  • Modelled by Hedi Kyle, Pine Hill, New York, USA, August 8, 2023. Model located at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries (MIT), Unlocking History Research Group archive, MC0760.
Hedi Kyle demonstrates her method of accurately folding an accordion by starting with one sheet of paper, folding it in half, and then halving each individual section with each subsequent fold, thereby reducing the chance for error over the course of the folding session. She does this accurate folding technique by inverting all folds to be mountain folds at the beginning of each iteration of folds, and bringing each mountain fold to a ‘ designated edge’.
Produced and directed by Ulla Warchol. Demonstrated by Hedi Kyle. Special thanks to Lucinda Warchol. Funded by Jana Dambrogio and Ulla Warchol in support of our project, “Unlocking History.”

This is actually pretty cool. I didn't think much of it at first. But then realized how precise this can make it and thought know this is cool

The 'magic' is that by folding back always to the same edge, it avoids the perennial problem of slippage which means most accordion books are trapezoidal! I have only seen this once before in relation to paper sculpting with an artist from the Far East. Changed my book-making for the better!

Hedi is a legend, you know. She was one of the original founders of what became the explosion of the "book arts" genre.
