I'll put a word in for "Horse Feathers". The boys go to college to play college football and Groucho is college president. It's wall to wall parody, gags and spoofs. It also includes a fourth Marx brother, Zeppo, who plays a straight character. A brilliant comedy.

The Marx Brothers were pure comedic anarchy. They were famous on the Vaudeville circuit where they would leave the stages and theaters in shambles after they were done with a show. A perfect mix of both physical and verbal slapstick. The crazy wordplay, especially by Groucho, and the wild physicality is brilliant. The're just relentless and hilarious!
I believe their earlier films were originally skits ( shows ) they did on Vaudville, and often in early days they would film during the day, and do live shows at night.
@peterbroad6885 The Marx's first films were adapted from thier Broadway shows. After the 5th "Duck Soup" , Zeppo left the act. Chico made a deal with MGM producer Thalberg, who knew how to make the Marx movies more successful. 1st was "Night at Opera" 2nd was "Day at Races" , but Thalberg died during production. However, the wisdom of 'the Thalberg formula' was employed in all subsequent movies by the Marx Bros
Soooo many reactors will eventually - IF THEY LOVE FILM - research the Marx B's and will walk away thinking, "Why didn't I learn about these films years earlier?"
The Marx Brothers were comedic geniuses, and A Night at the Opera is my favorite of their films. Duck Soup and A Day at the Races are also brilliant. In some of their earlier films, their other brother, Zeppo, also appeared. He always played the handsome straight man. I am so glad you enjoyed this and want to watch more of their antics.
There were actually 5 Marx brothers. Gummo was part of the act when they were in Vaudeville, but he left to fight in WW1 (the war ended before he was deployed). He did not rejoin his brothers and was replaced by the youngest brother, Zeppo who would play the straight man and romantic lead. This was the first film that he did not appear in.
I hope A Day at the Races in on your list too❤️ Harpo playing the harp always makes me a little emotional, he's so great at being funny and silly but there's this seriousness that comes out when he plays, like he's doing the thing he loves the most, you can feel the love in his playing. I grew up watching Marx Bros movies and their humor never ages. Pure gold from start to finish. Also, kudos to Dumont, who plays Mrs Claypool in this one. She’s the ever present straight woman and butt of Groucho’s gags, but was loved by all and had her own immaculate timing.

Groucho's mustache and eyebrows were actually greasepaint. Each brothers were accomplished musicians. Especially Harpo (harp) and Chico (piano) and would play those instruments in each movie.

Once you finish the movies it's worth it to watch Groucho Marx's game show from the 50s "You Bet Your Life". On live TV his wit is just as sharp. Probably want to do a "best of". It's hit or miss depending on the guests.
I agree!!! I used to watch "You Bet You Life" when growing up when it was first on TV and then it was in reruns where I lived, in the '80s when my children were small. I would LOVE to watch that program again. I wasn't aware that there are some here on You Tube, I will have to check that out,
This film and Duck Soup have been my all-time favorites since I was 10 years old. This movie was also the reason why I went to see Il Trovatore (without battleships, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, or other mishaps) at the Metropolitan Opera. I am now a fully-certified opera nerd. One love has lead to another.
For my 40th I received a full set of every Marx Brothers' movies - and I love every one - I'd say this and A Day At The Races are my favourites. Queen named two of their albums after them. :)
Highly recommend Harold Lloyd's Safety Last, it's a silent film, very funny. The whole film is s buildup to the most amazing stunt sequence ever filmed,, no CGI, no special effects, no green screen, all the stunts at height with no Safety wires, and only a painter's platform, with a tiny mattress, 16 ft below him, and if he fell he would have been killed.

