T51r turbo mod on my RWB 911 sucks! Porsche 964 Turbo with EFR8374

  • I was always worried about swapping to a modern efficient Borg Warner EFR 8374 turbo & losing a bit of the 'drama' the previous oldschool HKS T04s turbo added. So I've bought an OCD works T51r modified turbo compressor housing. In this episode, I chuck it at the car & see what it sounds like.

    9:21 @Driftworks The noise is from the sharp pointed shape of the anti-surge divider. The shape of the anti-surge port down inside the compressor (just below the leading edge of the compressor) has no effect on the noise. The taper of the ocd works T51r mod is very shallow and obviously works, but even a fairly "blunt" taper will make noise. The stock housing could have been worked to an acceptable shape without the need to completely bore it out and fit an insert. I'm not entirely sure why they don't do that, but I do know that Borgwarner don't machine very far in to the anti-surge ports on the EFRs, and the casting can be a bit poor down in those tight spaces. If you don't like the noise, take your stock cover next door and square off the leading edge of the anti-surge divider in Craig's lathe, that'll take care of the bulk of it.

    The drain tank and scavenge pump are necessary because the turbo oil outlet sits below the level of the bottom of the case. If the turbo were in the engine compartment (or on the roof, or whatever place higher up you like) that setup would be unnecessary. Also, the left exhaust pipe is also the wastegate on the stock car, and it even has its own little bitty catalytic converter in it!

    What was so wrong with the previous turbo setup besides the impeller all mangled, why not just refit same as old. Was the car not fast enough before?

      Nothing wrong with it as such, but the engine is capable of more, so more is required.

    I reckon the broken HKS turbo sounded better 😋
    Regarding the intake could you create another staggered flap in front of the open section sealing in the opposite direction - top tight, bottom open.

    • @driftworks
      @driftworks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do too, but it sounded particularly good because it was broken. Hopefully no need for complicated ideas for the inlet, but I'll be keeping an eye.

    air filters really quiet the effect down unless under boost . did the same to my GTX3076R on my SR22 . OCD does nice work . interested in any spool variances from cover to cover if when you swap it. .

      It's on a K&N which is normally not a particularly noisy filter. I had a mesh type before.

    At least you didn't sell the old compressor housing ;) did you try the old one under load or just starting it up in the garage? may sounds better driving...?
    i had been wondering about the scavenge pump, thats a really nice way to do it!

      Im pretty sure on boost the unmodified one will sound good.My one when you rev it you cant actually hear it but as soon you drive it you can hear the sucking from the turbo.Boxer engine as well but 4 cylinders:)

    Guys I can tell you the whistle isnt that bad, It sounds louder because he has a mic in close vicinity to the turbo/intake vent.
    It will sound more subtle to him as hes in the car driving. I say keep because I know it won't sound that exaggertaed. Even better you have the standard housing at your disposal so can swap and change whenever you feel.

    • @driftworks
      @driftworks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can tell you that it is worse than the mic shows.
