- Welcome back to the Cozy Log Home DIY series! In today's episode, we're diving deep into the world of home construction, comparing two popular methods: log home building and traditional stick framing. Whether you're planning to build your dream home or just curious about different construction styles, this episode is packed with valuable insights.
Pros of Log Homes:
Aesthetic Appeal: Log homes offer a classic, rustic look that is hard to replicate with other materials.
Natural Insulation: The thickness and density of the logs provide excellent natural insulation, keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Durability and Strength: Properly maintained log homes can last many generations, withstanding harsh weather conditions.
Cons of Log Homes:
Maintenance: Log homes require regular maintenance, including staining and sealing to protect against moisture and pests.
Cost: Typically, building a log home can be more expensive than a stick-framed house due to the materials and specialized labor.
Pros of Stick-Framed Homes:
Flexibility in Design: Stick framing offers more flexibility in architectural design and modifications.
Cost-Effective: Generally, these homes are less expensive to build and maintain than log homes.
Quicker Construction: The construction process for stick-framed homes is usually faster due to the availability of materials and ease of construction.
Cons of Stick-Framed Homes:
Energy Efficiency: While advancements have been made, stick-framed homes can still lag behind in energy efficiency compared to log homes without additional insulation.
Soundproofing: These homes may require extra insulation to achieve the same level of soundproofing as log structures.
Join us as we explore these construction styles with real-world examples and expert insights. By the end of this episode, you'll have a clearer understanding of which building method suits your needs and preferences. Toupee is looking extra luxurious today Cody! Quite the testament to your glue that it stays on so well in that wind!
Indeed,
I follow your reasoning. But the log cabin will be well built design. And I appreciate your need to get it done as quickly as possible.
@@wranglerstar Must be the Loctite Red!
@@westtexasprepper 😆 beat me to it.
Rumor has it, he uses loctite
When you’re sitting on your deck drinking coffee you’ll have the best view ever of the mountain. That’s an absolutely beautiful view.
I'm thinking it's a starter house for Jack.

Wind messin’ with the toupe.
So glad I bought 320 acres in an unorganized township with tree and mineral rights, and no building permits required.
That’s awesome
West Virginia, right?

Love to see you taking care to provide for your children's future. Times aren't the same as they were for previous generations and you are doing more than right by your family. Thanks for sharing the journey with us as well.
Cody, appreciate the transparency and addressing the questions we continue to see in the comments from the keyboard warriors! Been following for over a decade now…Cheers!
Whatever the cost, there are huge savings with the heavy equipment work and utilities work you did. And so satisfying knowing you did quality work yourself.
While doing good work, it's great to have a good sense of humor 😀
That makes the universe joyful ✨️
The content from actually building the cabin vs. stripping and notching logs is WAY more compelling. Thanks for a 'behind the scenes' episode. This is a great type of format to keep in the rotation. Good Luck to Jack!
I lost my old account. When I got my new one you were the first TH-camr I searched for. Cabin is coming along.
Good video! Answering common questions your viewers have is just as important as the rest of the content.
Really admire your abilities, Cody....
Man I love that property!!! Stunning scenery !!
Can’t wait to build our home like you guys that’s so awesome
Nice “check up”. Thanks Cody!
Awesome Job on Jacks part.Everyone’s who’s been here since the start well be here.
*Wranglerstar* Bravo well done, thank-you sir for taking the time to bring us along. GOD Bless.
Good luck Jack! And Cody, may the Father continue to watch over you and your house.
look forward to this build, thanks for the great content
You are swinging down to my neck of the woods I hope you guys have a great time! Also it's getting warm so act accordingly. I will pray for your safe travels.
Such a beautiful place to live!
Looking forward to watching the log home come together. So far excellent work.
I understand that but yes I would like to see that again I watched all your app that says back in the day
What a veiw what a mountain 🏔️ what a river your videos are amazing thank you
Enjoying the series.
Essential craftsman made a whole series on building a house. Great series!
