I been watching Mr. Chickadee's channel for around 4~5 years, so I chose to watch this with the sound off! A man's gotta have at least one tradition. If I ever attend his class, I plan to wear multiple ear-plugs.

Josh is exemplary but rare. His virtues are so numerous I can't recall all their names. Therein lies the problem. He can never be a model to aspire emulation because almost none of the rest of us are capable of his achievements. Don't take these comments as criticism of him. Each time I watch him work my entire being wants to spring into action, grab a tool, then get to work. So here is my suggestion: find a way to support him in his work, Whatever... just do it. What you will be doing is providing one of those rare superstars of humanity the means to demonstrate just how magnificent one human being can be. This is not a joke, folks, this man is the real deal. Do it.

Hi Josh, Mr Chickadee, first time to to hear you speak. Been watching your videos from day one I think. I have a lot of respect for a man who can learn you the skills you have from nearly nothing in a few short years! I am an old school shipwright and hand tools are my passion and I just love showing and explaining how they work and be more useful in a lot of projects than modern tools. My 80 year old Stanley 55 can be set up and have the moldings done before you can find all the bits and tools to change them for a modern router table!
Love your videos Josh, dialogue is not needed, the sound of wood being worked is all i need!

Very nice, that you visited Josh aka "Mr. Chickadee" at home! I've subscribed to Josh for a long time and am addicted to his videos, but there's these videos in my opinion, only in pharmacist dose, sparingly administered in μGramm! I could not get enough if it was up to me.

    Best regards from Austria!

The same knowledge apocalypse happened to European martial arts with the advent of the firearm. Unfortunately sometimes a new technology is so revolutionary that it almost completely eradicates the old stuff - but in fairness to those crafters who took up power tools, they were trying to make a better living than they had been.
One thing I do like about Japan is their "living national treasure" program where they pay traditional craftsmen to keep doing things the old way just for the sake of cultural preservation.

"There is no romance in using an axe to fell a tree, for them its just work." Such a true statement. So often times I find myself wishing I had the time to use hand tools only but the need to just "get it done" always seems to prevail. I am so happy that people like Mr. chickadee are around doing what I wish that I could!

Thanks for this interview. I've enjoyed watching Mr Chickadee for a few years with my family- peaceful, educational, and enjoyable videos. It's encouraging to hear he started without any knowledge- gives me hope! Refreshing to hear such a talented guy being so modest. Glad I found your channel, too. Now I'm going to start watching more of your videos.

Maybe it's just the women I know, but the most impressive thing to me is that he has a wife that would be willing to live in a tent while they made a cabin with hand tools.

Thank you Mr Ckickadee, that one sentence saved me 2 or 4 years. I am working with my Dad and brother to repair a barn on the homestead my grandfather built. 40 years after I started work in the city, the 3 of us have rescued it, on 34 inch x 45 foot poplar. We finished the last of Sept. My idea was to use the largest wood, closest to the barn. The sentence - was - "run a bevel to the center and the wood will dry straight and not crack".

I very much agree with Josh concerning the old vs. new tools. I, too, enjoy old tools and firmly believe the steel was so much better. When I was a kid my Dad was a farmer/rancher that did a lot of blacksmithing.....he could do anything with steel. I so much miss seeing him at the forge making something that he needed. I basically grew up living the way Josh lives now and it was a much better life. P.S. Love your kitty-cats......I lost my little buddy this fall...she was 18+ years old and your cats remind me of her....best cat in the world.

What a great interview video. Nice to learn something about my favorite wood working sensai. Having recently added "sub-title" commentary to his videos, Josh has helped me learn a lot more than just hearing the music of blade & mallet vs wood. He has the most serene and relaxing videos I've yet come across that can teach well without oration.

Mr. Josh Stevens, quisiera dejar constancia de ciertos aspectos que me han impresionado: your audacity facing an artistic job that does not come from inheritance. Your ability to have learnt Eastern technology (European also) for which it's necessary to fully invest, apliying even the tradition to work on tools that seemed relegated to our horrible fukin' times. And as if that weren't enough "dando muestras de una actitud humilde y sincera, nos ha regalado esos espléndidos videos, que han tocado el corazón de muchos miles, entre los que me encuentro" (your wife will translate to you).
P.D.: I take my hat off to Mr. Chickadee (Poecille atricapillus; Carbonero cabecinegro) and your wife, in delighting us with your quite & unique job. Keep on going with no other sound than that of the Nature that surrounds you. God bless you both.
