After a similar incident I was told I had innumerable small stones. So waiting to see what the specialist recommends.

Thank you for this information. I am the stage of deciding to remove or not and it's very hard to know what to do so this helps alot. After discovery of multiple stones with largest being 9mm 6 months ago via ultrasound. Following 4 months of dietary changes I would like to get another ultrasound to assess the state of the gall stones. Would there be a recommended time frame for a second ultrasound. Eg 6months, 12 months to see any changes?
    Many thanks

It is indeed rare for gallstones to disappear! The only mechanism is if they pass spontaneously through the bile tube in to the bowel. A second ultrasound is very unlikely to show anything different. Further, even if patients do pass stones spontaneously, the factory (gallbladder) may make more over time.
I have provided some of the statistics around untreated gallstones, symptoms, complications and risk. Good luck!

No one wants a surgery, but shouldn't you be scared of complications too? I'm deciding right now, and given that I had several biliary attacks in the last few weeks, the question for me is - do I have a surgery planned while it is still all within control or do I wait till I get some serious complication, taken to the emergency room with a severe pain and have a surgery then. From my previous experiences dealing with hospitals, I say it's better to plan a surgery. Sort out things at home, prepare everything you want to take with you to feel comfy. Prepare everything you'll need post-surgery too, like food, and scar treatments, and comfy pillows. A planned surgery also means less stress for the doctors' team, so fewer mistakes, fewer risks overall.