Kitty Carlisle was a very good singer and a patron of the opera (and the arts in general). She later married the well-known playwrite, Moss Hart (who often co-wrote with another famous playwrite, George S. Kaufman). She was very famous to American audiences in the '50s and '60s as a panelist on popular TV game shows, like To Tell The Truth, What's My Line and I've Got A Secret, among others.
Just a couple comments. The pretty lady playing Rosa was Kitty Carlisle, who years later was a mainstay on 50s tv game shows, esp. To Tell the Truth. She was a passionate crusader for support of the Arts, becoming an elegant Society lady, and received several national arts recognitions as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The scene of chaos in their small ship room is considered one of the classics of early Hollywood comedies. So, sooo, funny !!!
That's great reacting Dawn! You'll have to get a Groucho pair of glasses with the nose, eyebrows and mustache. Unfortunately as they moved into the 1940s they were forced by circumstances to do a lot of inferior films. Chico was an addicted gambler and needed quick money. They lost their best writers. But there are still some classic gags and especially Groucho songs, like "Lydia, the tattooed lady".
My dad introduced me to the the Marx Brothers long ago...he gloried in telling tells of heading to Minneapolis to see them live. My mother, of course, thought they were a bit on the crude side. It was so much fun to see your reactions. Their comedy is timeless, like all great comedieans.
My favorite line "I saw Mrs. Claypool first... well, her mother saw her first, but there's no point in bringing the Civil War into this"! Making fun of someone being around during the Civil War era would have been a great joke in the 1930s. lol
After having watched this film so many times, the next best thing is watching it through the eyes of someone who hasn't seen it but really gets how good they were. They were truly unique.
I'm so happy you found this movie. No one else bothers watching these fabulous old movies and they are classics for a reason - because they are so good. There are so many Marx Brother movies worth watching and they will put another huge smile on your face.
the scene with Harpo playing the harp....one of the greatest scenes in all of hollywood. he absolutely cast a spell on the extras, no acting, just plain emotional response to a musical performance. and 89 years later, Harpo captivated you too. btw, Chico is pronounced chick - o, not like the spanish chee - ko.
The Marx Brothers were an American classic. These brothers were in the business early on and were huge. Still are!!!! Many one-liners & a super fast delivery. Masters of slap-stick.. You have to pay attention or you miss out. Funny!!!!!!!!!!!
Meant to add to my original comment, the actress who played the rich Mrs. Claypool - Margaret Dumont - was the regular butt of Groucho's jokes in many of their best movies. In real life she was a wonderfully warm and loving person, and all the Marx brothers adored her. She bore the brunt of Groucho's barbs such grace and self-deprecation off set. Also, the megaband Queen were such fans of the Marx Brothers that they named two of their most successful albums, "A Night at the Opera" and "A Day at the Races".
Loved this movie as a kid. No idea if it holds up but I like groucho Marx so I expect it should. About to watch your reaction now. When the Marx Brothers were in vaudeville, Groucho would use a false mustache in their routines. He would often go out between shows. One day, he was late getting back to the theater, and didn't have time to put on the regular mustache, so he grabbed some black shoe polish. That worked so well that it retained it for the rest of his career, though in later life he grew a real one. The Marx Brothers were Jewish. Harpo (real name Adolph, later Arthur) was supposed to play Irish characters in their vaudeville acts, but he could never get rid of his thick Jewish accent, so they made the character silent, and physical comedy became his trademark. Kitty Carlisle (Rosa) and Allan Jones (Ricardo) were both trained opera singers, but made their careers in movies and television. Ms. Carlisle became a fixture on every iteration of the game show 'To Tell the Truth' from the 1950s to the 1970s. A theater at the Performing Center of the Arts in Albany, NY (commonly known as The Egg) is named for her. When the brothers were growing up, the family only had enough money for one of them to take piano lessons. (This was a time when a loaf of bread cost five cents, and piano lessons were 25 cents an hour.) Leonard/Chico, being the oldest, was chosen to get the lessons, but Harpo paid attention and learned as well. He later taught himself to play the harp, hence his nickname. (No matter how much he clowns around, once he sits down to play, he's all business.) Chico developed his own style of playing the piano, including the 'pistol shot' technique demonstrated at 13:35. The Brothers' first movie was 'The Coconuts'. Like their second film, 'Animal Crackers', it was based on a play they were doing on Broadway.
