Its been a while since rebuilding my doors but could you have just removed the door trim while the door was still on the car, removed door trim& vapour barrier and moved the door rods out of the way to get space to install the door handle properly? I just can't remember...
Certainly you can do it that way, but with that fastener you are now fighting with gravity. It is easier to lay it down on a stand. However absolutely there is more rhan one way to do it. 😊
