    This is a bloody great video and performance… I love the dark ambient approach to how you play and change the sounds between layers and was great to watch. I’m very tempted to save for one…
    I was starting to save for a Hydrasynth but now I’m torn between them. More research needed.

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have both the Hydrasynth and the modwave, and love them both. Great sonic palette, good effects, and deep programming possibilities. On the modwave you can import your own wavetables and samples, so it’s a little bit more open in that respect. But both sound and feel great. The poly aftertouch keyboard on the Hydra is wonderful to play. I see Korg recently released a MIDI keyboard with the same keybed as the Hydra. Perhaps that’ll end up in their future synths as well.

      Well I think I’ll save for the Hydra Deluxe… I have the Korg Wavestate which in terms of the samples there is a crossover with the modwave and a different manufacturer will no doubt give me a different sound palette to add to my setup… going to take a hike but it’ll be a beautiful flagship.

    Thank you for all the commentary! It fills in gaps I've had about how to build up layers in ambient patches while still maintaining a chord center. How are you sustaining the notes though? Hold isn't on (it has bugs on modwave) and I don't think the amp envelopes are long enough... but maybe that's part of what I'm missing for evolving patches like this? Thanks again!
    EDIT: Oh. I hadn't watched far enough. Cycling envelopes! That makes sense.

    • @patrickr1091
      @patrickr1091 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering the same. But the amp envelope can't be looped, or am I missing something? In the modwave native demo that I have here I can't set the amp env sustain below zero. So I guess he uses the cycling envelopes just to modulate the sound/timbre instead of sustaining the notes....

    • @Waveformer

      The modwave is better suited for these slowly evolving textures as the modwave’s wavetable oscillator allows for smoother and more varied changes in timbre than the Wavestate’s sample based engine. But the Wavestate is incredibly flexible, so you could probably create something with the same feel as this.

      I think it depends on whether you would like to over time learn about advanced sound design, and/or if you would like play advanced patches with lots of modulation.
      If you want a simpler and easier to learn synth, the Minilogue XD or the Arturia MiniFreak could be excellent choices. They are both easy to grasp and you'll learn to use them quickly. It's not that much more difficult to learn the basics of the modwave, starting with an initial blank patch and just turn knobs and see what happens. But being able to use the modwave to its fullest potential requires some more time than more basic synths like the Minilogue XD and the MiniFreak.

    By modulating and morphing waveform, wavetable synthesis is not static anymore. But which number of wavetable synths and even expensive keyboards have that features?
    Really love your music.

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The modulation features in the modwave are fantastic! I don’t know if any other synth that powerful when it comes to modulation. The synth engine itself is somewhat similar to the Hydrasynth, which also has wavetables and different morph types (called Mutators on the Hydrasynth). The keyboard on the Hydrasynth is better, with polyphonic aftertouch. But the time-based modulation sources on the modwave, with Motion Sequencing, is more powerful than the Hydrasynth. I really enjoy doing sound design on the modwave, as you probably can tell by my videos :-).

    Great content! I have an odd question about the MS70 that you might be able to assist with, seeing your setups. Do you have any issues running the split TS+TS to TRS cable from your pedal to the mixer? My pedal works fine with the effects on this way, but when I bypass all effects I get almost no audio through. Trying to figure out if pedal is broken or not, cables and mixer seem to be fine.

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve not had that problem. TS+TS to TRS and into the mixer works just fine, both with and without effects. I’m struggling to come up with a good explanation for your problem. Is the signal in very weak and you always boost the volume in the first effect unit on the MS70? If you connect your synth directly to your mixer, instead of using the MS70, is the audio level OK? If you bypass all effects in the MS70, the output level is approximately equal to the input.

    • @ColonelSandersFinger
      @ColonelSandersFinger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      All three of the new digital trio are very different synths and the Wavestate is a powerful tool but has a completely different synth engine and sound altogether from the Modwave. The truth is you need all three! I went with the Modwave because I have the Wavestation plugin for iOS which scratches that wave sequencing itch. The Modwave is more of a true synth while the Wavestate is more of a powerful sample player. I think your choice could be narrowed down by assessing what you already have and taking note of the type of music you want to create. You'll have to do a bit of research.