I am so glad knowing that you actually enjoy the old classic movies of the golden age of Hollywood, and it’s so sad that a lot of movies today just don’t cut it anymore. It’s unfortunate that things don’t always change for the better but for the worse.
Groucho hosted his own game show in the 1950s - 'You Bet Your Life'. One of the funniest bits was when Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez played. Pedro went on to appear in many Westerns. TH-cam has his episode. Funny stuff. Groucho was 2nd fiddle this time.
I love the scene when all these people keep coming into their "room" uh closet (LOL) until it's jammed full of people and the another person opens the door and they ALL spill out into the hallway....that is SO FUNNY!! I was looking forward to you showing it here, but you CUt it!! Aaaaaarrrgghhhh!! LOL! This is my favorite Marx Brothers movie followed my Duck Soup, and A Day at the Races. I LOVE Chico's piano playing and Harpo playing the harp. They are such accomplished musicians. Harpo doesn't speak at all, he has a horn on his belt which he squeezes sometime. I have been watching Marx Brothers movies since I was a child in the '50s, their movies were shown on TV on Saturday afternoons back then. SO nice to see a young woman reacting and laughing so heartedly to them. I only saw one other reactor who watched one of their movies, and he just DIDN'T "get" their humor AT ALL! He didn't laugh at ANYTHING. No matter how many times I have watched their movies over the years, they STILL make me laugh. (by the way, GROUCHO'S moustache and eyebrows are PAINTED on, it almost looks like black shoe polish. Dawn Marie: you reacted to this movie exactly how I did lo those many years ago. My chosen careers as editor, typesetter/typographer, and librarian were stimulated by watching "A Night at the Opera." Eventually I watched most of the Marx Brothers movies and reveled in their hilarity and especially the WORD PLAY and visual jokes. You are the perfect foil for the antics of these comic geniuses. Enjoy as many of their films you have time for. Lots of great suggestions here in the comments. The duplicates (5 kids up in Canada) gag (at 7:00) refers to the Dionne quintuplets born in 1934. It was huge news at the time and considered a medical marvel.
Want to give a hat tip to the late great Margaret Dumont, who was great as the lady who delivers straight lines like a pro. She's in a bunch of Marx Brothers movies. In interviews, she admitted she wanted to laugh, but couldn't, since that would break character. She's now famous for keeping a straight face in the face of silliness.
The Marx Brothers were commedic geniuses. If you ever want to hear the story of their work read the Autobiography Harop Speaks. He tells of how his brothers grew up raised by their mother, started in Vaudville, and graduated to the silver screen. They were a riot, and always on too. They had to be locked in their dressing rooms between takes just so they wouldn't wander off and get into all sorts of mischief. And on stage they were just as hilarious. The film crew often were cracking up over their jokes making it hard to work. The director had to seal himself in a sound-proof booth between takes just so he wouldn't be in hysterics during the shoot. But the Marx Brothers were also quite generous and helpful. During the time of The Great Depression their films were some of the few that could still turn a proifit. And they insisted on some large musical numbers like the one seen here just so that every extra on screen could get an easy paycheck.
After watching you watch this, it makes me somewhat envious threat you are watching these for the first time. I remember watching so many good movies for the first time and how I felt. Don't feel like you have missed out on anything. You're watching them now and each one is a new discovery for you, and that's the best. If you ever get a chance, if your local theater plays old movies, go see them there. Having them all at your finger tips at home is convenient, but seeing them in the theater on the big screen is the way to see them. Also, it's always great when Chico and Harpo play. There was also Zeppo Marx, a relatively straight man who performed with the main three for a while. And, there was Gummo, who never was with the guys once they made it big. He was with them in vaudeville.
I remember watching this when I was young and I laughed so hard at the scene where the stage background continues to change up and down simultaneously as the actor was singing. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
While still performing on the stage Groucho wore a fake moustash and one night he was late to the theater and he didn't have time to apply the spirit gum and moustash so he dipped his finger in some grease paint and rubbed it on his upper lip. Every one liked it so that became his signature. 👋
It's good that you know what Groucho sounds like now, because when you get to Young Frankenstein you will be able to recognize when someone does an impression of him. Kitty Carlisle was a panelist on the TV show To Tell The Truth for years.

