    The idea that no one has the desire to remaster classic 25-year old cartoons or releasing them on Blu-Ray are absurd. Warner Bros has done a great job with remastering the Batman and Superman animated shows from the 90s for Blu-Ray, even with some of the original masters from Batman Beyond no longer accessible.

    It's flabbergasting how studios have not transitioned their standard definition shows into SD-BD formats. The obvious advantages from manufacturing less discs to making the shows nearly HD in appearance makes it a no-brainer.
    Imagine getting something like TMNT 1987 & 2003 on SD-BD's. It would make the lives of fans so much easier & preserve these shows better than DVDs ever could.

    • @zaranyzerak

I tried my best to convince Ncircle to at least consider blu-ray but theyre so arrogant in their reserved ways my advice probably got ignored. Its a shame cause every Sonic cartoon has gotten a blu-ray except SatAM and Sonic Undeground. I guess Sega or these companies ar biased against anything associated with SatAM cause even Archie comics gets ignored despite its long ass history.

      Yeah, the responses you got from that guy really shed a lot of light on just how out of touch some of these companies are. I'm sure I speak for everyone in saying we appreciate your efforts in at least trying to get them to see sense! And you were a lot more civil about it than I probably would have been lol.
      The Archie comics situation is complicated and just plain depressing. Over 25 years of comics locked away forever because of Ken Penders' ego trip lawsuit (google it if you don't know the whole story). Sadly we'll likely never see new compilations of those because of that mess. At least IDW had been doing a great job picking up the ball after they dropped it.
      Thanks again for posting those responses for everyone to see, it wasn't what any of us wanted to hear but it shed a lot of light on why releases like these are so lackluster.

I totally agree more people should do the Diskotech thing, but the nature of the beast is this: DVD's are just too dime-a-dozen to be gotten rid of anytime soon. It outlasted it's 2 replacements and it even somehow survived in the streaming age. Something that clearly should've killed it off, much like how VHS killed Betamax or Compact Cassette killed 8-Track.

    In fact, the only complaints I can find is that an episode (Hedgehog of the Hound Table) randomly glitches out for a few seconds (however it's the transfer that's glitching, not the DVD) and the DiC logo is removed on every episode. I can't believe Bluray isn't the standard, even for SD stuff. I love my Diskotek Adventures of Sonic set because I can let it run for hours in the background and I don't need to change disks every 4-6 episodes. I consider that a HUGE benefit. If Bluray was the standard, I actually think physical media sales would improve, because changing disks is almost always at the top of most people's reasons for NOT buying physical media. Now you still gotta change disks, but bluray makes it so you have to do it about 75% less.

    I’m so glad you made this video and I stumbled upon it. As someone who _loves_ Sonic SatAM, and who has the original Shout! Factory set, I was surprised to happen on this set at the store a few days ago and wondering whether I needed to look into it. Thankfully I chose not to nab me a copy. I still remember the night I found the Shout! Factory one. My friend walked over with it to get my attention and I snatched it from his hand shouting, “Mine!” He laughed.
    Immediately looking at it, what made them think this was a good design?! The image of Sonic and Sally together looks like an action/adventure cover that doesn’t properly convey that emotion unless you’re directly familiar with the show. It’s clearly based on Sally hanging onto Sonic as he hightails it out of there. It’s unflattering for the depiction of Sally who is the second most important character (hero) in this show and an icon to this particular entry in the greater franchise to have the derp expression on her face. As much as I don’t care for Ken Penders’ art (I don’t hate HIM though), at least he knew how to create an image that invoked everything you needed to know about the show for the cover on Shout! Factory’s release. The back art is equally subpar and that’s on top of the fact that Antoine has his Season 2 outfit yet Sally and Rotor are in their Season 1 appearance (e.g. no blue vest) and Bunnie has the wrong arm roboticized.
    But if we use the recent AoStH release, there are so many hidden gems to unearth from SatAM like the original intro that _was_ animated or the original broadcast version of “Super Sonic” used on the ABC Saturday Morning Preview Special where Michael Tavera sings the theme song instead of Noisy Neighbors, or .pdf’s of the unproduced Season 3 episodes or something!😧 At least Shout! Factory understood how important SatAM was to the franchise compared to all other Sonic shows and media given the Archie comic was based off of it.
    And there are whole new interviews with the surviving cast who have become legends in the industry (Rob Paulsen or Jim Cummings) who could do whole new interviews for this set. This new one seems more like overproduced bootleg.

