Love the tip about using lard. That ingredient sure makes a difference in flakey pastry dough. Am definitely going to be trying this recipe. Love your videos and your new home studio!!!
I made these yesterday after finding this vid. I found after rolling out half the dough that it was going to make more donuts than we would eat so I refrigerated the rest hoping it would be ok. This morning I took it out rolled it (a little thicker than you did) and it made the fluffiest softest donuts ever. Keeping you around lol.
I went out and bought a Fry Daddy, just so that I could make these. They were so good!!! Thank you! I look forward to the other recipes that you'll have 🤗 Definitely a keeper 🙌🏼🙌🏼
The whole is so the calories escape... That's what my Granny said, so for me it's beyond question. 😁🍩 When I made sugar cookies and I'm bored cutting shapes, I flatten the dough and use a pizza cutter to make squares, sticks, or odd shapes. Those are the family cookies 😀
Hi Liz! I always look forward to your videos and was really excited about this one! A flavor of donut that I would love to see is a Boston cream donut filled with pastry cream or Bavarian and glazed with chocolate. Those are my all time favorite! I hope you consider making some of those😊
P.S. thank you for always explaining the science and reason behind certain ingredients and methods when it comes to baking.. you are the closest thing I will ever get to going to a pastry school which is a dream of mine, so thank you!🥰
So, cinnamon sugared cake donuts are so nice with apple cider in The Fall. We did that at home as a treat when I was growing up. Your doughnuts look very delicious.
I'm probably blind but I don't see the quantity for the vanilla. 😢 I found it in the linked recipe - whew! LOL. Just an fyi, in case you weren't aware, the vanilla ingredient is the only item not listed in the recipe you posted with the video. For peeps like me who go off the video tutorial, it's an important miss. My first batch, although tasted lovely, was too dense. Darnit. I don't know what I did wrong but round two begins tonight. Cannot wait!!
I must admit, I am really picky about doughnuts. I'm fairly sure that I've never seen a fried "cake" doughnut over here in the UK, the cake ones are usually baked (and therefore are faux doughnuts because they are actually doughnut-shaped cakes) and the fried doughnuts are yeast-dough based. Though saying that, they might use fried "cake" doughnuts for the ones that look like a long finger that is split in the middle and filled with whipped cream and a swirl of jam/coulis on top. They're okay, but for me, the perfect doughnut is a solid yeast-based doughnut, freshly fried, rolled in castor sugar and filled with raspberry jam. Absolutely perfect, especially if it's still a little warm. 😍😍😍
In the states, these donuts and this recipe is a staple. They are anything but “faux”. And always fried to get that outer crisp. It’s how we eat them; especially in the fall with apple cider. We eat yeast donuts too. Filled.
@@Elizabeth-tb5oh Yeah, they definitely aren't fried here (or at least, I've not seen them made that way in my forty-some years). And if they're cake batter that is baked, I stand by my faux doughnut claim. 😁
Ahhh! You have totally motivated me to make some yummy Fall treats. Loved the lesson on lard vs. shortening. I recently discovered the true joy of using lard in British scones. Totally rocked my world. Thanks for the tip on storing oil in the Fry Daddy! Now I'm going to look for one! Love all your vids. Keep up the great work. Almost forgot to congratulate you on your new home and studio!
Absolutely about the hole in center. It allows oil to get into center to also bake the innermost part of the donut that otherwise would remain raw.I wonder if you could bake the donut holes, then pop them back into the donut hole, and glaze the whole thing. Or make a glaze with food coloring, glaze the holes red, and pop them into a while glazed donut. My brain at work, for what it's worth. I love the video, by the way.
When I fry, which isn’t often, I use grapeseed oil. High smoking point, and zero flavour added to whatever you’re frying. And as for the toppings....the 3 you used are literally our favourites!!! Don’t have a deep fryer, but I do have a infrared thermometer!!
Sugar Geek Show I also have a candy thermometer (I’m old, so I gots lotsa gadgets 🤣), but mine doesn’t have a clip for the side of a pot (like Miss Martha has) for stability. So it would be fiddily, and yes, breakable, especially if I’m using my cast iron pot. My hubby saw me watching your video, now he’s bugging me to make some. 🤣🤣 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Hi, my preference is sunflower oil with its neutral flavour. I avoid anything with canola oil as its flavour is unpleasant to me. Just a note, most baked goods in Australian supermarkets have a palm oil component. Thanks for your video.
Genial por tus recetas, y gracias por compartirlos, ojalá podrías poner subtítulos en español, sería más fácil para mí,. Y no estar adivinando lo que dices 😂😂 un abrazo a la distancia, desde Lima Perú
I searched the channel but don't see any other donut videos. I am looking to make blueberry cake, red velvet cake, etc. Do you have any other cake donut recipes? Thanks
Claire Hoyt I want to make a **chocolate** version, do you have adjustments to recipe for adding/substituting ap flour for coco powder? Love this recipe BTW!!