Fun fact: This was the first film the Brothers made at MGM after leaving Paramount. Some MGM exec loved them and insisted the studio offer them a contract, the only issue was he never liked the fact that in their previous films they never helped anyone and were only out for themselves so from here on out their movies always involved a plot where they helped the supporting characters, usually some couple that were in love. But since being con-artists was part of their schtick, they continued to do that and just happened to help the young couple in love as a byproduct.
Harpo played the... (Harp)) and Chico played the piano, in real life, that was them really playing their instruments. All of them were really talented guys.
Elton John got to know Groucho in the early 70's and during one visit, Groucho had him laughing so hard, he blurted out, "Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player." That subsequently became the name of Elton's next album.
The Marx Brothers started on stage. Their first two films, The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers, began as plays and were eventually filmed; for later films they wrote scenes they could rehearse in front of an audience to see what worked (and to ad-lib the hell out of every line). So they were chaos, but organized chaos. Somehow.

Horse Feathers and Duck Soup are well worth reviewing! Thank you for reviewing some Marx Bros! Night at the Opera, the new studio tried to impose more of a plot. The earlier ones are pure, glorious anarchy! Love this one as well.
I used to watch these movies as a kid in the 70's. They actually were shown on TV when there was only 13 channels. I used to watch it with my brothers and sisters, just rolling with laughter. This is pure gold!
The Marx's were kids when they went on the vaudeville stage, Groucho often played a teacher or an older character in the act using a grease paint mustache. Harpo could speak, but he had a thick Platter-dutch/Yiddish accent which didnt work so well in small towns in the Midwest (he was also not as fast as Groucho or Chico so he eventually just depended on sight gags for his comedy. Groucho wears glasses, has the big, black mustache, and spouts wisecracks and insults. Chico wears the peasant cap, plays piano, and speaks with an Italian accent. And Harpo has curly blond hair, doesn't speak, and plays the harp. In some of their movies, the 4th brother Zeppo appears as the straight man.
There were 4 brothers who went into the movie business, but zoo, who didn’t have any outstanding characteristics left the group after a few films, leaving the trio. They were actual brothers from New York, and lived down the block from Houdini. This may be their best movie, but a Day at the Races is a cle second

The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Charlie Chaplin, and Buster Keaton were the original funny men of comedy, from the first silent films well into the talkies. Sadly we'll never see another era like that again. It's great to see someone explore historical comedy and enjoy it, which proves how timeless it is. There's a fourth brother that played in a couple of the films, his name was Zeppo, he'd usually play the straight guy, which balanced well with his brother's comedy routines. Harpoon never spoke in the movies, but he did in regular life. As far as the grease paint mustache on Groucho, there's an interesting story about that. Harpoon and Chico really were talented musicians and were amazing to watch. I'm glad you got to experience them. Horsefeathers!! I had a poster of these guys on my wall growing up...there were 4 of them on my poster. Harpo, Groucho,Chico, and Zeppo. They were really talented musicians. Horsefeathers was one I'll always remember... but Animal Crackers was good too.
One thing Irving Thalberg did was "road test" the films--preview them before actual audiences before official release to see what worked, and what didn't.
Kitty Carlisle who played the young singer was on a lot of television and was a major star of broadway for many years. The Marx brothers Groucho, Chico, Harpo and Zeppo who was not in this picture.
Great reaction to this timeless classic. The best of the rest are the Paramount comedies they did before this one, in which their brother Zeppo was the fourth member of the group.
Before Monty Python. There was The Marx Brothers. Groucho, The wise cracker. Was late for a show. He had no time for makeup. So he put on black grease for eyebrows and a mustache. Which became his trademark. Chico..... They called him Chicko ( He was a ladies man ). An Italian accented brother of a Jewish family. A lot of deadpan humor and was a excellent Piano player. Harpo, The silent brother. Slapstick was his specialty. He could speak. His constant shenanigans and absurdities. Made him one of the favorites of the brothers. Also a excellent and World renowned Harpest. Zeppo, A brother known for for the early day of their Motion picture days. He played the love interest and sing. The Marx Brothers started the movies with Paramount. Then Went to MGM. Zeppo did not follow the group to MGM. Mostly because he wanted to have a funny part. He was usually the Strait man. What a special experience it was to watch you discover these guys! And when you were getting emotional watching Harpo play, I always get emotional when I see Chico or Harpo play. Every New Year’s Day there is a Marx Brothers Marathon at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There’s nothing like watching The Marx Brothers in a full theatre especially “A Night At The Opera”. You would absolutely love it.
Harpo Marx gets his name from being able to play the Harp. He and his brother actually do play the Harp and the piano. They have a fourth brother named Zeppo who appears in some of the movies and he is the more normal Marx. Now as for Harpo. He could actually talk but in all the movies and any appearances he made, he stayed in character. He only did one movie with a speaking role but it was a silent film. Harpo’s most famous scene is the mirror scene. You just have to see it.

