    I didn’t realize what silken tofu was until Andrew finished making it. It’s actually one of the main ingredients of a street-food dessert (i think) here in the Philippines. It’s called Taho. So if you add tapioca pearls and brown sugar syrup to the silken tofu, then you have Taho.

    • @recoil53
      @recoil53 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      That's very close to what you get in Southern China. It's cool, some minced ginger is added along with some brown sugar.
      Although I haven't been back in decades and they probably add boba now.

      And yes... In Indonesia Tahu means Tofu, so frickin similar with Tagalog

      We got that too in Malaysia, we call it taufu fa. Usually served with palm sugar syrup or sometime just plain sugar syrup, I prefer the first one because the caramel flavour is much more concentrated. And the idea of eating taho with tapioca pearls sure sounds like a fun experience.i want to tried it someday

    • @A_T216
      @A_T216 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dunno if you're still stumped for miso uses, but there's miso broth you can make (obviously) and that in itself is very versatile. It can become, in combination with other stuff, very complex soup flavours. You can make miso sauce by adding some vinegar, a bit of soy sauce, and any other flavouring you like (e.g. honey, chili flakes, onion...). This sauce can be used for dipping (though make it runny) or for mixing into a noodle dish or something. Miso peanut butter cookies are quite good, as well. Japanese Cooking 101 (a channel on TH-cam) has a good miso eggplant recipe.

    homemade tofu is one of the best things ever. I even bought a soymilk maker to help me make it, but now I'm also hooked on homemade soymilk -- hot, in a bowl, with Chinese black vinegar to curdle it a bit, homemade chili oil, ground sesame seed and green onion. with some youtiao (savory Chinese donut sticks, which I also make), it's possibly the best breakfast ever. I highly recommend getting a soymilk maker if you like fresh tofu (I have a Joyoung, but there are lots of brands that are also good). you'll never buy soymilk again.

    • @shelby6278
      @shelby6278 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I couldn't stop thinking about how I would LOVE to have Andrew's dish for breakfast. Instantly went to googling to see if there is a prepared version that can be purchased, which obviously wouldn't stand up to homemade but would hopefully still satisfy the craving? Remains unclear. Glad to see your comment offering advice on how to look into preparing it as well!

    • @DianeH2038
      @DianeH2038 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shelby6278 you want to look for douhua (tofu flower) in a traditional Chinese neighborhood, if you can find it, or a douhua recipe (just make a savory version w/o a sugar syrup -- though the sweet version is amazing as well) or a silken tofu recipe (I prefer gypsum or GDL as a coagulant for silken tofu, but nigari is good also -- you just have to keep the stirring to a minimum when adding the coagulant). the slightly curdled soymilk I mentioned is more of a Shanghainese dish -- you can find a recipe for it on Woks of Life if you search for savory soy milk soup there (they have a legit recipe for youtiao, too).

    Alvin's Tofu looks really appetizing, Rie's tofu looks like something you order at a Michelin restaurant, Inga's tofu looks addictive to eat. Andre's tofu is the kind of meal where you question at first and wonder if it tastes good or not.

    • @PDVstr1ker
      @PDVstr1ker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mapo Tofu is quite addictive, since the entire meal combines well. The aromas (sesame oil, ginger, garlic) and spiciness (spicies and tobanjan), with meaty texture of tofu and beef (or pork) flavor, topping a great bowl of white rice. Believe, it's worth trying at least once in life.

    I love when they give their personal notes of things cause i adjust or accommodate most recipes to my liking. Even if its as small as adding a little more lemon.

    They don't try too hard to integrate and learning various cultures. Always love seeing all of them just listening and supporting each other, no one overtalks each other. They also empower their suppliers and give credit when it's due to those who have or inspired the recipes.

    I also made a cheesecake tart a few years ago with a NY cheesecake recipe and replaced the lemon with lime. I didn't have another pan at the time. :) It was really nice and you didn't feel overwhelmed by a giant slice. The ratio of crumb to filling was also nice.
    I love how excited, supportive and encouraging you are for each other, everybody likes to learn from one another. ❤❤❤

    *이 음식은 정말 건강하고 맛있어보이네요. 맨 마지막에 참기름 몇방울 떨어뜨려주면 정말 완벽한 한끼 식사가 될것같아요. 모두들 맛있게 드시고 건강하시길 바래요.This food looks really healthy and delicious. A few drops of sesame oil at the end will make a perfect meal. I hope you all eat deliciously and stay healthy.*

    11:30 Mortar and pestle is called cobek and ulekan here in Indonesia. In my region it's made of a slab of stone. It's so heavy. The pestle looks like a horse leg 🤣 It's not straight up and down but more horizontal and slanted downward at the end, hence the horse leg comparison.

    This seems like it'd be such a fun thing to do with friends! Just getting together and sharing recipes using a common ingredient. Ingredients that might push us to try new recipes and techniques and learn from each other. I just wish I had three other friends who loved to cook too!
