MinnMax 24:36 & 25:52 You mean like Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam 2? It was gonna have the Koopalings teamup with their Paper Counterparts... th-cam.com/video/ANMpOHLy4Dk/w-d-xo.html & chng.it/mXPQbrpN7X
It was my gateway into RPGs and the first for me to spend hours staying up til like 3 or 4 in the morning playing this. Hence why this is my first RPG retrospective I am working on
@@minnmax Interviews with Videogame developers IN GENERAL are somewhat rare. Japanese dev interviews are basically impossible to find. Thank you guys for your amazing work :)
This is a rather fascinating interview on Fujioka's career, and the fact that the one project he would like to work on (before he retires) is a direct sequel to Super Mario RPG.
I've noticed three things within the first few minutes: you are extremely confident, kind, and thoughtful as an interviewer. Definitely subscribing, well done all around! Hopefully this video goes viral, for both the sake of lifting this channel even further, and showing Nintendo that there's still an interest in a sequel to Mario RPG, especially with Fujioka as director
Great interview Ben! As a Mandarin interpreter, I'm in awe of the Japanese interpreter you arranged for this! Using words like "cohort" so fluidly while also doing a great job of speaking in a way that holds your attention rather than being monotone. Great job all around! Also happy to see you guys mentioned on IGN and elsewhere for this story
So awesome we got another Nintendo related Interview. If MinnMax was able to score a Reggie interview damn that would be wild plus he got a book coming out soon too. But the editing on this is amazing, I can't remember if the editing on the Chrono Trigger interview was as good but I wanna say it was; so good job on the person doing these edits. Edit: He said he wants to do another Super Mario RPG as his final game and he got a story going. I'm assuming he already got every detail of the game in ink already and that has me hype. If he don't get to make the game hopefully a book or art work comes out of it then and it's not lost to time sitting on his desk.
I thought it would be rough having to break it to Fujioka-san that Geno didn't make it to smash, but he seemed to take it well. Thanks for the fun interview. Tomato Adventure really changes a man, huh
Since Mario and Luigi and Mario RPG were made by the same team mostly (Same director, composer, writers mostly, etc) it would be neat to include some connections to both, like Starlow and Geno with both being star spirits/sprites. A Geno cameo in Superstar Saga isn't enough
We want Geno and Mallow return to Mario in Limelight, and also we see Smash 6 announcement when Next Gen Nintendo Console and adding Geno as the Final Base Roster. That why I was great ideas thinking of it.
This is so awesome. Would kill to see a Mario RPG 2. LotSS is easily one of my all-time favorite titles. I’d hope to god that Geno would return in some fashion.
I didn’t see this interview when it came out but it was in my feed after the RPG remake was announced, but watching this now and hearing Fujioka wants to make one more Mario RPG fills my heart with hope. But just getting a remake fulfilled a dream of mine I didn’t know I wanted so I don’t know if even Star Road will fulfill my dream for a sequel but one can try! 😂
This blindsided me in the best way possible. I love SMRPG and I love the Mario and Luigi games. Very nice to see a long-form interview with one of the guys behind it all. Lots of admiration for Mr. Fujioka. Truly hope he gets his wish and is a lead on SMRPG 2 at some point!
He does it again! What a wonderful interview. You guys channeled pure joy into this video. Amazing comments section too. So many positive and happy viewers. Mario RPG 2 would be epic.
I would love a super mario rpg 2 for the switch it would be amazing. Right now mario needs a rpg since alphadream is bankrupt and paper mario isn't going back to its roots. We still have the rabbids but still. Nintendo needs a proper mario rpg
Late on this one, but this is great! Gosh between this and the Fez/Tunic interview I have just been looking forward to every interview! Thank you for doing these!
Love the interview and watching these types of videos while I work is the best when I want to take a break from listening to music while working. Thank you so much for making this video and I can't wait for the next one. I hope you get to interview Masahiro Sakurai.
I'd like for both Geno and Mallow to be in Smash. Even though Mallow isn't as popular as Geno, he's like Mario's first and best friend in the game. But I see potential in his weather controlling abilities to fight, also his arms are like Dalhsim in Street Fighter. Just why not? What I wanted to find out from him is how come that property is beyond Nintendo's reach to use the mario rpg characters? Nintendo should just buy it off of Square and then expand with those characters. They honestly belong in the mario universe; Mallow, Geno, Booster and his Snifits, Johnny and his bandana gangs and the Smithy gang.
6:13 Just for reference, the event Fujioka is referring to is the Japanese V-Jump Festival that took place late summer of 1995. You can catch a clip of him and Miyamoto presenting the game here, complete with subtitles: th-cam.com/video/E2rVWOhDZRU/w-d-xo.html
This must be also the point he made about "controlling only mario", more set pieces where you can interact directly like an action game. Nippon Ichi Software has done great work integrating RPG and action elements, and they might be somewhat approachable for interviews too, if there's curiosity about what kind of games they are making.
Ben, you should spinoff these interviews under another banner to get those sweet sweet SEO clicks my friend. This interview was too good and you deserve more views/likes
Oh hey, has "MinnMax, two ns" been upgraded to "MinnMax, two ns, in honor of Minnesota" now? I think I noticed Ben say it that way on the podcast but now it seems like he's sticking with that. Maybe because a lot of people weren't making the Minn = Minnesota connection?
@@MrArijo The 'and' is separating topics here, as in the interview is about Mario RPGs AND Director Chihiro Fujioka's life in games ( like his career in the industry and maybe his upbringing around them, I haven't finished the interview yet.)