    I know I’m late on the party, but why is it that companies like Discotek media can release Lupin the third part one on Blu-ray and that series came out in 1971-1972 but not only did they give it an HD remaster, but it also has special features like art galleries, extensive linear notes, essays, and episode commentaries plus an all new English dub from the 2000s cast. And the reason why they did that is because they want to cater to the fans. And they too respect the series/franchise.

    After the program's initial run, it appeared on the USA Network's Action Extreme Team block from June 1997 to January 1998. ABC did not replicate this, replacing Sonic with reruns of Free Willy.
    In September 2003, DIC revealed a new international package consisting of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog and the Sonic Christmas Blast special, titled "Totally Sonic!". The package would also feature never-before seen episodes, digitally re-mastered, color-enhanced versions of the shows with new contemporary music, as well as bonus director's cut "Secret Sonic" episodes. The package will also include Secret, new director's cut Secret Sonic episodes. The release of the Totally Sonic! package coincides with the new Sonic the Hedgehog video game, Sonic Heroes from Sega. It was supposed to be airing in local syndication as part of their DiC Kids' Network and international buyers in all major languages.

    This new DVD from Ncircle has the episodes in airdate order rather than production order like the shout! set had them.
    The pilot episode actually did air at the end of season one on ABC. Makes more sense for them to bury it at the end of the season honestly since it's so radically different from the rest of the series.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Makes no sense to have the pilot at the end, which places it smack dab in the middle of the series. So we have the "normal" show where everything looks properly on-model and has lovely story continuity, then suddenly go BACK to the janky look and style of the pilot? Nah, put it at the front, get that formative chapter out of the way right out of the gate, then the remaining 25 episodes have no interruptions in style or story.

    • @pacmancdi
      @pacmancdi 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@zaranyzerak I meant that at that time it made more sense to stick it at the end of the season. Perhaps when they made that decision the show hadn't yet been renewed for a second season?
      I think shows should be presented in original airdate order whenever possible on DVD and streaming. I understand that's not always practical if a show was made for syndication or whatever but this version of Sonic was a network series.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Airdate order isn't always the optimal order though, especially if a show is intended by the creators to have a specific flow or continuity to the episodes and the station/network airs them in a different order.
      Look at Firefly. Fox aired that completely out of order even airing the first episode literally last, and all the rest in completely random order effectively destroying the continuity and making it very confusing for first time viewers.
      Star Trek TOS was aired completely out of the intended order based on the network feeling that "monster episodes" should be up front to promote the show more as they felt the pilot was too "cerebral" for the average viewer.
      X-Men The Animated Series literally had episode intended to air earlier not aired until a season or more later, completely messing up the continuity.
      Star Wars Clone Wars also has a continuity order, the order the creators of the show have said multiple times is the order they would prefer people watch, that also spans across seasons.
      Sonic SatAM has a pretty clear continuity and intended order to view the episodes, which is absolutely NOT the same as airdate order. And as I said, just in terms of look and flow alone putting the pilot in the middle is very jarring and interrupts an otherwise very pleasant and logical flow to the episodes.
      Same as if you watched the Star Trek TOS pilot in the middle of Season 1, all the costumes are different, some of the cast is different, several characters have different positions on the crew, etc. It makes no sense placing it where the network did for the original airings. Fine if you want to "experience it the way the world first did," but that's literally the only reason to watch in that order.
      Airdate order is rarely completely correct. Continuity and intention of the creators of the actual show should ALWAYS take precedence over the often arbitrary airdate order mandated by the network/station. It isn't as sacrosanct an episode order as you might think.

