I have been a professional chef about 30 years now, yet I have learned so much in this short video. The way she mixes, her speed, precision......the master-stroke was cooling it on two forks.....this inventiveness makes today's professional chefs look like rookies. Hat tip to your mom !
Of all the videos of Irish soda bread I have seen in the past 2 days, this was the neatest (no sticky hands or bowls). Had to laugh when Mom said she always measured very carefully and then proceeded to Measure in a very authentic way. Happy St Patty's Day.
This is a fantastic teaching video. I have watched many about baking Irish Soda Bread and this has been so full of helpful tips. Blessings to your family.
I've made Irish soda bread the messy way for years before gradually stumbling upon the technique demonstrated here. Wish I'd seen this years ago. Smart baking!
I watched this video a couple of years ago and this is how I now make Soda Bread however I use half brown flour and half white. I even roll it around the bowl to avoid over kneading. It turns out great every time. This is a fantastic video. Thanks to your Mum for her excellent tuition.
I've been making your mom's bread for about a year now and i just want to thank you again for the recipe, it's just amazing, i eat it almost exclusively now and it has really made a huge difference to my lifestyle. I have pretty bad arthritis so i can't exercise much, as a result my weight was up around 16.5 stone which only made matters worse, now i'm 13.3 and and never hungry. Less weight = less pain. So thanks for the recipe and God bless.
You're very welcome! My mom unfortunately passed away this week (age 91). Lots of friends are commenting on how they loved her bread, and some of have even made it as a tribute to her.
@@number6photo My sincere condolences regarding the passing if your dear Mother.... ...this precious video of her breadmaking grants us something of her legacy .... Thank you!!
My wife fell in love with this bread on our trip to Ireland. Your Mom's recipe gives us the closest result to what we had in Dublin. I especially love the technique of not handling the dough and rolling it in the pot. My wife adores it. Thank you for sharing your family with us.
What a wonderful video! Your mom is a treasure, and no written recipe could convey the masterful and charming way she makes this bread. I learned so much from this, and I hope more people will share their family recipes this way.
I really like the way you handled the dough. Very interesting. I am going to try it this week. Thank you so much for this video. I'm missing my mother so much. I really wish I had a video of her cooking. This video is a treasure.
I attempted to make this bread before watching your video, but now I know the brown bread-making secrets of a true Irish Mom. Thanks so much and God bless for this video!!!
I've made this countless times, as per your mothers recipe. It hasn't turned out bad once, she is definitely right though... do not over kneed it. Just roll it lightly. Thank you so much for sharing!
Wonderful mother, wonderful bread your simply the best 😊😊 who would give it a thumbs down that's awful 😢 we don't see this beautiful women face but, she looks so special how she takes care of every step she's diffently a kind hearted lady , God Bless You and grant you Paradise. Ameen.
My great aunt, Marion Carmody, from Mt. Hope Wisconsin, would come visit her only nephew and his 6 kids (me#5) in Texas every winter during the 60's and 70's.... She would make irish brown bread using similar methods, but with bran and rolled oats. The house would smell like a bakery, and she would stay 2 weeks, long enough to make 3 batches of multiple loaves. She passed 22 years ago and I still havent quite got the recipe down. I end up with a giant scone! Thanks for sharing...great memories.
This was great. I've made soda bread many times, but following this made the best ever. Family was well pleased! Thank you to you and your mom for sharing this!
This is the best soda bread video on the web. It's a lot like my ma's (Mayo) though she sometimes added a little oats and honey or treacle (I guess in place of sugar).
Thank you so much for sharing this video. Not only is the bread made skillfully, but the 2 forks trick speaks volumes of your mother's adaptability and creativity.
I use this exact recipe from this video every week, although I always have to watch the video as I'm baking it to get it right. It's the way my nana used to make it, and tastes delicious, thanks for uploading!
My husband is from kilkenny ireland and he was always saying how hemissed his gran's brown bread. I followed your video and i have to say my husband loves this bread "almost like gran's" you get 2 thumbs up from me, thank you so much.
Colm Boran, you don't even know man.. how Immortal this makes your Mom. God Bless you and your family. You thought Sorca's bread was famous when we were all in school together.
Irish man in Sydney homesick ahead of St Patrick's day, will be making this later today to have a taste of an Irish mammy's cooking from home. Great video, thanks for posting it.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It's absolutely wonderful. We just returned from Ireland (we were in the same area your mom grew up) and my baby loved the brown bread, as did we. I've been trying to recreate it at home but haven't quite gotten it right. This video shows me so much. And honestly it brought a tear to my eye. How I treasure and miss the time spent with my mom in the kitchen. I thank you for both for bringing back that special feeling for me.
she cooks like my grandmother almost impossible to write down. watching and repeating is the only way to do this sort of wonderful cooking. with age you have learnt so much, thanks to all the mum's and nana's out there tfs
My mom passed away this year and watching this video brought tear to my eyes. Your moms voice sounds like my moms. Thank you for sharing the recipe and the magic
You're very welcome, Julie. Sorry to hear about your mom passing away. My dad passed away 2 year ago, so I know how you feel. My mom will be 89 in a couple months, and she still makes the bread occasionally, although I do it most of the time for family gatherings.
Thank you so much, and your mom too, for making this video! I was in Ireland last month and was immediately won over by the taste of Irish Soda Bread. I bought the Soda there, because we don't have it here and started to experiment, but never got it quite right. So now I saw how to do it, I hope mine will be as good as your moms! Thanks again!
I made it! It turned out better than I expected! Thanks for the video! Every St. Patrick's Day, I look for a recipe for traditional brown bread. THIS is IT. Thanks, again!
You are a good man for making this video of your Mum making Brown Bread it looks like the Brown Bread my girlfriends Mum would make. I loved to eat it warm out of the oven with her sweet spread and jam. I don't know who would give this video a thumbs down but whoever they are they have got a soul so dark it could block out the light of day and a heart as cold it could freeze Galway bay in the summer.
I am glad she got a good laugh from it sometimes it is the simple things in life that can bring a smile to a person's day and may the big man up stairs not take a liken to her for another 87 rotations of the earth completely around the sun.
Thanks, I just baked one without sugar but rest according to your Mother's instructions. It turned out lovely as well. Thanks for recording a piece of history.
Just got back from Ireland and loved the brown bread. This was so much fun to watch and I will try it. I have Ireland in my heart now, and I want the bread too!
Thanks for this! Tried it yesterday and it turned out great! My husband couldn't stop eating it. I had tried a different brown bread recipe one other year and it wasn't nearly as good as this way of doing it. So, we were doing the white soda bread, but not after this. Thanks to your mom for showing us how and for your extra tips written in! Very helpful tips from you both.
I lived in Ireland for a year as a child... have very good memories... watching you make Irish Bread the old fashion way, it's fantastic! Thank you very much for sharing!
Watching this video made me very happy, and very sad. It could have been my mother's hands, and I have the same yellow bowl of hers in my kitchen. :) thank you for providing me the reminder of how to perfectly make this delicious bread as my dear mom did all those years ago - just in time for March 17th!! And thank you for sharing your mom's wisdom and obvious kindness w/ us all. :)
Awesome video..I love to watch other food traditions and recipes...this one looks like a keeper. Your mother is beautiful, I love the accent. I fresh grind my wheat before baking so this recipe is going to make one heck of a delicious weekend breakfast! Thank you ~
I grew up in this as a treat. 1 loaf was shared with a family of 10. Served warm with butter, or cheddar cheese on it was the best. She was a kind woman who was a blessing to the whole neighborhood. I'm so glad this was put to video.
I always watch this video before I make brown soda bread. After 16 years in Texas the taste brings back memories of Carlow. It's as authentic as Crotty's Bakery on Tullow St could bake it.
Thank you very much for posting this! My aunt passed away before I had a chance for her to show me her recipe. This was very close to it and added sugar to our taste. My family loved it. Cheers and thanks again. Slainte.