The Marx Brothers were pure comedic anarchy. They were famous on the Vaudeville circuit where they would leave the stages and theaters in shambles after they were done with a show. A perfect mix of both physical and verbal slapstick. The crazy wordplay, especially by Groucho, and the wild physicality is brilliant. The're just relentless and hilarious!
I believe their earlier films were originally skits ( shows ) they did on Vaudville, and often in early days they would film during the day, and do live shows at night.
I myself was more of a fan of Marx Brothers more than I ever was about "Three Stooges".
@peterbroad6885 The Marx's first films were adapted from thier Broadway shows. After the 5th "Duck Soup" , Zeppo left the act. Chico made a deal with MGM producer Thalberg, who knew how to make the Marx movies more successful. 1st was "Night at Opera" 2nd was "Day at Races" , but Thalberg died during production. However, the wisdom of 'the Thalberg formula' was employed in all subsequent movies by the Marx Bros

The Marx Brothers were comedic geniuses, and A Night at the Opera is my favorite of their films. Duck Soup and A Day at the Races are also brilliant. In some of their earlier films, their other brother, Zeppo, also appeared. He always played the handsome straight man.

There's a scene in _Animal Crackers_ that takes place in the dark. During that scene Zeppo filled in for Groucho, who was unavailable that day.

There were actually 5 Marx brothers. Gummo was part of the act when they were in Vaudeville, but he left to fight in WW1 (the war ended before he was deployed). He did not rejoin his brothers and was replaced by the youngest brother, Zeppo who would play the straight man and romantic lead. This was the first film that he did not appear in.
Didn't Gummo invent a bomb-release mechanism of some kind for warplanes?
Little known fact: There were actually six Marx brothers. Manfred was the first born, but died before Chico was born.

Harpo playing the harp always makes me a little emotional, he's so great at being funny and silly but there's this seriousness that comes out when he plays, like he's doing the thing he loves the most, you can feel the love in his playing.

I grew up watching Marx Bros movies and their humor never ages. Pure gold from start to finish. Also, kudos to Dumont, who plays Mrs Claypool in this one. She’s the ever present straight woman and butt of Groucho’s gags, but was loved by all and had her own immaculate timing.

Groucho's mustache and eyebrows were actually greasepaint. Each brothers were accomplished musicians. Especially Harpo (harp) and Chico (piano) and would play those instruments in each movie.

Once you finish the movies it's worth it to watch Groucho Marx's game show from the 50s "You Bet Your Life". On live TV his wit is just as sharp. Probably want to do a "best of". It's hit or miss depending on the guests.
I agree!!! I used to watch "You Bet You Life" when growing up when it was first on TV and then it was in reruns where I lived, in the '80s when my children were small. I would LOVE to watch that program again. I wasn't aware that there are some here on You Tube, I will have to check that out,

This film and Duck Soup have been my all-time favorites since I was 10 years old. This movie was also the reason why I went to see Il Trovatore (without battleships, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, or other mishaps) at the Metropolitan Opera. I am now a fully-certified opera nerd. One love has lead to another.
For my 40th I received a full set of every Marx Brothers' movies - and I love every one - I'd say this and A Day At The Races are my favourites. Queen named two of their albums after them. :)

Later in life Kitty Carlyle was a regular panelist on TV's "To Tell the Truth"... She was married to playright Moss Hart.
I'm a big fan of their "Monkey Business". A lot of shipboard shenanigans in that film, too. And Zeppo gets to play the romantic lead.

