/N.K/Russia? SK nukes would rather reduce any desire, if any, in Japan, of developing their own nukes. For Taiwan, it is irrelevant for a while since this country is not yet recognized even in UN as an independent state and does not have enough national power and even willingness to go nuclear in the midst of US pressure.
US needs to have a counterintuitive approach on SK nuclear weapons in the context of counterbalancing China/NK. Think of the possibility of how nuclear armed SK could rather share a big burden with US of counterbalancing China/NK while it would rather prevent nuclear arms from further spreading to other nations.

Yes, it was a very sad experience of being disillusioned with US to know that Hillary and her democrat leaders think divided Korea would be better for American national interests and US should work covertly against the path of SK taking over NK becoming an united free and liberal Korea. 중국을 압박해봐야 소용없습니다. 한민족은 역사적으로 독종이었습니다. 미국관료들은 한반도와 중국과의 관계를 몰라도 너무나 모릅니다. 한반도는 중국에 종속되는 관계가 아닙니다. 한반도와 중국의 관계가 원만했을때는 중국이 한반도의 독자성을 인정했을때 뿐입니다. 그 독자성을 위협하면 관계가 엉망이 되는 사이인 겁니다. 힘에 굴복하는게 당연하다고 생각하는 미국의 관점에서 봤을때 북한이 중국을 적대시 한다는 것은 상상도 못할 일이겠지만, 같은 한민족으로서는 나는 이해를 합니다. 힘에 굴복을 했다면, 한민족이 5000년동안 살아남았겠습니까?
