Of all Frankie's in front of audience appearances, this that he did towards last years of his life in front of Oxford Union for me is most cherished and just pulls at the heartstrings so much. Cause he is the epitome of a professional comedian class act but in front of a young audience who are interacting with him literally loving the whole routine but beyond that, him as a person. To see the happy faces and smiles in that young crowd that this event was back then adoring him is such a wonderful thing and the volume of cheers when he throws in his famed catchphrases. There is nothing forced from that crowd it is sheer appreciation for a comedian by then been in showbusiness for many decades and he so deserved that love from the Oxford Union. I wish they would repeat this on TV, l literally don't think it has been since.
Barry Cryer said ..’Wherever Frankie Howerd played, there were bums on seats and that was the safest place for them’ Not unkind because Howerd played up his dampness, it was a huge part of his brilliant act and very endearing. A fabulous comic.
Incredible how Frankie Howerd became Britain’s first great radio comedian in the immediate post-war years before anyone had a TV and here he is over 40 years later playing live stand up to students. He never went out of fashion.
The greatest stand up in the English language of all time. He absolutely brought the house down at the Oxford Union. Compare any of the others, any of them and you will see that they didn't get that reaction. RIP Sir Francis of Howerd. We are still laughing after all these years.
Never knighted. In England, if you have true talent, you have to wait until your nearly dead before you’re recognised. Anyway, to those of us who loved him, he was a SIR
He was so nervous that night though followed it through beautifully. He was a comic genius, influenced us all who were fortunate to witness his wit, banter at the time to have a sense of humour and laugh no matter what life throws. RIP Francis, you will alway's be remembered in our hearts forever...
Great respect for Frankie, He was not only a very funny guy but great to talk to. He took the trouble and travelled all the way to Sarawak ( Borneo) to entertain us 1965 . This we have never forgotten
I don’t know if this is true, but the guy who said “hear hear” is, in fact, his partner and business manager Dennis Haymer. The well-timed heckle was, I have heard, part of the act.
Just saying "no" or "no, don't" is enough to make them laugh. Made me laugh too! His brilliance in Up Pompeii was that it looked ad libbed, which was genius whether it was scripted or not,
This man is what everything means.. The time, the place, the mindset, the humour, everything... The late 20th century will be looked upon as the pinnacle of human existence, and Frankie Howard IS the Pinnacle of that. The innocence caught up in knowing.. Just fabulous and will NEVER be repeated. 09/2023
This young crowd at the oxford union certainly appreciated the fact a great comedy legend as sir Frances Howerd came to entertain them.the man himself getting into his stride as he felt at ease making that connection.as a show which was done in his later years frankie still hit the tittering spot.smashing fella and delivery second to none.RIP sir youll always have us in fits of laughter 😂❤
I wish somebody had this and the two season of Up Pompeii on BitTorrent. Can't get these classics over here in the US. If I'd have known that I never would have moved.
I think my Aunt , who was born before 1920 , was quite influenced by him. She had a cracking sense of humour and used to come out with sayings from the music hall days.
The first half hour is on Vimeo, but it’s truly awful. David Walliams did a terrible job. He tried to impersonate Frankie and failed, but also failed to capture the spirit of Frankie.
The creme de la creme of academia being entertained by the great man himself. I was in my early twenties and these scholars would have been the same age as me. Naughty. Twitter ye not!!!
+Calen Green maybe so. i watched the graham norton show not too long ago. it had a famous american actor and 2 british comedians. They were talking and joking a mile a minute. This american actor was totally lost. and he admitted it so...His honesty was refreshing and funny as well...
He went to the states to try his hand on broadway and flopped tremendously. The American audience and critics just didn’t get him, sadly. He had a close brush with Hollywood in the Sgt Pepper movie as Mr Mustard and failed, although that was mainly because the film was awful, with or without Frankie. But he really was fantastic.
I do not wish to upset or belittle anyone but the days of the true naturally funny human has lone gone today as for as im concerned. frankie howard, tommy cooper, benny hill amongst them never realised how they effected peoples lives with their humour and warmth. they were always nervous before a performance in case the public found them unfunny...they could never except any comments about how brilliant they were because they never saw it in themselves....how wrong could they be. my sense of humour must have died because most of todays stand ups and the like try to be funny which just does not work.....they are not funny....they do not make me laugh and to be blunt i find most of them to be embarrising.none of them have a funny bone in their body unlike the pros who we have now sadly lost to never ever be replaced. frankie you will never be replaced.....impossible.....you are sadly missed.
Awwww, at the start, even though hes doing it in joke form, you can tell he doesn't want them to linch him for doing old jokes :( You can tell how nervous he poor guy! :( Absolute Legend in the comedy game. It angers how they are more interesting in talking about his 'flaws' now days rather than his comedy legacy. Same with Tony Hancock, Sid james and Benny hill. Their flaws are nothing compared to celebs (and royals) now -_- We all have flaws even the ones who make those damned documentary's.
Ronnie Corbett famously had a pop at him (to his face). Howard wàs apparently mortified. Until I saw this clip I thought Corbett might be onto something.
these comics are probably in my fathers era and sometimes i wish i was born around that time because this day and age a lot of these young comedians have no catch phrases or ways of approaching the audience. I think that they do also use language and are not quite as funny and have no manners

yeah it would be great on ITV4 or maybe even DAVE

Ken Dodd was the greatest , but Frankie was next !

