White Belt Submits Brown Belt in Jiu Jitsu Competition

  • I did not expect my match with the Brown Belt to go the way it did.
    This was my last competition as a white belt. I had been training for about a year and 3 months, about 9 times a week. I was promoted to blue belt shortly after. I’ve documented my jiu jitsu journey on my Instagram ⬇️
    Instagram at @JoshRichIV
    Additional Note: The first division that I competed in in this video was the white/blue belt division. And I had no prior grappling experience before starting jiu jitsu.

    I watched this for about 2 minutes, listening to his commentary and watching his movement and awareness and thought to myself like so many others here, "No way in hell he's a white belt." Then I looked at the video description, and read his explanation. I decided to crunch some numbers, and realized, yes this is plausible, however it is not probable for most of us regular athletes. Here's how I broke it down: He's been training ~15 months, 9x per week. Let's say 1 hour each time (probably more, but just for sake of ease.) Anyway, 1 year is 52 weeks, 3 months is ~15 weeks. 52+15=67 weeks training. 67x9x/wk=603 training sessions total.
    Let's compare that to the casual BJJ athlete training 2x/wk. 67x2=134 training sessions for the casual student. 603/134=4.5
    That means he has 4.5x the training experience as the casual student for the same time period, or the equivalent to 5.6 years+ worth of average training. That would put him in the senior purple belt ranks. So given his background, he may have been wearing a white belt, but he has a natural athleticism and talent for Jiu-Jitsu, combined with at least a senior purple belt's level of training experience. Puts things into perspective.
    Regardless, those Ws were well earned. Congrats!

    I'm incredibly skeptical that he rolled like that with only three months of experience and no prior grappling. It's not that he is just competing at a higher level, it's that he is rolling like that and pulling off moves that are very intricate and require knowing multiple scenarios and details that are just difficult to build awareness in just 3 months of training every day. . Even learning moves like the twister is very difficult to be able to do it comfortably in high-stress, to a BJJ practitioner is deff odd. A beginner 3 months in and competing at an expert level, I'd might believe it especially if he is athletically gifted- but I have a hard time believing it with the moves and the way he rolls. If he is lying I hope he gets exposed as he is misleading a lot of people as indicated by the comments.

He does have the technical skills of a blue or purple due to the amount of training. 9x a week is a lot and I'm not hating on it, I think it's great. White belts with no experience don’t roll like this in a matter of months, year, or two years! I did expert at blue belt and won but the highest ranks in that division I competed with were purple belts! Feel bad for these guys in the beginner division 😅 definitely sandbagger

    • @phoenixamaranth
      @phoenixamaranth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, he should have been moved to blue or purple belt and not entering into beginner divisions. He may legitimately only have 1 year and a few months training, but he's clearly lived in the gym during that time and spent lots of time studying up as well. We have a kid at my gym who got obsessed with BJJ once he started and he's training twice a day most days and studying online at home. He easily won beginner competitions and our coach moved him to blue belt within a year. He's a legit blue belt quickly approaching purple belt knowledge just needs more hands on practice and our coach recognized he'd be sandbagging if he continued with a lower belt.

    This guys is really good regardless of grade. I've heard people say for years they have zero martial arts experience when its clear they have. One of the guys I trained with for years was a Jiu Jitsu wizard but also technically a white belt. Judo black belt, Pro MMA 10-0, was submitting BJJ Blackbelts in MMA. I have a student who just got his blue belt but had grappled for 10 years and was a competitive wrestler, he's at least purple belt level on the mat albeit to be fair probably doesn't have the knowledge of the Gi of a regular purple belt, I've seen him no gi submit brown belts too. Yes it's hours not years. I suspect the lad here has done some form of similar martial art or sport for a long time and has adapted very quickly to No Gi BJJ. He'll progress though his belts very quickly I imagine.

Josh likely would compete higher but he simply isnt allowed so has to qualify at lower levels. ALSO from my understanding Josh spends a TON of time studying and training to get better ASAP so his 15 months probably is = to 5 years of a casual. Dont hate the on guy its not his choice!!!