    • @pacmancdi

      @@zaranyzerak Fair enough. Season 1 of SatAM were all stand alone stories that could be really watched in any order. But the season 2 airing order works fine.... Although I think "game guy" makes a better introduction to the new season than sonic conversion in my humble opinion.

  • @Futuredynamo
    @Futuredynamo 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I agree with most of what you have said here. However, I think the idea of retiring the DVD format as a whole is a catch-22. When you look at sales data, DVD is still outselling Blu-Ray and even more so 4K Blu-Ray.
    With physical media, unfortunately, on a perpetual decline, and that gradually having greater and greater impacts (i.e. Australia no longer getting Disney physical media as just one example), killing off the dominant format - even if it is the most inferior from a technical standpoint - is only going to make things worse. People who still buy DVDs and never adopted BD or 4k BD are not necessarily likely to adopt those formats now in response to DVD going away. They may just do more streaming.
    And if such a huge segment of physical media is cut off like that, it could have a ripple effect on the other formats that could aid in killing them off as well.
    Don't get me wrong. I agree with you on the advantages of SD BD, and how ridiculous the response from NCircle was. But the sad reality is that if DVD were to end entirely, the result may just be some of these shows not getting released/re-released at all, and possibly physical media dying faster as a whole.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'm not saying just stop DVD overnight, of course that would be ridiculous and catastrophic. There should be (and should have been by now) a gradual phasing out, with SD content solely being moved over to SD-BDs over time. Have combo packs like they did with the two subsequent formats, so you could still have your current format while at the same time future proofing by having the next format ready for whenever you upgrade. It can and should have been done years ago. And to see those resistant and just plain ignorant comments about such from a person in the industry, was infuriating. That kind of attitude is literally holding everything back.
      Yes, DVD sells well because it's cheap and we're in a recession. Plain and simple. My point is the phasing out process should have started over a decade ago, in which case the present situation may have been very different. Greater adoption of the technology, in a time when streaming was still in its infancy, would have driven competition between manufacturers of the technology and media, driving prices down for consumers. Cheaper players, and with no more competition from DVD, cheaper media - Blu-ray players and discs would be at the price point of DVD now so the price argument wouldn't even matter, it WOULD be the cheap choice. We would be there NOW and DVD would rightfully be a thing of the distant past. Wal-Mart shelves would be lined with Blu-rays as the cheap choice instead of DVDs. Blu-rays WOULD be as cheap as DVDs are now. 4K would be the premium format for collectors. That's my point.
      The industry has been dragging its heels for so long, clinging to DVD for the cheap production costs (which would also have gone down by now if the tech was more widely adopted and pushed) and short term profits, resisting the very idea of SD-BD to a near ludicrous point, held ALL of that back and now here we are. In a streaming world, in a recession, and a nearly 30 year old format still lingering long past its welcome. A near 30 year old SD format while every other piece of technology we have in our homes for media and content has been full HD for nearly 20 years. Even VHS, one of the biggest and most successful home media formats ever made, was phased out in a proper timeframe. It lingered for a FEW years after DVD came along, then was appropriately phased out to make way for the new format. The same should have happened to DVD when Blu-ray came along, and ABSOLUTELY should have happened by now with 4K the new flavor. We shouldn't have THREE generations of home video formats on the shelves by this point. There should be no more than two. A cheap one and a premium one.
      With the streaming world on the brink of imploding under its own hubris, and physical media enjoying something of a small comeback as people become more and more disenfranchised with streaming services rotating out their favorite shows constantly and are finally seeing the advantage of actually OWNING the shows and movies they like on physical media so they can watch them any time they want and not be privy to the whims of streaming services, it's hard to say where things will go from here. But one thing is certain - they absolutely messed this whole evolution of technology up by letting DVD linger far too long. At this point, all we can do is wait and seeing how this whole streaming service bubble burst shakes out, see where this physical media comeback goes (and if it's anything significant) then go from there. At the very least, more companies NEED to start putting out SD-BD titles for SD content. That is long, long overdue.

