Culber tells them Tarka is the wild card, then everyone proceeds to ignore Tarka, even after the torpedoes are fired.

And Nahn should also have repeatedly reminded Burnham that even if she could convince Book that doesn't mean that Tarka wouldn't act on his own.
Cetacean observation: The Rubicon was also a Denube-class runabout shuttle in the DS9 series.
Because all DS9's Runabouts were named after rivers.
The bit that gets me is the planned away mission considering phasers on stun being a last resort after attempting to talk them down. Just stun them the moment you get on board, that's what the stun setting is for! You get to shoot first and negotiate later.

I know this much is true
I am VERY surprised you didn't talk ANY about the conversation in the shuttle between the officers. To me, that was the KEY theme to this episode, finding common ground. It was stated all thru the episode but not a mention from your analysis.
I wish the key theme had been the plot
I feel like arresting Tarka and Book in the last episode would've been problematic. Burnham and Owo not only had no jurisdiction there, but they also had no weapons or gear on them. They would've been depending on Book and Tarka letting themselves be arrested
Yeah, trying to arrest someone when you don't have jurisdiction is a nightmare. I'm surprised people are surprised that they didn't try to do it.

Sean, the other thing about the Celiar in the Destiny novels is that they hide their entire planet (star system? I can't recall) with a massive energy field as well.
I'd say all signs DEFINITELY point to the Celiar becoming Canon.
At least I sure hope so, I loved the Destiny novels.
If this were any other Starfleet captain, Book & Tarka would have been dust. I can’t imagine Sisko, Janeway, Picard, or Kirk having put up with that. Is it that Burnham doesn’t want to kill someone close to her again (a la Georgeau)? I don’t know. It was frustrating as hell to watch.
and nobody disciplined her for it afterwards. Both her and Nahn were laughing and joking at the end. Uhhh....you both utterly failed the mission and started another interstellar war...

@Fury's wild meat farmer Don't worry. Discovery is not remotely smart. If you didn't get it, it's the writers' fault, not yours. I bet you 1000 internets that the 10C is just Picard, living in a time bubble as a Q / synth. Burnham will "save" him, and congratulate herself as she always does.

In the episode, I watched that quite unusual prase from Saru at least twice (it brought a refreshing tone), and here much more times. 😄

Rubicon was great IMHO. How this series handles Omega will be interesting indeed

Ok, I saw the listing on imdb with only 11 episodes, but, I guess, MA got it right. ☺
it's not Omega. it will be Picard, and Burnham will "save" him, while crying.
All doubt about Tarka's motivations were confirmed in this episode. He really wants to get home and the mystery behind this becomes increasingly compelling. Who is it that Tarka wants to reunite with so desperately?
By the way, when did Book know Tarka's intent? I don't remember the moment.

By the way, I thought if the other scientist, his missing friend, would be Aurellio; however, it would be not only a huge coincidence but also they would know about each other much sooner. Perhaps another Dr Soon?
I basically agree with everything you said. It had good parts. But i didnt realize how few episodes are left.

There was too much not blowing Book's Ship up going on in this episode. Way too much. It was a Picard facepalm from me when the device was still blown.
It seems like they're trying to show Burnam learning her lessons from season 1 in this season. Problem is this is a very different situation that likely needs a different solution. And clearly Book was not alone, so her attempts to convince him to change his mind would be futile, thus Commander "You Had One Job" Nhan should've stepped in soon as Owo said shields were down to 20%.
In regards to not seeing Nahns growth, I am actually glad about this too. So much in modern media there is the drive to expand the lore and explain everything but sometimes a little mystery is a good thing.
Was I the only one screaming: 'Disable Books weapons!' at the screen during the episode?
I was yelling at the screen for Book to phaser Tarka after he finished talking with Michael.
Has anyone thought that 10-c might be the Kelvan's from the TOS episode "by any other name"?, after all they're an extra-galactic race with tech far more advanced than the federation's.
I always wondered what happened to that 'Tranya' kid and his lot.
I feel like a war is coming. Like the Dominion War. Also, remember the synth AI octopus from Picard Final... what if it's that?!
On one hand, the writers have more or less said we are supposed to forget Picard Season 1, but on the other hand, that was a big thing to just leave hanging.
Didn't Romulan "Sisters" drop into Book's ship quite easily when Burnham, her Mom and Tilly had it. Did they forget to engage the "anti beam in" shield they talk about in this episode or was it an unspoken upgrade since that occurance?

