I told my last “best friend” about these reminders when I noticed how complacent he was about sin. I genuinely thought we were going to grow in faith together, but he shrugged off my correction.
He kept going down his sinful path and I blindly followed. Eventually, the depth of our sinfulness weren’t sitting right with me anymore so I pulled back.
And now we’re so different from each other: He’s so deep into his sinfulness and living comfortably in it while still claiming to be a “Christian”; I’m trying to get back to where I was before I met him and am trying to rebuild my relationship with the Lord.
He studied Theology but it didn’t transform him; My foundation was built through small Bible studies and I’m grateful that it keeps pulling me back to where my feet should be planted.
“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’”
    - 1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV
Be mindful about whom you’re getting yourself associated with. Watch out for wolves in sheep’s clothing.

I understand what you're saying, but i think there is an element of 'judge not, lest ye be judged' going on in your situation with that friend of yours. By all means see that his life is "sinful", BUT it's also your duty to call him out and correct him, as a fellow Christian.
Quite besides that, you say you were partaking in the very same sinful pursuits - which tempers you(r) testimony, and should actually convict you to pray for your friend, all the more - given his open choice to slip into the old life of sin.
First priority as a follower of Christ? Pray for your friend, with all faith, so that God can work on him.

It would take a great weight off your mind if you apply for an agency that operates in your area to provide care for your sons some key hours during the week. The carer would stay with them in the home and you can specify the help you need for their daily needs. After you feel comfortable and you both have a routine for your sons, you would be freed up for errands or maybe a part time job. State medicaid covered the carer. All we had to do was sign off on the hours each day. You will need to do some research to find an agency who can provide the care you are seeking for your sons. I'm sure you know Homeinstead and Visiting Angel's businesses like those are the ones you look for and the sons surely have medicaid. You should not be out of pocket for their care. A great agency in Arkansas is Superior Senior Care and they worked closely with us and were knowledgeable about state requirements under medicaid and special needs clients.
Our mother had through the week church services on the tv and radio.
She would follow in her Bible with each service she watched or listened to and maybe there's a local church who records their service or people meet to study and worship over the phone. The Internet has so many programs available too.

Hi friend. The devil is a living and deceptive enemy. One of his tricks is to run us in circles to the point where it seems if it's not one thing it's another and we get confused and discouraged.
Consider Philippians 4:13, and ask the Lord how that works. I think He is interested in our depending on Him more than our self will in fighting temptation.

      Hi friends.
When we get drunk our personality becomes more self destructive. At some point this behavior causes addiction and bondage. If we try to quit once addicted the personality we take on through drunkenness tempts us to return to the sin. The end result is death. Romans 6:23. That personality in our mind that tempts us is the demon of addiction and alcohol.

I KNOW IM SAVED. Where in my comment did I say, "I'm saved by works?"
      Right. NOWHERE.

Not one single person, including yourself, lives a life of 100% obedience. If we did we wouldn't need to be SAVED from anything. But we do need Salvation by way of JESUS.

**PSALM 139:23-24** Clearly shows we can fall back into sin and activities that are offensive to HIM...after we are Saved.
Why would a saved person plead with GOD to examine him to see if any unclean thing be in his heart? Because they are CONVINCTED that they are doing something wrong by way of the HOLY SPIRIT.
HE is keeping us in HIS hand. **JOHN 10:28.**
      Sin doesn't erase our salvation.
**Malachi 3:2-3** REFINING fire. HE does this through conviction, we confess repentance of sin, and we follow HIM.
With your logic that would mean that believers aren't convincted of sin. Then...how do believers know they have sinned??? By the CONVINCTION of the HOLY SPIRIT.
The influence of the HOLY SPIRIT in an unsaved person's life will lead to realization that the person is guilty, and ALL sinners deserve judegement.
Once a sinner has been saved the HOLY SPIRIT will continue to refine that person and their behavior.
We are viewed as "sinless" positionally, in JESUS under the blood. We are declared righteous but have no inherent righteousness.
Paul (who most certainly was Saved) talked about sinning. **Romans 7:18**
      **HEB 12:7**, **1JOHN **1:10****

It's HAS been getting better, not giving up, but the first ladies' Bible study was tonight, and I just didn't have the energy for it. I also tried to wake them up, showing the love of Christ, but was eventually shunned. Not one person had a testimony of anything Christ had done for them, o of their own salvation, other than being water baptized. They couldn't even speak His name. Scary.

I’ve been a Christian for over 20 years and only lately have I been struggling somewhat with my faith. The constant battle between the flesh and spirit gets quite old, it never ends. We’re called to live “holy lives” yet we have this sin ‘nature’ that still exists. We have Christ’s imputed righteousness which ‘makes’ us holy (in Gods sight) but it is impossible for us to actually BE “holy” in a practical sense, in this flesh, because of what we are at our core, sinners. Why would I ask or expect a dog to be anything more than a dog? Why would it be asked that anything be anything OTHER than what it was created to be? THIS I struggle with,…

I am disabled and unable to get to church. I haven't found a good church around where I live yet that has transportation to get me to and from church. Most of the churches in my town don't preach the gospel like it should be. I don't purposely isolate myself from Christian fellowship. I just can't get to where I CAN have Christian fellowship. I am on disability, and Ubering to church, if I had a church, would cost too much. You're trying to make some of feel bad because due to circumstances beyond our control, we JUST CAN'T GET TO CHURCH. I wish you could understand what it's like not to be able to go where you want to go. That doesn't make us backsliding Christians. It breaks my heart that I can't be with other people who love Jesus.

