      It's been several years, but one good summer I was able to take a plate and a knife out to the garden and make a full salad, everything except the dressing. This year my goal is to do it again. My area is too hot to grow lettuce in the summer but I can grow spinach.

    WARNING! At 02:00 minutes we see in your video that you applied a greyish powder "CEMENT" to a halved sweet potato before encasing it in wet straw. I wanted to discuss the potential implications of this practice and ensure accurate information for your audience.
    Sweet potatoes flourish in slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions, ideally within a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. The use of a greyish powder, if it were cement containing lime, would actually increase the soil's alkalinity when mixed with water, which could be counterproductive for sweet potato growth. Cement is not typically used in horticulture for pH adjustment due to its strong alkaline nature and potential to disrupt soil and plant health.
    If the goal is to adjust the soil pH to the sweet potato's preferred range, there are other substances that could be considered, which are also greyish in colour and more appropriate for use in gardening:
    1. Rock Phosphate: Often greyish, this can add phosphorus to the soil, aiding root development.
    2. Perlite: This can improve soil aeration and drainage, beneficial for root growth.
    3. Horticultural Lime: While usually white, it can appear greyish and is used to raise the pH of overly acidic soils.
    4. Potassium Sulphate: A greyish mineral that provides potassium and sulphur, both essential nutrients for plants.
    If the powder you used is indeed one of these substances or another beneficial amendment, it would be helpful to specify this to your viewers to avoid any confusion and ensure the best practices for growing healthy sweet potatoes.
    Thank you for your dedication to gardening education, and I hope this information is helpful for you and your audience.

    No need to cut in half and plant the tuber. Just pull the sprouts off and plant them in the bag.
    The tuber can stay in the "incubator" to produce more sorouts for staggered planting

      É só usar os brotos mais grossos dos ramos e replantar. As folhas retiradas serem como alimento pra animais, inclusive galinhas.

    • @juancho_2884
      @juancho_2884 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yo sí lo veo necesario. Dudo que el tubérculo pueda servir para incubar mas de una vez ya que el metabolismo para producir plantulas una vez que se activa es irreversible. Osea, una vez que se activa la maquinaria para producir brotes se empiezan a consumir las reservas. Además, me parece mas eficiente dejar el tubérculo porque así la plantula tiene una reserva mientras se adapta al nuevo ambiente y empieza a consumir los nutrientes del suelo

    WARNING! At 03:50 minutes we see in your video that you applied vegetable and fruit peels, cooked rice and a lot of dried milk poweder. A gardener's addition of cooked rice, vegetable and fruit peels, and dried milk powder to soil for sweet potatoes can have mixed effects. While organic matter can enhance soil, cooked rice may attract pests and cause fungal growth. Fresh peels can deplete nitrogen during decomposition and also attract pests. Excessive dried milk powder can disrupt soil pH, lead to odors, and attract pests and pathogens. These additions could lead to pest infestation, disease, nutrient imbalance, and pH changes, negatively impacting sweet potato health. Proper composting and moderation of these materials, along with soil monitoring, are recommended to avoid such issues.

    The density of soild in the ground is more dense and takes more energy to push through it. The soil bag is lesser in density and the bag itself has a small bit of flexibility and less constriction so the soil is actually better to breath and takes less energy to grow into it.

      I find that's not really the case. Mine are grown in-ground in clay soil and I don't have an outdoor place to store them, so they get washed and brought inside, then stored in cardboard boxes at room temperature after they have surface dried. Any scuffs from washing heal up within a week and the roots store just fine for about a year, gradually drying out as they sprout. I also don't cure, though I'm pretty sure that is useful for developing sugar content. I prefer them more on the starchy side and use them in savory dishes, though, so the additional sugar isn't important to me.
      As an aside, I don't think these are large tubers! I had quite a few in the 2.5-5 pound (1-2 kilo) range this year.

      I left mine in a bucket on the porch for a few days, and we had a heavy rain that blew into the bucket. I'd planned on just brushing them off then storing them, but they were unintentionally washed. They have not lasted as long as they had previously. I've had to inspect them every few days, and when they have some bad spots I cut them out and make bread and cookies. So it turned out OK, but I only had a few survive long enough to make slips. This year I will process what I pull right away.

    Kalau di daerah indonesia menanam umbi rambat bukan dari umbinya,tapi dari pohonnya atau dari rambatnya saja langsung d tanam. Orang ini caranya seperti menanam kentang di daerah sinih 👍

    Looks like you have a very long and warm growing season. It would help to know what growing zone you are in. Growing in zone 8-9 here in Canada, and my sweet potato harvest have been quite small. They are sometimes rotting on me too as our weather is wet. Perhaps the bag trick would work well for me here too! Thanks for the interesting video!

      Well I have some Asian sweet potatoes that bloomed, and it looks like they have seed pods. I am waiting to see if they will ripen and have seed and was wondering if you knew anything about that. My potatoes vines were started from slip as normal, but seed would be cool.The bag was what I intended this summer before the hospital , glad to see what you did but I want to start with slips.@@DIYGardenIdeas

    Is this a healthy wholesome product to eat?

    • @DIYGardenIdeas
      @DIYGardenIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, growing sweet potatoes in bags of soil can result in larger potatoes because it allows for better drainage and aeration, which promotes healthy root growth. So, it's a great way to grow healthy and delicious sweet potatoes!