Firing on Book... Kirk would do it. It'd kill him, but as Edith Keeler is in no position to attest, he would. Picard probably would. Sisko or Janeway? I don't know them all that well.
Should Michael do ti? Probably, but I understand why she couldn't. I wouldn't be able, in her place. Than again, I'd never make it as a captain in starfleet. Take what you will from that.
President Nereena (sp?) is not a good vulcan, by 23rd century standards. Too much minding feelings and intuitions. I approve. Cultures need to evolve.

My biggest down is realizing that EVERY officer on the Discovery's bridge (other than Burnham and Seru) is a full Commander. Not even a single Lieutenant-Commander. To my memory, even the Galaxy-class Enterprise-D only had two commanders aboard (originally Riker, and later Data).
I thought about tha too but they are 700+ so, no Harry Kim.
The biggest down is minor trivia? Okay then.
Um, actually (Pushes glasses upwards), according to Memory Alpha, Detmer, Owosekun, Bryce, and Rhys are all Lieutenant Commanders.
Lieutenant Commanders are just referred to as Commanders, unless you're formally introducing them.
Only noted that this week too - a huge down

Burnham is right, but I am frustrated that Book didn't drop Tarka after this. But be careful with the word filler because in so short a season this isn't filler.
I could forgive Book and even the salvos being fired at Discovery if after Tarka fired the torpedoes, Book knocked Tarka on his ass. Sadly it didn't happen and went on way too long. So many other ways the 10-C barge could have still ended up destroyed by Tarka automatic programming etc, but the assault on Discovery was unforgivable.
dma is back, discovery never lost shields, and space jesus loves him, so its ok. No harm done. Move along so we can see who species 10c is.
I have the best name for Terena and Saru ship. Beancan- cross beteween our favourite beanpole and a Vulcan.
When Burnham flew the shuttle up to books ship and started to whisper yet again! I could have screamed... but no one can hear you scream in space, can they!

Yeah they don't trust the audience to keep watching the scene so they put the glitches in for when people look up from their phones 😒
@@drian1236 Sadly true. The glitches didn't bother me in the first two seasons when holographic communication was still new. But 800 years after TNG/DS9/VOY they're suddenly back to doing that glitch again.
Well, its at least better than having it freezing up and getting the buffering circle.

I agree with you about the "down" for Nahn not taking over and firing on Book. Not only did they fire on Discovery several times but they almost killed Saru and two officers. Book is dangerous with his emotional reactions. Tarka is even more dangerous because he is unpredictable and arrogant. Nahn should have taken over and blown his ship up. This is a situation where second-guessing is not warranted, the stakes were too high. Blow him up. The same way Book has allowed Tarka to get away with things, so Book has been allowed by Burnham to get away with too much.
Yeah I was hoping Book stunned Tarkas ass this episode , & I loved Book / Burnham chess too

I don't recall it having been mentioned at all unless it's been in passing. They're probably saving that for another season with more extensive Klingon involvement.

yeah the dramatic irony with tarka was pointless and dissolved potential for authentic suspense.
Burnam would have been court marshalled immediately in tng or ds9
They definitely could NOT have arrested Tarka and Book on the barge. Yes, Out heroes definately could have overpowered them, but they wouldnt have just been fighting Tarka and Book, they would have been fighting them, plus all the criminals on the barge who chose to oppose them, AND the barges guards who DO have weapons.

"Wandavision" revealed the plot faster than this! 10c had better be a huge payoff with a mind blowing concept - If they're inconsequential and just say "sorry, we didn't realize" I'm going to be super disappointed.

Didn’t like the end. They went through all that drama, destroyed the DMA and a few minutes later it’s just back.
But it's creepier this way. They're destroying stuff as a way to mine the thing, their dredge is destroyed and they very quickly send another. This isn't a desperate, try-or-die tech for them. It's so disastrous for us and yet it's replaceable throwaway tech for them.

I actually really liked it. It really hammers home the difference in power. If SFDebris reviewed this episode, I'd hope he'd give his "Like Unto an Amoeba" award to the last scene - because it certainly would have earned it.
Agree 100%: Commander Nhan was AWESOME yet the EP 9 plot was not so much so.
Please let this be the last season for Book. His story is so over. Let's move on!

Book already crossed that line in this episode. Burnham crossed the line in her inaction. There are never any consequences for those actions, and this is a recurring problem.
This episode deserves more downs, unfortunately.
I love the apologetic tone EVERYONE has when reaching for ways to compliment this garbage. DUHscovery is the kid that gets the trophy JUST for showing up.
