Hey Ken, nice review to a snooze fest movie & Arrow Video, never has Dolby Atmos & no blu ray version with their 4k uhd😖 Why not at $45.00??? It's not having a beautiful 4k picture quality, it's the quality of a great rewatchable movie 🎥1984 "Dune" is a forgettable & one time watch movie, just my opinion buddy 🍻
I don't know, I definitely plan on rewatching Vinnie.
The commentary the movie was supposed to be 4 hours but they cut out for 2 hours 17 minutes part of reason it failed they cut so much out it disappointed
I actually really like this move. But more as atmosphere. All the whispering of the word “spice” just makes a nice tone. When I watch it, I often set it as a background movie.
Also, fully agree with you on the packaging. I loooove the look!

FYI George Lucas chose David Lynch to direct Return/Revenge of the Jedi (which he turned down), so that may have influenced why they chose Lynch to direct Dune.

It’s MADSEN not Madison. Also lynch literally uses his own dreams as parts of his movies. The elephant man is a pretty straightforward movie. You should like. It’s an absolute masterpiece. If you aren’t liking lynch mulholland dr is gonna really put you off (maybe not). Naomi Watts is at her career best in it. Twin peaks?!

When I first watched it, I thought it was okay. Then, I read the book (in only 6 days btw) and rewatched it. It is near flawless.
Their is an official DVD steelbook released years ago that has the theatrical version and the extended edition, though lynch notoriously rejected the extended version because the studio did that without his involvement hince him taking his name out of the credits, and it’s a flipper disc with one version on each side (it’s out of print last I checked was only going for about $30)

All I can say is it looks great and is an awesome Collector's item that would look good on anyone's shelf. The movie I don't know though. Lol
David lynch doesn’t even like this movie. I am a David Lynch fan and buy almost all of arrows 4k releases and idk about this one either

@@Whisky_4_1 I’ve only watched this once… I can’t really see much value in it beyond some of the practical effects and costume designs. The issues with it aren’t that David lynch isn’t everybody’s cup of tea. Just saying even if you love David lynch it’s not more enjoyable. It possibly more difficult to watch. I already own the studio canal elephant man 4k. Criterion’s mulholland dr 4k on preorder. If arrow puts out a standard edition and it goes way on sale I might give this another chance bc I WANT it to be good…

Packaging is the only selling point here, unless youre a huge dune fan like me, Wait for the 3 disc steelbook w the extended alan smithee cut.
Edit: I must have read wrong, none of the new releases include the extended cut. Kinda bummed since its only on dvd.

I’ve wanted to watch this film for the longest time but the reviews have always made me hesitant. Lynch is definitely an acquired taste. It’s a gorgeous box set but I don’t know if I can justify that $42 price tag! Great Video Ken!

David Lynch is definitely an acquired taste. I’m not a huge fan myself although I’ve come to appreciate his work. Imo his movies are not about narrative logic, their emotional art films. It’s like looking at an abstract painting. He’s trying to draw out a feeling. They all tend to feel like dreams because nothing is literal.
And all that makes sense when you watch his work. I know what he's going for, but the style just doesn't do it for me. Still gotta see a few more of his films. Thanks for all the thoughtful comments!

Saw the movie once. Got the Universal North American blu ray already. Ordered last week the Arrow Deluxe edition that comes with 3 discs and is in a steelbook. Paid 80 bucks CAD!!! The movie is not a masterpiece but got this exclusively for the Arrow packaging and presentation. Definitely looks cool on the shelve. Check out the deluxe edition!$$

That was a very balanced and thoughtful review. Still, as much as I love David Lynch's best movies, I'll pass on this one.

Arrow didn't do the transfer for this. It's a transfer they've borrowed from Koch Media in Germany, who are releasing it there along with the new documentary which Arrow cancelled for this set.
Ohhh I didn't know that. Thanks for enlightening me and I definitely knew about the controversy surrounding the documentary, but forgot all about it before this review. Lol
I agree that the film feels rushed. It's original running time was closer to three hours, but the studio insisted on cutting it, without Lynch, and it created quite a firestorm, back then. Initial reviews ranged from confusion to boredom. Evidently, audiences felt the same way.

The studio took Dune away from Lynch in the edit, and interfered with him on set a lot too. There is a fan edit online that’s 3hrs long which is supposed to be closer to his vision. It’s a better version but still not great tbh

Yeah. I could definitely see a better Director's Cut in there. Still a fine movie though. Didn't love it, but didn't think it was terrible either

I watched a documentary on cgi once and the shield cgi for dune was referenced as cutting edge! ;) things have moved so fast with computers!!
This movie is my favourite movie. I get so absorbed into it and the legendary nature of it all.
It’s funny, when I saw this beautiful set get revealed my instinct was to go hit preorder, but then sanity took over and I remembered watching it in the past 😀. It’s not bad, but it’s also odd for the sake of being odd sometimes and that turns me off. I’d probably look at the bonuses more than the actual movie so I passed on it. I actually prefer the Scifi Channel miniseries to this version. I’m excited for. The new one too. I agree with you on David Lynch for the most part.
And I definitely understand that. No need to own something you're not a huge fan of when there is so many cool things coming to buy!