Highly recommend Harold Lloyd's Safety Last, it's a silent film, very funny. The whole film is s buildup to the most amazing stunt sequence ever filmed,, no CGI, no special effects, no green screen, all the stunts at height with no Safety wires, and only a painter's platform, with a tiny mattress, 16 ft below him, and if he fell he would have been killed.
Wow. This is an unexpected, and also daring, reaction. Don't think I've ever seen anyone react to the Marx Brothers before. Personally, I think they are absolutely brilliant. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Kitty Carlisle was a very good singer and a patron of the opera (and the arts in general). She later married the well-known playwrite, Moss Hart (who often co-wrote with another famous playwrite, George S. Kaufman). She was very famous to American audiences in the '50s and '60s as a panelist on popular TV game shows, like To Tell The Truth, What's My Line and I've Got A Secret, among others.
I've seen all the Marx Brothers movies years ago, but watching them with Dawn is a fresh pleasure. This woman can laugh.
Just a couple comments. The pretty lady playing Rosa was Kitty Carlisle, who years later was a mainstay on 50s tv game shows, esp. To Tell the Truth. She was a passionate crusader for support of the Arts, becoming an elegant Society lady, and received several national arts recognitions as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The scene of chaos in their small ship room is considered one of the classics of early Hollywood comedies. So, sooo, funny !!!
That's great reacting Dawn! You'll have to get a Groucho pair of glasses with the nose, eyebrows and mustache. Unfortunately as they moved into the 1940s they were forced by circumstances to do a lot of inferior films. Chico was an addicted gambler and needed quick money. They lost their best writers. But there are still some classic gags and especially Groucho songs, like "Lydia, the tattooed lady".

My dad introduced me to the the Marx Brothers long ago...he gloried in telling tells of heading to Minneapolis to see them live. My mother, of course, thought they were a bit on the crude side. It was so much fun to see your reactions. Their comedy is timeless, like all great comedieans.
My favorite line "I saw Mrs. Claypool first... well, her mother saw her first, but there's no point in bringing the Civil War into this"! Making fun of someone being around during the Civil War era would have been a great joke in the 1930s. lol

After having watched this film so many times, the next best thing is watching it through the eyes of someone who hasn't seen it but really gets how good they were. They were truly unique.

the scene with Harpo playing the harp....one of the greatest scenes in all of hollywood. he absolutely cast a spell on the extras, no acting, just plain emotional response to a musical performance. and 89 years later, Harpo captivated you too. btw, Chico is pronounced chick - o, not like the spanish chee - ko.
The Marx Brothers were an American classic. These brothers were in the business early on and were huge. Still are!!!! Many one-liners & a super fast delivery. Masters of slap-stick.. You have to pay attention or you miss out. Funny!!!!!!!!!!!
Meant to add to my original comment, the actress who played the rich Mrs. Claypool - Margaret Dumont - was the regular butt of Groucho's jokes in many of their best movies. In real life she was a wonderfully warm and loving person, and all the Marx brothers adored her. She bore the brunt of Groucho's barbs such grace and self-deprecation off set. Also, the megaband Queen were such fans of the Marx Brothers that they named two of their most successful albums, "A Night at the Opera" and "A Day at the Races".
Loved this movie as a kid. No idea if it holds up but I like groucho Marx so I expect it should. About to watch your reaction now.

