    I would like to see cubic inches per minute thrown in there with feeds and speeds just to make it clear how much slower you're having to cut the exotic materials - yes, I can always do the math based on depth of cut and inches per minute, but lots of people won't bother.

    we've been using a dodeka for awhile with the general purpose, started using it on 316ss but having issues so i check this video out, i found the grade you're using from a supplier, we are only taking a .030 depth of cut so i was gonna start at your feed and speed and go from there, but i checked your site and noticed you dont have that grade anymore and had a more heavy duty one, would you recommend the one from the video or try the other stainless general or heavy duty one from your site?

    I ran my new dodeka mini with the .022 chip load 1500 SFM .025 step down and it did ok but the surface finish was not as good as we need. It also hurt the insert a bit. Kennametal has the recommendations at .0055 but that seems to conservative. Anyone have some input for a good finish speed and feed as well as roughing that doesn't hurt the insert? We are running it on a brand new DMG so holding and machine are not the issue. Thanks in advance.

      Austenitic stainless steels do not harden on quenching, although they do work harden quite rapidly which is why you never dwell in a cut or let the tool rub. Work hardening also means that the chips are hard as hell so recutting them is a great way to destroy your tool - chip clearance is extra important when machining stainless steel. 1018 might quench harden under very high cooling rates but that won't happen in a cutting operation. If your parameters are good most of the heat should be going into the chip anyway.

    So how well of a surface finish do these facemills leave behind on a finish pass. We have been looking into new shell mills for our facing/ roughing operations. Also we only have cat40 machines how well would these cutters handle smaller machines?

    • @barrysetzer
      @barrysetzer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question 11! This video was done on a cat40, but this tool even functions well even in a 30 taper machine, like our Tormachs. As for a finish pass, and possible surface finish, i just might do a video on that in the near future.

    So...the lesson for today is "plug in the correct feeds and speeds, install the proper inserts in your shell mill, and the machine will do the work." Which all our budding young machinists need to know.
    Question though: you used different inserts for aluminum, steel and exotic metals. I'm reading that as the KCSM40 is harder than the KCPH30 and that insert is harder than the KC410M. Is there a reason you couldn't standardize on the hardest insert and run everything with it?

    • @barrysetzer
      @barrysetzer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be perfectly honest, i am not sure how the KCSM40 would perform in aluminum. Im sure it could cut it, but i am unsure how the coating would react with sticky materials. If you end up trying it, please tag me on our FB group……i would be curious to see how they work

    • @jmowreader9555

      @@barrysetzer I don't think there's much chance of me trying it, at least not right now...I work in a sign shop and the most aggressive tool I've got is my 50-watt UV laser cutter. I have definite need for a CNC router to mill aluminum and high density urethane, but space is at a bit of a premium...with the Indigo digital press, 64" roll-to-roll inkjet, 126" roll-to-roll inkjet and 96" flatbed printers, plus all the finishing equipment we use - contour cutter, laminator, Fotoba straight cutter, quite a bit of print binding gear and Fletcher signboard cutter - we've got JUST enough room to turn around in there. Unless I can convince the boss to buy an old grocery store, the router's going to have to take up residence in my garage at home. Do you have any preferences as to CNC routers?

      Hey Richard, I did take a look at this, and the answer is that my surface footage calculation takes depth of cut into account. The cut diameter of this tool is 3", but as you get deeper, the tool outside diameter is 3.150. So with the insert angled, the deeper your cut, the bigger your tool diameter is.

      As Titan likes to say, "If the spindle ain't turnin........you ain't EARNIN!" And for the price of this tool, you could literally buy 1 with the aluminum inserts and 1 with the general purpose inserts for all 3 machines, and your return on investment would be around 40 tool changes. In the past, I have worked at shops like this, and usually it helps change their way of thinking by doing a time study on how long the average tool change takes, then showing them how much time/money they could save by eliminating that waste.