I live in the PNW and you can cut down dead trees to use for logs... or use dead logs that are down for log homes. The issue there is going through the dead logs to see which ones are good to use. I have been watching countless videos on guys notching and building with logs, and those channels have exploded...but.... I understand the time limit with your busy channel and life. You can only do what you can do.
Beautiful.... looks like a fun project
Great Job Cody.
The days of being able to buy hardwood for firewood are long gone here also, much less logs. We bought acreage several years ago because of its old growth oak trees, so thankful we did!
A pond is a great asset whenever you have water flowing through your land.
*Act Accordingly*
Thanks for answering all those questions. I was in the valley last Friday cutting the kings firewood, (don’t tell on me) and I drove by to go to Travis’s Dairy and was curious about why it was so close to the road. I assumed it was not by choice.
Cody. I recommend covering your logs with opaque plastic, such as lumber wrap, to protect them from the sun and the rain, if you are going to leave them for a while. It will prevent discoloring before you can get them treated.
I built a 3000² ft. split level home in BC in the 80s from scratch with 20" swamp spruce. Even my joists and purlins were logs with 1½" tongue and groove flooring. Logs present a lot of one off issues everywhere for wiring, plumbing, and scribing for fitting doors and walls. It's a lot of extra work. But far more unique and homey.
Cody, we welcome you to South Carolina!
Im looking forward for the woodstove install ! And the silver pennies 🎉 for the footing
Great questions.
Great answers.
Thank You Sir.
Also......
That critter on top of your head looks like it's about to make a run for it.
Just a "heads" up. 😉
Looking great so far! Cant wait for the build to begin. Unlike the USA, Australia's forestry has died, the greens have locked up the forests, and all sawmills have been shut down in my state anyway
The wind sure tried today, but Cody's toupet glue prevailed! 😉
Looking forward to the build-videos, if I lived nearby I'd come and help with that build party, which sounds truly cool!
Good luck to Jack on the nationals!
Greetings from South Carolina. Good luck to Jack in his upcoming debate in the Palmetto State!
Heck yea I’d stick around and watch the process. Maybe it’s because I’m 41 and still have an attention span. Example of that content is when Matt from demolition ranch bought the abandoned mansion. Either way I’ll always watch your content it’s entertaining and informative. I can’t get enough lol. Keep it coming I’m watching from the prison state of upstate ny
Hi Cody, it’s interesting. You mentioned the kings forest. Up here in Canada, we call it Crown land and it is the King’s forest. However, even here we can get a free permit to go cut our firewood in the King’s Forest.
I love your stuff and I'm old school and prefer long form content. I have tried to learn to be a better man and proho.
Awesome content ..
I love the look of a log home. Not a huge fan of the exterior maintenance required or the challenges of running wiring inside if you're not going to frame the interior.
Probably worth it though.
I would love to watch every cabin building video no matter how long
That toupee must be from Morrie's. "Morrie's wigs never come off, even in the water."
Secure it up good with it being close to that road
$150k is wild!
There are still small logging operations in Vermont. Thank God!
I remember you building the log cabin, watched the whole thing. I believe that many would watch but as you said, the world has changed. As to the setback, crazy that YOU buy the land and they can rezone it to the point that you can’t use it, BUT they will still tax you for that “river front property”. Even if YOU pay for it, it’s not truly yours. Be Safe Out There
Log cabins are another but quite. They always make a lot of sounds
The fixed expenses are going to be around 200,000$ when the dust settles (For high quality work).
Time to switch to the summer toupee!
Will you be putting joist tape on the structure of your deck before decking? Looking to details on the cost structure, appreciate the insight and honesty!
Wind playing havoc with the syrup. 😉
4:38 I’m ignorant on this, but do you cover that up with a tarp to keep rain and moisture off it or is it weather treated so you don’t have to worry about that?
Be careful in that wind, brother. The edges of that beautiful hairpiece looked like they were beginning to pull free.
Aside from that, this was a great explanation on location and the construction plan.
Hi Cody, As you're building on a flood plain. Did you consider building an amphibious house?. They seem to build them in the Netherlands .