When the Marx Brothers were in vaudeville, Groucho would use a false mustache in their routines. He would often go out between shows. One day, he was late getting back to the theater, and didn't have time to put on the regular mustache, so he grabbed some black shoe polish. That worked so well that it retained it for the rest of his career, though in later life he grew a real one.
The Marx Brothers were Jewish. Harpo (real name Adolph, later Arthur) was supposed to play Irish characters in their vaudeville acts, but he could never get rid of his thick Jewish accent, so they made the character silent, and physical comedy became his trademark.
Kitty Carlisle (Rosa) and Allan Jones (Ricardo) were both trained opera singers, but made their careers in movies and television. Ms. Carlisle became a fixture on every iteration of the game show 'To Tell the Truth' from the 1950s to the 1970s. A theater at the Performing Center of the Arts in Albany, NY (commonly known as The Egg) is named for her.
When the brothers were growing up, the family only had enough money for one of them to take piano lessons. (This was a time when a loaf of bread cost five cents, and piano lessons were 25 cents an hour.) Leonard/Chico, being the oldest, was chosen to get the lessons, but Harpo paid attention and learned as well. He later taught himself to play the harp, hence his nickname. (No matter how much he clowns around, once he sits down to play, he's all business.) Chico developed his own style of playing the piano, including the 'pistol shot' technique demonstrated at 13:35.
The Brothers' first movie was 'The Coconuts'. Like their second film, 'Animal Crackers', it was based on a play they were doing on Broadway.

Groucho hosted his own game show in the 1950s - 'You Bet Your Life'. One of the funniest bits was when Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez played. Pedro went on to appear in many Westerns. TH-cam has his episode. Funny stuff. Groucho was 2nd fiddle this time.

I love the scene when all these people keep coming into their "room" uh closet (LOL) until it's jammed full of people and the another person opens the door and they ALL spill out into the hallway....that is SO FUNNY!! I was looking forward to you showing it here, but you CUt it!! Aaaaaarrrgghhhh!! LOL! This is my favorite Marx Brothers movie followed my Duck Soup, and A Day at the Races. I have been watching Marx Brothers movies since I was a child in the '50s, their movies were shown on TV on Saturday afternoons back then. SO nice to see a young woman reacting and laughing so heartedly to them. I only saw one other reactor who watched one of their movies, and he just DIDN'T "get" their humor AT ALL! He didn't laugh at ANYTHING. No matter how many times I have watched their movies over the years, they STILL make me laugh. (by the way, GROUCHO'S moustache and eyebrows are PAINTED on, it almost looks like black shoe polish. Dawn Marie: you reacted to this movie exactly how I did lo those many years ago. My chosen careers as editor, typesetter/typographer, and librarian were stimulated by watching "A Night at the Opera." Eventually I watched most of the Marx Brothers movies and reveled in their hilarity and especially the WORD PLAY and visual jokes. You are the perfect foil for the antics of these comic geniuses. The duplicates (5 kids up in Canada) gag (at 7:00) refers to the Dionne quintuplets born in 1934. It was huge news at the time and considered a medical marvel.
"Monkey Business" is another great one, and it's the only of their movies where Zeppo has a major part.
Want to give a hat tip to the late great Margaret Dumont, who was great as the lady who delivers straight lines like a pro. She's in a bunch of Marx Brothers movies. In interviews, she admitted she wanted to laugh, but couldn't, since that would break character. She's now famous for keeping a straight face in the face of silliness.
The Marx Brothers were commedic geniuses. If you ever want to hear the story of their work read the Autobiography Harop Speaks. He tells of how his brothers grew up raised by their mother, started in Vaudville, and graduated to the silver screen. They were a riot, and always on too. They had to be locked in their dressing rooms between takes just so they wouldn't wander off and get into all sorts of mischief. And on stage they were just as hilarious. The film crew often were cracking up over their jokes making it hard to work. The director had to seal himself in a sound-proof booth between takes just so he wouldn't be in hysterics during the shoot.
But the Marx Brothers were also quite generous and helpful. During the time of The Great Depression their films were some of the few that could still turn a proifit. And they insisted on some large musical numbers like the one seen here just so that every extra on screen could get an easy paycheck.

After watching you watch this, it makes me somewhat envious threat you are watching these for the first time. I remember watching so many good movies for the first time and how I felt. Don't feel like you have missed out on anything. You're watching them now and each one is a new discovery for you, and that's the best. If you ever get a chance, if your local theater plays old movies, go see them there. Having them all at your finger tips at home is convenient, but seeing them in the theater on the big screen is the way to see them. Also, it's always great when Chico and Harpo play. There was also Zeppo Marx, a relatively straight man who performed with the main three for a while. And, there was Gummo, who never was with the guys once they made it big. He was with them in vaudeville.