Super Mario RPG is still my no. 1 most favorite Mario game, seeing a sequel or even a remake could be amazing

We're very close
We don't get nearly enough interviews like these with Japanese devs in western media, thank you for this !
Thank you so much for watching, we agree! We hope fans find it.
@@minnmax Interviews with Videogame developers IN GENERAL are somewhat rare. Japanese dev interviews are basically impossible to find. Thank you guys for your amazing work :)
Please interview him again since Mario RPG is getting a remake!!!
Idk what I'd do if SMRPG 2 (No, not Paper Mario) got announced. I'd probably implode
This is a rather fascinating interview on Fujioka's career, and the fact that the one project he would like to work on (before he retires) is a direct sequel to Super Mario RPG.
Hope that happens. Though, Nintendo seem to be so anti "good Mario RPGs", something that the Paper Mario series has inclined as of late.
Geno and Mallow returning needs to happen so badly
Mario & Luigi still is one of my favorite series of all time, it introduced me to RPGs in general. They'll always have a special place in my heart
the translator adding laughter is weirdly so effective. love hearing bits of Japanese as well
Give this man a sequel! Super Mario RPG is an absolute masterpiece
You're a legend for this, Ben. Always appreciate when you're able to get developers (new or old school) on for an interview!
Thanks so much, Grant! Any help sharing the interview online is appreciated.
Superbly edited to make a translated interview enjoyable! Kudos to whoever worked on that!
The content of the interview was also excellent! ;)
Translator did a great job too. I mean I can't verify the translation but he sounded very natural in the responses

We've tried to reach out! Yeah, obviously we would loooove to talk to Reggie.
@@minnmax Oh of course! A journalist in the gaming industry had to be crazy to pass that up.

Really cool how you get to do in depth interviews with Japanese creators outside of press for games Ben
Thanks, we try! Any help spreading the word is appreciated.
Can I cite this interview for my Mario RPG Retrospective? As a courtesy. Thank you for putting together this interview...
Sure thing, thanks for watching.
this is the most seamless dubbed interview of all time by my understanding

Hey, as long as we have Patreon supporters we'll have interviews!
Wonderful interview overall!
Also loved the bit about his thoughts on Paper Mario, I always wondered how they viewed that series.
This is the kind of content I support MinnMax for!
I hope we get a new true Mario RPG on the Switch. It’s my favorite series and I would love to hear more Yoko Shimomura Mario music.
This is big! Congrats Ben and the CLCs!
Thanks for this interview! Really impressive.
Sorry, he's in a band with Nobuo Uematsu? That's amazing!

Love the dub option on this. Would you ever go back to older interviews with foreign language folks and do dub overs?
This is such a fantastic interview.
I hope there is a sequel to Super Mario RPG! I love the Paper Mario series.

There needs to be a Mario rpg 2
I have been interested in Tomato Adventure / Gimmick Land stuff recently
