The difference between U2 and most other bands is when you are at their concerts you not only hear the music you feel it, thats why they are special.
This song and this version in particular is an orgasm to the brain and ears

The actual meaning of the song is always mixed and has taken so many different angles. Which is brilliant.
Im sure it’s written as a conversation between a father and son. The son is telling his homophobic religious father that he is gay. Read it in quite a few u2 books
In 2005, Bono said "It's a father-and-son story. I tried to write about someone I knew who was coming out and was afraid to tell his father. It's a religious father and son
Now listen to the song and the lyrics again with that conversation in mind. The song will blow your socks off even more

A lot of people think that this is a love song, and it's not. It's really not.
At the time "One" was written, U2 were on the verge of seriously breaking up. After "The Joshua Tree", all four members seemed to have different ideas of where to go next.
The process of writing and recording in Berlin was hell. They couldn't agree on anything.
"One" itself was a happy accident that ended up saving the band.
With all that being said, Bono wrote the lyrics about hurt and betrayal and trying to find something to hold on to while everything that you've built is falling apart around you.
Those themes of hurt and betrayal come up a few times on that record. "Until the End of the World", "So Cruel", and most notably "Love Is Blindness", the last track on the album.
The Edge wrote that song whilst he was in the midst of a bitter divorce, that on top of the division within the band at the time.
Looking back, it's a dark album. Different than anything they've ever done.
It's also partially about Edge's divorce, which was falling apart at the time. Bono has also said it's partially about an HIV+ gay son coming out to his father.

Bono was crying a lot at this performance because he just lost his father Bob a few days before this concert happened!!

Seen them live quite a few times and each concert was amazing. Probably the best for me was in May 1992 at Earls Court on zoo tv tour.