While still performing on the stage Groucho wore a fake moustash and one night he was late to the theater and he didn't have time to apply the spirit gum and moustash so he dipped his finger in some grease paint and rubbed it on his upper lip. Every one liked it so that became his signature. 👋

Fun fact: This was the first film the Brothers made at MGM after leaving Paramount. Some MGM exec loved them and insisted the studio offer them a contract, the only issue was he never liked the fact that in their previous films they never helped anyone and were only out for themselves so from here on out their movies always involved a plot where they helped the supporting characters, usually some couple that were in love. But since being con-artists was part of their schtick, they continued to do that and just happened to help the young couple in love as a byproduct.
Harpo played the... (Harp)) and Chico played the piano, in real life, that was them really playing their instruments. All of them were really talented guys.
Elton John got to know Groucho in the early 70's and during one visit, Groucho had him laughing so hard, he blurted out, "Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player." That subsequently became the name of Elton's next album.

The Marx Brothers started on stage. Their first two films, The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers, began as plays and were eventually filmed; for later films they wrote scenes they could rehearse in front of an audience to see what worked (and to ad-lib the hell out of every line). So they were chaos, but organized chaos. Somehow.
Kitty Carlisle used to be on game shows when I was a kid. She is fantastic in this movie. She's pretty and has a great voice.

I used to watch these movies as a kid in the 70's. They actually were shown on TV when there was only 13 channels. I used to watch it with my brothers and sisters, just rolling with laughter. This is pure gold!

Harpo could speak, but he had a thick Platter-dutch/Yiddish accent which didnt work so well in small towns in the Midwest (he was also not as fast as Groucho or Chico so he eventually just depended on sight gags for his comedy. The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Charlie Chaplin, and Buster Keaton were the original funny men of comedy, from the first silent films well into the talkies. Sadly we'll never see another era like that again. It's great to see someone explore historical comedy and enjoy it, which proves how timeless it is. There's a fourth brother that played in a couple of the films, his name was Zeppo, he'd usually play the straight guy, which balanced well with his brother's comedy routines. Harpoon never spoke in the movies, but he did in regular life. As far as the grease paint mustache on Groucho, there's an interesting story about that. Harpoon and Chico really were talented musicians and were amazing to watch. I'm glad you got to experience them. Horsefeathers!! I had a poster of these guys on my wall growing up...there were 4 of them on my poster. Harpo, Groucho,Chico, and Zeppo. They were really talented musicians. Horsefeathers was one I'll always remember... but Animal Crackers was good too.
One thing Irving Thalberg did was "road test" the films--preview them before actual audiences before official release to see what worked, and what didn't.

Harpo, The silent brother. Slapstick was his specialty. He could speak. His constant shenanigans and absurdities. Made him one of the favorites of the brothers. Also a excellent and World renowned Harpest.
Zeppo, A brother known for for the early day of their Motion picture days. He played the love interest and sing. The Marx Brothers started the movies with Paramount. Then Went to MGM. Zeppo did not follow the group to MGM. Mostly because he wanted to have a funny part. He was usually the Strait man.

What a special experience it was to watch you discover these guys! And when you were getting emotional watching Harpo play, I always get emotional when I see Chico or Harpo play. I love the way Chico plays piano.

I LOVE the Marx Brothers.........and your reaction to seeing their lunacy for the first time was simply brilliant! I thoroughly enjoyed your enjoyment, and seeing you discover the Marx Brothers was marvellous! You really do have to watch Duck Soup, A Day at the Races, and Horse Feathers, to name but a few, you'll love them!............Groucho Marx has to be the funniest man I've ever seen in movies........

Every New Year’s Day there is a Marx Brothers Marathon at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There’s nothing like watching The Marx Brothers in a full theatre especially “A Night At The Opera”.

Harpo Marx gets his name from being able to play the Harp. He and his brother actually do play the Harp and the piano. They have a fourth brother named Zeppo who appears in some of the movies and he is the more normal Marx. Now as for Harpo. He could actually talk but in all the movies and any appearances he made, he stayed in character. He only did one movie with a speaking role but it was a silent film. Harpo’s most famous scene is the mirror scene. You just have to see it.