I think what Todd is talking about here is avoiding church and fellowship not being unable to get to church - two very different things. So don't feel condemned. The Lord knows your heart. Do you know believers from somewhere else you could call for some phone fellowship. My mum-in-law would pray and even sing over the phone with a believing friend when she was housebound. I suspect we're not even in the same country (I'm UK) or I'd come and pick you up and take you to church. You touched my heart - praying you will find fellowship.

There is a way for those people to "do church" without going to a local church. For "shut ins" as my pastor likes to call them, they can listen to the preaching online. We can visit them and talk to them. We can do separate Bible studies outside of Sunday school with them.
Todd's words are aimed at the able bodied who have no excuse. Even I, who can't drive, found a way to get there. I take the church bus.
Todd is talking about people avoiding a local church, not people who are truly incapacitated and can't attend. And let's face it, those people are in the minority. Accommodations can be made for them, though, as I already said.
It would be like saying that people ought to get jobs and work for their money and saying "What about the disabled and the elderly?" Exceptions don't disprove the rule.

@@deitert07 Thank you for the question. The Bible tells us that if we've been saved we cannot keep on sinning (1 John 3:9) "Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God."
Jesus died for the sins of those who believe in Him, and if they believe then they will not willfully sin against Him, which would be playing the hypocrite, saying we believe God and go on to sin against Him willfully. Still, if we sin unwillingly which we all do, then we still receive forgiveness if we confess our sins.
(1 John 2:1-2) "My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world."
So if you're living in sin, you need to repent, and if you've been born again then you will definitely experience victory over whatever sin you're living in, even if it's an addiction, no matter how addicting. If you never stop living in sin and never repent, then you have not been born of God and yes, you will go to hell. Just wait until certain attendees let you know by saying actual words, and wait for when it is the leaders of the church, because they are the worst when they do it. The absolute worst thing about Christianity is the followers, because they are a bunch of sinners. I’m 100% serious!
Also many of the church leaders and pastors would fit right in with the pharisees and sadducees, as Jesus called them vipers. Not all, but enough to cause problems.
I say this not scare you off, but to encourage you to focus on your relationship with Christ, and to forget about those others. Everyone else is going to let you down, but the secret is, you are also going to let people down. And when you realize this you can offer grace, because the Lord has give you Grace.
Seek guidance from the Holy Spirit, and if you are going to leave the church you are at, leave well and only do so to go to another church. Even if the church doesn’t treat you well bless them on your departure.
Remember, you don’t need someone to teach you the scriptures, the Holy Spirit can teach you. Church is for fellowship with believers to heal the wounds from the world and to build each other up so we can be perfect in the work we are called to do. If your church doesn’t do that, try to be the positive change, and if it does not and God has you move on, do so with grace.

I’m a Christian. I have been since I was 12 years old and am currently 29 about to turn 30. I’ve never felt convicted for reading dark fantasy books and historical fiction novels. The language can be spicy, and anytime there’s sex I just skip past it. For me there’s a huge difference between glorifying real world evil and simply portraying evil in a story. I’m fairly confident in my faith and walk with God. I’m bipolar, so I don’t go out much and that includes going to church because I have severe social anxiety when I’m in settings like that, so my means of escaping my bipolar mind is to fill it with God’s Word after I wake up, and then after that I read a book, watch tv or play a game. I like stories that have high stakes and aren’t simply Good vs. Evil stories. Am I wrong to enjoy those types of stories? If I ever feel convicted for reading a story I put it down, but for the most part I rarely experience that. Does that mean I’m numb to the Holy Spirit? Or is it simply my spirit of discernment saying I can enjoy those stories since they don’t affect my faith?

    • @michaelnewzealand1888

They probably aren't good for you to be reading, but no one is perfect. I love it how you skip over the bad bits. I watch movies that arent' good for me. Ideally we should be reading the word more and listening to worship music etc but the flesh is real and God knows that. I encourage you to seek God more, and guess what, as a more mature (older) Christian me too.

Thanks for the reply. I commit to reading a study Bible that I bought and downloaded onto my phone a few years ago, and I pray daily, or at least as often as I remember. I just enjoy more serious stories with higher stakes for the main characters and stories that are a bit more morally grey than books like The Lord of the Rings (a book I greatly enjoy as well). I think that’s where the spirit of discernment comes in, like what Paul talks about in Romans 14:13-23. I’ve determined I don’t like sex scenes in books or movies and such so I skip past them, but I like the drama and conflict that those types of stories provide. I think God allows us to enjoy things within reason as long as it’s not encouraging you to live a lifestyle of sin.

