There can be poetry in any project; the image, the required work and the process of conservation. This painting of a few poor souls adrift, heavily damaged and worse for wear perfectly mirrors this moment in the studio where motivation is waning, the impetus to focus and dive into complicated projects just isn't there and a general malaise has settled. So how does one find a way to drum up energy and interest, how does one chart a course home... well, you'll just have to watch to find out.

I really love how your audience has to completely trust you about everything you're telling us. We can tell that the varnish goes away but don't exactly know how to tell that all the varnish is off, we don't know whether paint coming up is actually overpaint, sometimes it looks like paint is coming off with the varnish, and I have absolutely no clue how you manage to only get up the extra fill-in medium without taking all of it off. It's really cool that we can take your word for everything because you build that trust with us. I can't think of any other creators on TH-cam who have that relationship with their viewers.

As Julian works, I imagine Heaven, filled with the artists whose paintings he has conserved. I imagine Julian, one day, in the very distant future (after a long and joyful life lived) being greeted by those artists upon his arrival. To happy tears, firm handshakes, gentle pats on his back and good natured laughter - Julian hears a chorus of “Well done. Well done. Well done.”

I sat down and watched with the kids. It was absolutely emotional watching the varnish come off and the sea roar to life. I got the painting for the faces of the two Mariners. Even with the varnish and the terrible condition the canvas was in I had to have it. It just spoke to me. I am shocked and pretty darn excited!"

This restoration was amazing! Some of your clients must burst into tears when they get their painting back.

I think my favorite part is always when the varnish comes off and you can see the real colors of the paining.

This is the first video I've seen on this channel, and watching the center man's hair emerge from under the old varnish felt almost profound. It's something about showing devotion and care to an inconsequential object that feels like a deeply human love, like finding a piece of masking tape on the side of a doorframe and knowing that someone was there before you and they were as determined as you to treat it well even though it was not necessary

I’m continually amazed at the finished restoration. It’s often difficult to believe it is the same painting. This is one of those restorations that is stunning to see the difference.

You were talking about pretending to be a tailor. Whilst I'm in no way a seamstress, I do sew a lot, both modern and historical projects, and I just know that bolt of Belgian linnen fabric is *hella* expensive. Linnen is expensive in general, but that width, and that quality and that quantity, dear god that must've cost the equivalent of both my kidneys.

Julian, since discovering your channel I have assembled an impressive toothbrush collection since ONE toothbrush doesn’t do the job of cleaning and polishing every single different tooth. Your work, narration, skill, and dedication purifies my very own convictions of change-the delicate tension between then, now, and the future. My world is more vibrant after viewing one of your restorations, essentially restoring my own energy to pick up my paintbrush and start painting again after a long, unnecessary hiatus. Thank you.