Arise Sir Francis!
The great man has been gone 31 years ago today x 😢
@@antoniosilvestro9045Which makes me nearly 22!
They are mocking! They are mocking Sir Francis!
Nobody could ever replace the great frankie howerd, totally unique
Fully agree😄
Love the way he sends himself up... another world!

Wonderful stuff. Gentle comedy at its finest.
Frankie was a class act ,look at the age of the audience, and they loved him ,
Yes, the audience would have been about my age, as I was twenty then. Chances are, they are now around the fifty mark (I am now aged 52!)
My god this is so rare. Many thanks for posting.
Great respect for Frankie, He was not only a very funny guy but great to talk to.
He took the trouble and travelled all the way to
Sarawak ( Borneo) to entertain us 1965 .
This we have never forgotten
Frankie "No way at all could you call me an intellectual."
Heckler: " hear, hear"
Best part :-)
nah
I don’t know if this is true, but the guy who said “hear hear” is, in fact, his partner and business manager Dennis Haymer. The well-timed heckle was, I have heard, part of the act.
@@GrilloTheFlightless I was there that night. In my recollection, it was Barry Cryer, who was also in the audience. It was definitely part of the act.
one of the classic comedians of british comedy, sadly missed.
I miss Frankie & many others who we have lost ......thanks for the upload.
Just like that !
Titter ye not!

How lovely it is to see timeless humour...gr8 post...thanx
Timeless. Have loved him since the 1940s. The tale he told of taking an elephant on a London bus has stayed with me since 1948.
Classic, no words except thank you
great just great - Frankie was a first class love him to bits RIP mate I did have this on video but lost it - thanks for posting - Cheers
After fifty years frankie still had it and he still did it better than anyone ..
His talent is timeless
An absolute master of his craft
Total legend .R. I. P. Frankie.
Sad when he passed but what a great exit, selling out shows to a new and young! generation of fans.

Such a quick wit....." and that is why I feel so comfortable here."
Thanks for the vid. It's excellent!
one of the best RIP Frankie
A huge class above the modern comedian of the modern era
So good he was marvelous
Always enjoyed watching him :-)
One of a kind. Great stuff
hes very quick with the comebacks..!
+jessie james - I suppose after 60 years in show business I bet he's heard everything that can be thrown at him!!!!
Absolutely wonderful. Modern comedians, please take note.
Best education they will have ....to see a true pro in action..his art has been .finely honed over years of standup, film and tv 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
'Naturally I thought that was a pub' - (lol)
One of the greats!!! RIP Francis!! 🙏🏻💥🤘🏻

My goodness, didn’t he earn his money that night - genius!
Nothing like Francis nowadays he was a marvel!!👏
the blokes a legend love frankie , av you made a torrent of this for download ,
A legend in his own right.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Genius.
I think my Aunt , who was born before 1920 , was quite influenced by him. She had a cracking sense of humour and used to come out with sayings from the music hall days.
does anyone know where I can watch Frankie Howerd: Rather You Than Me, from the BBC's Legends of Comedy? I've been looking forever.
What are you suggesting you filthy beast!
The first half hour is on Vimeo, but it’s truly awful. David Walliams did a terrible job. He tried to impersonate Frankie and failed, but also failed to capture the spirit of Frankie.
People need to understand the man and his traumatic past. Homophobic comment are distasteful
OH TIITER YE NOT . RIP . FRANKIE
"Oooh she's a bossy boots!"
5:28 Oh No! Oh No Mrs No!
i have the original Clyde,is the piece at the start/end. i will have a check

Titter ye not mrs !..... genius!
Sadly no. After a MAJOR revival in the Eighties, he passed in 1992, aged 75.
I remember hearing about his demise when I was nearly twenty two and the same age as these learned folk!
Ricky Gervais would have made him a megastar 🤩
Brilliant
if this man had gone HOOLYWOOD hewould be a multi millionaire.

He started with the best put down in stand-up history (it had to be a plant)
"ooooooo no shut yer face"
I expect I'll be tittering uncontrollably. Thank you. 🌹

The transcript for this is hilarious.
A far far better time.

clever clogs...nice ! i think he is one clever clog :)
Ooooh Noooo Wait x
Funny how frankie howerd never thought of himself as intelligent as he clearly was.
6:40
So clever and funny
i would like to know if Frankie Howard is still alive
1917 - 1992
Genius
A Genius
Ronnie Corbett famously had a pop at him (to his face). Howard wàs apparently mortified. Until I saw this clip I thought Corbett might be onto something.
@tvwafc71 - Google then download "Orbit" (for free) and you can download this - or ANYTHING. Good luck!
I saw this on tv first and my impression was --"What a slow audience". Maybe they filmed the confused ones in the audience.
Frankie used to rehearse his lines in church , Fact
these comics are probably in my fathers era and sometimes i wish i was born around that time because this day and age a lot of these young comedians have no catch phrases or ways of approaching the audience. I think that they do also use language and are not quite as funny and have no manners
@bossyboots55 In your what? Endo?
Totally ruined by insulting adverts - what a shame
Frankie is the main man ! Sid Vicious.
Very funny man
What can you do in five minutes ? And that's enough from you Madam !
The Queen of camp
An Original ! RIP .
Brittin used to have funny people!
Just uneal
Never that good .😊
is it just me or you too find the British accent makes the English so boring to be comedians?
I think the laughometer was played a few times