      There's also a demand for bootlegs of streaming shows because not everyone wants to pay for multiple subscriptions for streaming services. Physical media is not dead yet and likely will not die soon. I can still purchase a myriad of options of DVD and Blu-ray players, and stores still carry hundreds of DVD and Blu-ray options, especially Best Buys.
    As an addendum-all mediums technically require some degree of physicality. With this in mind, anyone with enough intelligence and the means and resources to do so could preserve digital media in their own physical forms. And it is not as difficult as it sounds. You could theoretically stream to a device and record the data direct from stream and then decompress and decrypt it as a means of making your own media.
    And for reference, this is permitted under the principles of timeshifting. (Recording media for later watching with any method of recording, traditionally VHS), so long as you do not attempt to profit off of it illicitly.

    What’s sad is many popular HD-produced shows still get DVD-only releases.
    Bluey is a show with a massive following among both kids and adults. But it still gets only DVD releases, with no Blu-ray in sight. Despite being produced in 1080p.
    But even more adult shows get DVD-only releases. Fox’s New Girl, a TV-14 live action sitcom, only has a DVD release, despite being made in 1080p HD, but at least the entire series made it to DVD.
    And even more baffling is 13 Reasons Why, where only the first two seasons out of four got a physical release, and only on DVD despite being shot and made in 4K UHD, with Netflix streaming the series in 4K. I don’t even like 13 Reasons Why but it’s baffling they didn’t commit (no pun intended) to releasing the entire series on DVD, or maybe even Blu-ray.
    And the show is TV-MA, even when it’s also marketed to teenagers.

      @benpodvia5744 Yeah. And 4K Ultra HD too unless the show was only ever made in 1080p and wouldn’t benefit much from an upscale.

    I’m born in 1999 (Just an Old Gen Z) I first watched this show in Netflix 2013 when I was 12 years old unfortunately. But I grew up with plenty of older Disney movies(40s,50s,60s,70s,) and mgm movies even Don Bluth films which I love it … I’m glad I found this video however. I’m very disappointed they haven’t put much effort on this . If only DIC did not sell there business out. Hell I was looking for special features at least. Not quite sure why they didn’t think of putting it in Blu-ray however ? But of course we would f****** want that!

    I got mines by the time it came out and the quality looked pretty bad and it does looked like its from an old VHS. Thank Goodness I have the Shout Factory DVD release of it. with a ton of features and take each time to make it looked better. Glad I found that show back in late 2019, even though I never grew up with the show. Anyway, the 2 disc set wasn't a very good re-release. I'll keep it just for the sake of a re-release. crazy I've been a fan of that show in early 2020. I knew N'circle should have release the show on Blu-ray and I was right -_- Don't understand why the companys has to be so lazy by making a type of release or re-release like this, It's Ridiculous.

    The most baffling thing about all this is that NCircle released a Sonic Boom complete series steelbook last year, clearly meant for collectors.
    Granted, I don't recommend this set because it's a stacked disc nightmare, but still.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      They did indeed! I have the Sonic Boom set, and you're quite right - other than the stacked discs, it definitely had collectors in mind. I have most of the Sonic Boom releases leading up to that as well, planning to do a Closer Look at the whole works soon.

    You’re wrong about no kids buying this stuff. I’m 14 and I have many friends both the same age, younger and older that’s into collecting physical media we appreciate this a lot. Me personally I only use streaming unless I absolutely have to, I always watch my movies from my dvd, blu-Ray, or 4k collection. If Ncircle did an actual decent job I would 100% buy this but from what I hear nah I think I’ll pass.

    Man SD-BD is such an amazing format with phenomenal results, but so many ignorant companies don't capitalize on it because they don't bother even trying. Imagine seeing Transformers G1 on SD-BD, or Thundercats and Voltron amongst many others. The possibilities are endless; yet instead of putting effort, they'd rather resort to outdated formats then giving the fans what they deserve.