I'm wondering how high that creek gets.
Enjoy South Carolina! It would be awesome to bump into you. Gotta get you to sign my 940 one day
I was thinking 200K. Either way, great investment!
Depends on the environment in the Pacific Northwest trees are everywhere whereas the MIdwest there aren't very many forests and what few forest there tend to be heavily protected besides both stick and frame and log home building concepts are the same strength so just depends on the environment and what resources it has available especially when it comes to places like the two tornado allies.
Medal building far superior
your Hair looks amazing! Wow!
Virgin coconut groomed hair
Will you be using it for an Air B&b?
its crazy i commercial fish in ky at ky lake and lake barkley but i drive through land between the lakes all the time and they have this sign on side of road that says wranglers campground. i always think of you when i see it lol.
cody, i like your new hair cut reminds me of elvis presley hahaha😝
$150,000 !!!!! thats way more than i thought
I'm an electrical contractor and it never fails when people call wanting us to wire a cabin that they usually think the price will be relative to the size of their project, and of course they always want everything to be ALL electrical and the cost is practically the same as wiring a large conventional home.
West coast Man!
What’s next? Engineered trusses too?
Shawn James does longform content it's all about the editing.
That’s really interesting. Do you think they’ll go through with that regulation change and then try to force some extra taxes because the building is inside the limit?
That is so sad, deforestisation is couse these extreme heatwaves, the corrporations are cousing the problem, but they go after the lil guy, good job , looks great
You dont need to explain yourself cody, keep doing you brother!
do you have to worry about termites up in the PNW? I would love a cabin like this in desert down here in Arizona if I knew the termites wouldn't ruin it within a few years
As a guy who was fascinated watching you put a new door in and do siding on your old house I'd probably watch you make just about anything. Probably not representative of the greater audience though.
God bless
I feel for you Cody. I also have lots of flood land. Most of it is woods or farm field. I am also a one man show. Any building is a pain in the @@@. I live on what is named a creek but it is the size of your river. Lots of land no place to build. But I love my creek and woods.
Lincoln Logs all the way !
I'm down in Lane County, I'd sell you some nice 2nd growth douglas fir.
I would be very curious what percentage of your cost was just permits and fees.
that toupee sure is flopping in the wind!!!!!
Should be sweet when complete. Pricier than I imagined.
Timber frame it
My guess is 250k. I’ve been building for 50 years and an excellent estimator.
I’m not saying you should do it, but My Self Reliance does those long form cabin build videos and he has comparable subs to you. It may be a different sub experience though.
I prefer Timberframe myself
So you live in a timber framed house?
A lot of land here around me in Alabama is owned by a large timber company…it’s really sad.
What is the future plans? What is the plan for the cabin? It seems really small. 432 square foot log home. 🤔
Just like the Natural Resources Wales, controlling logging in North Wales especially.
You look like Superman’s off grid uncle who lives in woods with that toupee!
Man 100ft that still close. Would you ever consider doing dron fly over the whole property to let as see and undenstand better how everything is situatad? or is that to deep o your family privacy ?
I think your next purchase should be a pompadour toupee....of course that'll take changing the diet of the hair "donors' to achieve such magnificence. Although I'm sure the cost per "piece" would be higher; a man of your stature and circumstance should be able to pull that off. Of course you'd have to work with your 'fabricant de chapeaux' to have the appropriate hat to complement such a hair peace but I think you could do it.
Most people upload a video everyweek....take a break dude and when your well rested amazing videos are coming
Take care of yourself
Smart call Cody. I agree, much more efficient this way, plus rapid gratification for viewer opposed to a slow series that like you said would become too long and as someone with adhd I’m certain after ten videos I would stop watching.
But did you get the former Mayer
No thermal insulation under the floor ? No thermal insulation to the water feed pipe ?
We are not done please be patient
GOD bless you and your whole family ✝️
What happened to the first cabin you were building?
They moved properties and I believe a lot of the timber that he had milled was stolen.
@@westtexasprepper I thought he started one on the new property down by the river where the wall tent is
Jacks house ?