Great idea to see your Mum make the bread. Mum's always have their little secrets and they never get into the recipe on paper. I never saw brown bread made in a saucepan like that and I live in Ireland. I love the way she wasted no flour when flouring the pot. The excess went into the mixing bowl!
Hi. You probably won't see this as the message as it was posted a few years ago. But, I have just made this bread following your recipe and I cooked it in my slow cooker. And I must say it has turned out gorgeously! I'm so excited to try a piece but I have to wait for it to cool down. I'm going to have it with another Irish meal called coddle (I think that's what you call it). That will be cooked in my slow cooker as well. Thank you for sharing.
Bail ó Dhia ar an obair. This brought back so many memories. I have my mother's recipe that she got from her mother. I make it on St. Patrick's Day. I remember eating it with slathers of butter when I was just a little kid. That bread was where I got my love of caraway as my mother made hers with currants and caraway seeds. We were "home" this summer and with all the changes in Carlow Town shopping you can't get a nice locally baked brown soda. My MIL buys hers from TESCO or Aldi now. My husband and I both agree that your mother's recipe, which I've been using for a decade here in Texas tastes the way brown bread used to taste.
I really enjoyed this video! I love how your mom explains that she always measures very carefully...I've been trying to find a good recipe for the Irish brown bread and this video has been so helpful! I can't wait to try this. Ever since I got back from Ireland this past December, I've been trying to find brown bread like I had in the pubs...and you just can't find it here in the States. All you can find is the sweet "soda bread" they make at St Patrick's Day.

I like the bowl manipulation for the shaping. Part of the proof is the texture. There is no footage of the sliced loaf interior. That would have been helpful. Whole wheat is the way to go. The whole operation is a good example of using what you have and making it work. I'm a fan of that way of thinking. The naked, unadorned loaf is a beautiful and tasty thing.
Your mum was clearly an expert...nice vid. Now gotta watch my mum making gravy, stuffing, turkey, beef, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, chicken, and everything else I loved as a kid before she dies. Her cooking ruined me for modern life.
Just found this today, how wonderful that you have this video of you mum. I love her voice, and could watch her cook all day. Please tell me you made more! :)
I'll try it, just this way, too!! A mic on mom would be helpful if you are going to do more. I love this easy recipe. She tells tales on herself though when she said she measures everything very carefully, ha ha ~ no way! Mom's are funny that way ~ their individual techniques are so developed by this time that they believe their on the money with the measurements they state. I just started making different kinds of breads ~ they are so much easier than I thought and pretty forgivable w most ingredients. Just get the moisture vs flour ratio right and don't over handle or knead, right Mom? Thanks for taking the time to post, you two! I learned a few good tips here!
I have been a professional chef about 30 years now, yet I have learned so much in this short video. The way she mixes, her speed, precision......the master-stroke was cooling it on two forks.....this inventiveness makes today's professional chefs look like rookies. Hat tip to your mom !

Had a craving for the bread my mum used to make, I'm surprised I didn't learn this simple recipe off her when I was young. Anyway we have TH-cam now.
Just found this today, how wonderful that you have this video of you mum. I love her voice, and could watch her cook all day. Please tell me you made more! :)
Rainy H glad you liked it. Yes indeed, I make it a few times a year when my brothers and sisters and my family are together.
i
@@number6photo i mesnt more videos of your mum. :D
Rainy H ha! Sorry, that was the only one.
Thank you so much for this. Ii is hard to find soda bread here, and this will help me to make something approaching decent.
Great work ,i love this recipe just like my nanna used to make in dublin ......
