      True that! Seeing these side by side... Some are just missing the parallax scrolling, some are just slower, but a couple might even look better! Some show the programming of the Genesis ports were just lazy. But man... Go back in time and give the SMS an upgraded sound chip and a better lawyer to fight Nintendo... There would be no stopping it!

      @@f.k.b.16 Overall the SMS kicked some major ass. The fact these could even come close to the Genesis in many cases is a testament to how great it was. If you watch the NES vs SNES video the NES doesn't come nearly as close to its 16 bit counterpart.

    Road Rash on the Master System is a technical marvel. Even more so on the Game Gear where they upped the colour count and shrunk the graphics but it still looks and plays great!

    • @RetroComparisons
      @RetroComparisons  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I couldn't believe how good that port was the first time I played it (the GG port too). Normally something that would come that close graphically to a 16 bit port suffers in some other way like framerate but all things considered it felt great to play in addition to looking great.

    • @Longlostpuss
      @Longlostpuss 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RetroComparisons It was clearly superior to the NES in terms of visual quality. The sound was the only thing you could say was a tie between the two, as you just know the limitations of 8-BIT sound, it is what it is (I love 8-BIT music by the way, there's something really nostalgic and endearing about it).
      The sheer depth of colour, the resolution and the sprite density on screen was enough to see a clear night and day difference between the SMS and the NES, not to mention the SMS did not suffer the horrible sprite flickering and scroll clipping like the NES did, even when pushed to its limits.
      Your video here illustrates that there wasn't as much a gulf in quality between the SMS and the MD as it would suggest down on paper and is a demonstration of what quality care in development can produce, no matter how limited the resources on deck.

    • @RetroComparisons
      @RetroComparisons  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Longlostpuss Very well said! The NES had the advantage of having a huge and great library (largely because of Nintendo's monopoly of the market at the time) but the SMS was leagues ahead in terms of visuals. I do have a recent video up of the NES vs SMS in case you're interest btw. The upgrade to the Genesis was still big but not nearly in the same regard as the NES to the SNES.

    Well here is an epic drop I was not expecting! Two of my favorite consoles going head to head! I do need to stop and appreciate your efforts real quick. In a lot of your comparisons, you do not just do a comparison of the start of the first level. There is quite a bit of involvement into the game where you are multiple levels in and pulling clips from those points. Pretty damn cool!!!!
    I will need to watch this in full and give a further break down, I will have to say the SMS came up to bat on more than one occasion and was not afraid to swing some homers!

    Good thing that the Mega Drive is backwards compatible with the Master System as both systems are great, there are many shared titles that are different games between them too, such as Castle of Illusion, Aladdin and more. Taking into account the exclusives for the SMS and not needing to actually own the original console to play them on the 16-bit machine was a great move by SEGA.

    • @RetroComparisons
      @RetroComparisons  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was always intrigued by the Master System as a kid and I wish I had known that the power base converter was a thing back then. Fortunately there's no need for that these days with the Everdrive allowing you to play SMS games on there.

    • @roberto1519
      @roberto1519 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@RetroComparisons it's possible you'll appreciate what's best from the SMS now better than then, you'll have no nostalgia mostly, but this can be a good thing to actually enjoy its exclusives with much more experience you have today.
      As for the Power Base Converter, another aspect that made it great is the controller, being able to play Master System games with the much better gamepad is yet another advantage. It's crazy how the 8-bit Sonic titles differ quite a lot from their 16-bit counterparts, and the Game Gear received an exclusive Sonic and two Tails games too. Sonic 2 (8-bit) is a personal favorite since I played it on the Game Gear and on the SMS (much better version due to the larger screen) later.

    • @RetroComparisons
      @RetroComparisons  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@roberto1519 That's a great point. Back then I probably would have been disappointed by the graphics wanting them to be as good as the Genesis. Without nostalgia to fog things up it's easier to appreciate things now for what they were.
      Those Sonic games on the GG & SMS are great and I love that you get something different out of them instead of being watered down Genesis ports. I played all of them about 10 years ago for the first time and had a blast.

    Some awesome 8-bit versions of 16 bit games on the SMS, greate. A curious comparission could be the SMS X PC-Engine, I know they share some titles like WOnder Boy III, but I do not know how many games in total are on both systems. That would be interesting cause the PC-Engine, with a 8-bit main cpu but with a 16-Bit gpu, is only capable of 1 layer of BG, just like the SMS, but of course can draw a lot more sprites (more then the Sega Genesis) on screen.

    This is a pretty big comparison; good work, Bill. I think this one, like something like NES vs SNES (or NES vs TG16/PC-Engine), are some of the more interesting comparisions, since these are what we wanted to know back then in the 80s and 90s: is the upgrade worth it? Nearly invariably, I think that was the case though there's maybe a few outliers: I prefer SMS PGA Tour over the Genesis game, the flying disc/frisbee event was just straight cut out of the Genesis version of California Games which automatically makes it inferior IMO, plus I just love the FM unit soundtrack for Double Dragon on the SMS compared to the lackluster music conversion on the Genesis though I do prefer the Genesis port overall vs the SMS DD. Oh, and I really appreciate the very strangely creepy soundtrack from Jeroen Tel in the 8-bit versions of Bram Stoker's Dracula...his work was always interesting and/or great. The Genesis wins the vast majority of the comparisons that I've played on both, but I think the SMS does okay to good in many, but I know MK3 is definitely one of the biggest losers. I'll have to check out more of the video later on though.

You listed some great examples of games where the SMS is actually better than the Genesis. I was working on another video last night which also had Bram Stoker's Dracula and it got me thinking, is there another example where the 8 bit version is better than the 16 bit version and the 16 bit version is better than the "upgraded" console after it? The SMS/NES game is a lot of fun whereas I think the Genesis/SNES version is pretty crappy and then the Sega CD version is one of the worst games I've ever played. But as far as this video goes, I mainly I made this it just so I could present Klax to the world again.

I stopped playing my Master System and Mega Drive around 94/95 (still have them both as well as my NES), but still alot of the games shown here were never available in the games shops I used to go to, all they sold were the hugely popular games like Sonic, the Mickey Mouse games, Aladddin, Quackshot and a few other popular ones, but never saw games like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Home Alone, James Bond 007 the Duel, Daffy Duck in Hollywood and many more for sale. Back To The Future 3 has 1 major flaw on the Master System though (never played in on Mega Drive): after 2 days of casual practice, you can finish the whole game in less than 5 minutes. And that's as an average 12 year old kid who just spent his whole month of chore revenues on that game.
      Andre Agassi Tennis Master System version arguably is the better version on every aspect except for sound. Just going by screenshots, you'd easily assume the 8 bit version is the 16bit and vice versa.
      Sonic 1 still is a marvel in terms of pumping out a well playing, high paced, great looking platformer on an 8 bit console.