Hi Liz!! First off, congrats on the new house; I hope you will create beautiful memories and a lot more scrumptious recipes (like these🥰 omg I'm up and on my first cup of coffee but jonesing
And vegetable oils arent. Imagine what you have to do to a vegetable to get fat from it. There a reason hydrogenated trans fats turned out to be terrible for humans.
I like chocolate glaze, strawberry flavor pink glaze, or both of these mixed together half and half to imitate the flavor of chocolate covered strawberries. Maybe coat the donuts with strawberry pink color glaze and immediately add rod shaped candy sprinkles before the glaze dries for a "HOMER SIMPSON" donut. The most famous cake donut coating is probably powdered sugar. You can make one that is better than HOSTESS, MRS. BAIRDS, or DOLLY MADISON. Maple glaze is nice. Carefully melted Lind Lindor fine chocolate truffles that have the chocolate cream filling insides make a great chocolate topping by itself, or on a vanilla or other flavor glaze donut. Just be very careful not to burn the chocolate when melting it. Fine chocolates melt easier, and taste better as a donut topping than, for example, Hershey’s chocolate. Maybe add some Ghirardelli caramel topping sauce with the chocolate like what is used as a coffee flavoring. Your traditional donut white glaze topped with broken Oreo cookie pieces would be nice too, maybe add caramel sauce to this also. Let me know if you like these ideas.
@@SugarGeekShow yusss I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for the oven version! I do like donuts, but deep fried food always makes me feel so ill afterwards 😭
Thanks so much my love. Can we have a classic yeast donut recipe? I also wanna know as much as possible about those donuts. I'd love to hear your thoughts and see your experience with yeast donuts.
Okay, I’m a fan of that crispy outside and soft inside and I just wasn’t getting it with the vegetable oil so I went out and got the exact same kind of Lard that you have. My fryer is bigger and I had to put in 4 of those blocks to reach the minimum line but they were cheap and I didn’t care. BUT! Have you ever had Lard smell like fertilizer? Or even cow poop? It’s horrible! And I’m supposed to put my dough in there? 😢well, I’m going to. I’ve come this far. I’ll keep you posted.
I am looking for a cake donut recipe that includes a finely chopped roasted peanut glaze. The chopped peanuts stuck pretty well to the donut sticks. I am imagining dipping the donuts in a glaze, then immediately into a bowl of chopped peanuts, and that they stick well. Anyone heard of such a recipe? Please share if you have ideas. Thanks greatly!! And THUMBS UP to this video!!!

Donuts do not sit on the shelves for years, everything has an expiration date. I am 61 years old, if I ever saw anything past the expiration date, it was at a discount price. I don’t know why u said donuts sit at the stores for years , but since u have a TH-cam channel, take ur camera, go to the store u shop at, and show us a date showing that the donuts r years out of date
I know this was 2 years ago, but it's good to mention. I work in a grocery store (not in the bakery department), but any large chain store has all their donuts come frozen. They sit in huge freezers, stored in boxes, and yes, the donuts could have expiration dates easily 2 years out. The scary thing is they don't even check the dates half the time unless someone circles it on the box. A lot of thing from the bakery come frozen and aren't even made fresh anymore. So yes, frozen donut dough sit in boxes and can be stored in freezers for years.
2020 was the year of banana bread, 2021 should be the year of homemade donuts 😀 I have never made donuts but definitely going to give it a try.

How do make pumpkin donuts
Can you use milk instead of buttermilk for the “wet part” of the ingredients? I don’t have buttermilk so I was just wondering. 😀
To make buttermilk just add 1 tsp of vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of whole milk. Let it sit about ten minutes then use😁
Can you show a baked donut recipe? :)
But where can I find the apple cider and pumpkin variations??😫
Chocolate frosted and sprinkles

Can you make this with regular vitamin D milk?
Every time I make these the dough is closer to batter. I end up having to add way more flour and they come out good but it still seems odd.
