  • Hey Everyone!
Today I bring to you a very special recipe of the Goan sweet jeera buns. Almost every Sunday my Dad would get these sweet jeera buns along with patal bhaji or sukhi bhaji first thing after mass from a restaurant in our marketplace. Sweet buns were however the best part of my morning breakfast.
ON a different note, I would like to clarify that this is a Goan recipe. The ones that include bananas (although they taste yummy) are not Goan. They are Manglorean.
This is a crisp bun on the outside with a soft and almost breadlike texture inside.
Once you knead the dough you could rest it to prove for 5 - 6 hours but I leave mine overnight for best results.
If the dough doesn't form add a little more yogurt or water to it. It depends on the consistency of the yogurt. I didn't add any water to mine.
This dough is quite elastic so it keeps springing back together as you roll. It's fine!
This recipe makes about 10 buns
To make the Sweet Jeera Buns you'll need:
    2 Cups Plain Flour/ Maida
1/4 tsp Baking Soda / Bicarb of Soda
    1/2 tsp Salt
    1/2 tsp Whole Cumin
    1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
    2 1/2 Tbsps Sugar
    3/4 Cup Yogurt / Curd
    Oil for deep frying

    Can we use wheat flour?

Hi Pooja, thank you for commenting. Although it is possible to make these buns using wheat flour, goans traditionally make them using ap flour. You may try it with wheat flour too.

Thanks for the recipe. They turned out perfect. My kids requested it one evening and I could only manage to rest the batter for 2hrs. I made small 5cm dia buns but they were very nice. A 6hr resting time would have made them perfect.
