It's more than just a lack of training. The type of person they actively recruit to become police officers and eventually detectives is the root of the problem. Most candidates that are highly intelligent are usually disqualified for one thing or another and even one mistake they got caught for when they were young disqualifies them as well. Usually they end up with candidates that lived sheltered lives and have zero experience with criminals or the other side of the law. The majority of Medal of Honor recipients from WWII through Vietnam had a criminal record or were ordered into the military by a judge. None of them would be allowed in today's military.