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good reply from @TYPE-56. The two synths are different enough that it’s worth having both. That said, you already have a Wavestate, and then you know what to expect from the modwave. The philosophy behind the the two devices is very similar. The modwave is better at nuances and you have much better and fine grained control of the oscillators, whereas the use of samples in the Wavestate makes it more snapshot-based for each step in a wavesequence, if that made sense. I’m very much into sound design and love the modwave for the advanced oscillators and modulation capabilities. In the end it’s about what you love to do, what kind of music you like to create, what other gear you have, etc. The modwave takes some time to learn properly, but in the end it’s worth it, for me at least.

    yo I'm new to synths right so i seen the modwave got excited and bought it right away .. since I've started researching im seeing alot of people saying digital doesn't sound as good as analog. and me being new I can't really make the modwave sound like some of these analog synths I'm seeing on youtube. that sound really musical and smooth. So basically, should i keep the modwave and experiment with sounds to mimic analog sounds or sell and buy analog synth?

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hm. That's not an easy question to answer. Different people have different opinions regarding digital and analog synths, which sounds best, which sounds warmer, etc.
      But since you already have the modwave, I would experiment with making analog sounds and see how you like that. It's often best to play with (and master) the synth you have instead of dreaming of something else. The modwave is extremely flexible and can definitely be made to sound analog.
      Try using only Layer A. Set osc 1 to a saw wave and osc 2 to a square wave one octave below. Do pulse width modulation on the square wave. Add a little bit of noise. Add some random pitch change (on the Program Setup page). Detune Osc 1 and Osc 2 slightly (one a few cents up, the other a few cents down). Use the MS10 LP or Polysix filter with a little bit of resonance. Add a little bit of stereo chorus. A big reverb and some dotted eighth note delay doesn't hurt. Play with the Filter and Amp envelopes. You can also set up a pitch LFO around 5-6 Hz - just a tiny bit of intensity. I think the filter models are quite nice and "analog sounding". I think it's definitely possible to get analog sounding sounds out of the modwave.
      But in the end it comes down to what inspires you and what sounds you like. I would definitely try out analog synths if you have a synth shop nearby. The Minilogue XD sounds good, I think. I have the Monologue and I'm very happy with that. It's a lovely instrument with its own unique character. However, it's a very different synth than the modwave and is nowhere near as versatile when it comes to sound design.

    This is a very nice patch! Are there any samples included or is it all just oscillators ( I did not watch the whole video but ofc I gave it a like!) ?

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use one of the choir samples in oscillator 2 layer B. The rest is wavetables. I could probably have done without the choir sample and the patch would sound mostly the same. I think the samples complement the wavetables in a nice way.

      @@Waveformer Tusen takk for your response. Btw. I suppose I want to gather equipment for DAWless music production. I really don't like all this sound design and other work with the mouse and having to click play, pause, record and so on all the time 😆 anyhow, in the bigger picture I'm aiming for Korg Wavestate, Modwave, Opsix, Minilogue XD and probably Elektron Cycles. I have an focusrite audio interface and ofc monitors. But then... I have no idea what I need to synchronise the internal clocks of the devices and how to mix them properly, etc. What type of gear do I need for that? I'm on a budget (as you see I'm not going for the most expensive synths).

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vidarhjal you can connect all devices to your computer and do the clock sync using MIDI over USB. If you use your DAW as master clock everything should be in sync automatically. I don’t use a DAW but instead use the Retrokits RK-006 to sync everything over standard MIDI (not USB). As for audio, either use a sound cards with enough input and record directly to the DAW, or use an external mixer. I use the Bluebox mixer for this. There are cheaper mixers out there. Or you could build your own passive mixer for less than 10 USD. Schematics in the community section of my TH-cam channel. Good luck :-).

      samples are the oscillators. Not stuck with ONLY square waves, sine etc. Try a car crash effect?

    Hi,
    Just a quick question.
    There are 2 oscillators that can play 2 wavetables.Can 2 different multi samples be loaded .So Are 4 different multi samples supported? Osc1 A and B And Osc2 A and B.
    Can all the 4 multisamples have different velocity and keyboard zones?
    Many thanks!

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. An oscillator can play just one multi sample. So Layer A Osc 1 and Osc 2 can play one multi sample each. And Layer B Osc 1 and Osc 2 can play one multi sample each. So it’s two multi samples per layer for a total of four multi samples in one performance.