Hypocrisy is rife in the church but that should not deter us. As a disabled Christian, I’m constantly judged (by Christians) for not “doing” more etc. Not all disabilities appear outward, mine is due to brain trauma. I find non-Christians actually believe me and do not judge me for not always being able to “do” or serve. I’ve literally lost best friends over this progressive disability. I am chief of sinners and I pray, read the Bible and watch videos like these but am not able to be in church every Sunday. That should not be viewed as backsliding or less than in the eyes of the church. IMO

I want to go to Church, but every time I go, I end up running for the halls holding my head within a few minutes. People must think I'm possessed or something! I usually end up watching online sermons, but I'm definitely missing the fellowship. What should I do?

I'm sorry you're going through this. Just my advice as a fellow Christian: seek solutions or medical attention for your conditions. Maybe a doctor could help you manage or eliminate the sudden headaches. There may also be some specific glasses (or sunglasses) that can help with the light. Maybe sit in a different spot in the sanctuary if there's a spot that gets less light? Definitely tell the elders of the church what's going on, and ask them and the congregation to pray for you as you seek solutions. Who knows? They might adjust the lighting, and if people know that you desperately want to be there but struggle with perfume/cologne, people might start wearing less of it. Just keep trying to find ways to attend church in-person, and remember that when God gave the command to gather and not forsake the assembly, He knew in advance that you and many others would have struggles and obstacles.

@@roseashford5143 Except prayer and meditation are not the same thing. Meditating on God's word and His character are necessary as well, but that is not praying,
Praying is leaning on God with our lips. Speaking to Him, lifting our requests and petitions to Him, waiting upon Him as a servant on their master, pouring your heart out to Him. This different than meditation and if you are not praying daily, diligently and prioritizing it above your own interests then you are not keeping the command to pray without ceasing.
Trying to do something else, like bible reading, or meditating on the word, or evangelizing in place of praying will leave a Christian weak and ineffectual at best, and lost walking away from Jesus at worst.

I have been feeling discouraged because although there are many people around me who are professing Christians, most of them do not live Christlike lives and live more like the world. I am constantly being criticized for trying to live according to the Bible, for not being worldly and even for what I am choosing to study and do professionally (while I am not yet sure what career I am going to be working in, I am currently studying Theology in university). I am constantly being made to feel inferior and these people are always trying to rub worldly things in my face to make me feel less successful or accomplished or as if I am wasting my life by not living like them. They also take any opportunity they can to remind me of past shortcomings or failures in my walk as a Christian.
Please pray that I will persevere and that the things these people are doing will not get to me. Please also pray that I will find a church home where I can belong to a support system of believers. Also, that I would make friends somehow. Please also pray that if it is possible, God would put distance between myself and these people because their behavior is distressing and has gone on for so long without any change. Thank you.

We always tried to be that biblical example even in the face of adversity from the religious people. About four months ago, the Lord called my family to pastor a church. It's been an amazing opportunity to change the wordly church standards into one that follows the biblical example. What is interesting, God has been leading other like minded brothers and sisters there. We have had several people come in who don't fit the social club status of most churches today, but those are exactly my kind of people. We shouldn't be rejecting the fellowship and gatherings with each other. If nothing else, start a home church and invite some friends and family. These “lists” are helpful in keeping us on our guard against sin creeping into our lives, but the walk in life as a Christian is a little more complicated than checking off lists. We are always tempted to sin because our nature is sinful. Jesus died on that cross because God knew we would never be without sin.
Let me be clear, we should not wallow in our sin and use our nature as an excuse. Paul writes about his struggles with sin. We know what we should do, but we don’t. We know what we shouldn’t do, but we do it anyway. Satan wants you bitter and angry because he achieves his purpose of pulling us away from the Father. Satan loves to convince us to sin then laugh and say, “See, you scumbag, you’re so evil God can never love you or forgive you!” Don’t fall for his lies and deception! Please trust in Jesus, pray, ask for forgiveness. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the strength to say “No!” to the devil’s voice. God still loves you, just don’t live in willful rebellion against Him or Satan wins. Keep your faith, my friend.

I haven’t done research on this at all, but to me “devotion” means time devoted to the Lord, by being in His Word, in prayer with Him and worship. I have my devotion every morning. My “first fruits” of the day. I “devote” my time to Him when I first get up. I’m reading in the scriptures, praying and I worship Him also. My whole day is devoted to Him… but in the context of your question and in the manner in which Todd used it… it means time devoted, every day, to be in His Word. Some people use books to help them study, others don’t, they prefer to just open the Bible and study on their own. Like you said you do. Which is GREAT!!! I’ve done both and love both!!
But yes, “devotion” to me simply means “time devoted to God, in His Word, everyday.”

Christ is the shepherd and He gave us his flock to be a part of. There is great protection and security in the flock.
Christ is the example for all of us and we all will fall short of living up to His example. But His spirit enables us to be more like Him. And often the church is what He uses for that.
