It's a dark reflection on the real world...these characters are horrible people who have murdered countless of innocent victims, yet they are still allowed to rise to places of power. It is not an underdog story.
Wapol also just fits so well in the style Oda wants to take One Piece because he had mentioned how he originally was going to scrap the gear 5 because he didn't think his audience would like it but then decided to keep it because he didn't like how serious the story had gotten and he want to go back to how free and comical the beginning parts of the story was.

the funny thing is that if there was some random character that was introduced as a king that was useless but got a devil fruit that made them successful, found some dirt and then was on the run from WG, noone would find it weird, its just the fact that we've SEEN his story that makes it seem stupid

I love how One Piece villains as wacky, scary and despicable as they are all have a fighting chance to somehow be an eligible temporary or permanent straw hat crew like Wapol and Caribou, either by story progression or fans' wishful thinking. Like for me, as much as I love Yamato I'd much rather have Bon chan, Katakuri, Crocodile or Enel join the crew. (Specially Bon chan)

Wapol's transformation took a VERY short amount of time, total time (including the time skip) its probably under 3 years to go from King, to eating trash, to toy maker, to creator of wapometal, to once again a king important enough to be invited to the Revery.
One of the endless things rhat makes me love one piece,and actually near the tippy top is that a villain that is totally without good qualities and completely easy to hate and could be viewed as truly evil never loses hope of redemption as long as they're still alive theyre redeemable and capable of change remorse and most of all hope. Maybe he'd be able to combine things he's eaten with thing or people in the environment. Like if he ate a steal beam, he can combine that with the walls of a building to make it into steal. Or combining a creature he ate with a castle to make a living castle that's loyal to him.

But he goes beyond that and can fuse what he eats & regurgitate it in a new form. I think he would turn any natured environment he eats and turn them into building materials or uses that element as a weapon for the manmade stuff he eatin before and combine them into element weapons.
Honestly between Caribou and now Wapol, seems like Oda specifically takes the characters, particularly villains, with a penchant for "consuming" things and turn them into the potential vectors for _giving_ world-changing information unto the world, at least key figures. One could even potentially semi-include Bonney in this basket, since she appeared to know more than she let on about a few things and _definitely_ may know a few key things after diving into Kuma's memories. Verily, gluttons are the true fonts of knowledge in the One Piece world. XD
I agree since Bonney looked like she stopped hating Vegapunk and tried to kill him in started to like him and i do hope the next chapter or later in the current arc, we should get a flash back on what happed AFTER Bonney when inside Kuma's memory paw bubble when Vegapunk was in that same room and why she changed her mood.
I think it's safe to say that Vivi will eventually join back up with the Strawhats, but what if Wapol also joins them? Carrot, Yamato or whoever were never going to be the next Strawhat, it was always Wapol who would be the next Strawhat! His role on the ship will be Vice Pirate King!

It's funny, I know several people who dislike Wapol and were glad to be done with him when the Drum Island arc ended, and were mildly annoyed that he got more time during his cover story. I can only imagine their reaction when they get to this point in the story, where it looks like Wapol will be relevant again.

oda has stated that he wanted to end one piece after around skypea at first. every character has seen a big important return from that time. except for enel and alvida. now you might say:" alvida is not important" but i actually think that alvida foreshadowes everything about imu. alvida has unlocked something similair to eternal youth and has slippery powers. if imu is a god or devil with a ink body that would fit as well. not only that but alvida also fell in love with joyboy aka luffy and saw luffys failed execution. we know that oda likes to inverse arcs. alvida also hangs out with buggy who resembles the op op no mi. if the strawhat foreshadowes joyboy then joyboy made a former user eat a devil fruit on (accident) and that former user hated joyboy. then buggy proceeds to scar luffys strawhat the same way blackbeard scarred shanks. (we know blackbeard is modern day rocks. so buggy could represent the rocks of the past or somebody related to him with the power of imortality)
Up until proven otherwise, I'm 100% convinced that St. Warcury transformed into a woolly hippo. Yet another way for Wapol to foreshadow things! It all matches!

I always wonder what's the Awakening of Munch Munch Fruit would look like if Wapol ever bothered training his power beyond the basic function.

It's funny, I know several people who dislike Wapol and were glad to be done with him when the Drum Island arc ended, and were mildly annoyed that he got more time during his cover story. I can only imagine their reaction when they get to this point in the story, where it looks like Wapol will be relevant again.
For me it was "He's meh -> Oh, he's back at reverie, cool -> NO HE DIDN'T ROFL -> Common you gotta tell papa Morgan! Spill the beans!

oda has stated that he wanted to end one piece after around skypea at first. every character has seen a big important return from that time. except for enel and alvida. now you might say:" alvida is not important" but i actually think that alvida foreshadowes everything about imu. alvida has unlocked something similair to eternal youth and has slippery powers. if imu is a god or devil with a ink body that would fit as well. not only that but alvida also fell in love with joyboy aka luffy and saw luffys failed execution. we know that oda likes to inverse arcs. alvida also hangs out with buggy who resembles the op op no mi. if the strawhat foreshadowes joyboy then joyboy made a former user eat a devil fruit on (accident) and that former user hated joyboy. then buggy proceeds to scar luffys strawhat the same way blackbeard scarred shanks. (we know blackbeard is modern day rocks. so buggy could represent the rocks of the past or somebody related to him with the power of imortality)
A year ago if I got "Wapol becomes not only relevant, but critical to the story" on a Bingo card I'd have thrown out the card and asked for a new one.
