Great review for us shorties! I am 166cm and ride a gs 1200 rallye. Off roading taught me to only ever put one foot down. A further option is to lose 20mm from the seat. I had mine done by a specialist in S London- 1hour and has made no difference to the comfort but plenty to my confidence. Happy riding!
Just wanted to thank you for your reviews of the 276cx. I read the original one a while back, as I was keen to see how much of an improvement they made since the original 276c. I bought my 276c around 2008 and always liked it and never had a problem in comparison to my Montana 650T. I watched your later report and after much thinking have decided to buy the 276cx instead of trying to adapt an Android tablet. I know a lot of people bag the controls but I am familiar with them.
The fact the engine is so low helps a lot with your tips. The bike is really stable. I would love to try that in a bike shop unfortunately the one where I live do not have R in shop. Only S.
Haha, great if it also works for you. In summer when it's hot you can also quickly get out of your sweaty motorcycle pants an into some other shorts, without standing in your underwear somewhere in the public! ;-)
Nice to see you been to Fånö - i live in Enköping! I`m a adventurecyclist and photographer, but are upgrading myself to be a AdventyreMotorcyclist, going to retire myself next yer...so looking forward to get me a bike! Interested of your bike, i am 180 cm so that bike vill surley be nice to me! Got to check out your other videos - so thanks for the upload!
Thanks for the vid! I mentioned in a previous video, I reckon the seat and plastic cover under the seat are very wide too. I think shaving a bit of width off on either side would make things much easier too.
Really useful. Thank you. Height of this bike is what has put me off as like you I am short. Still haven't been able to even get to sit on one. It's a great looking bike. I wonder if KTM will eventually offer it with fully customisable electronic WP suspension like on their bigger bikes? Liked your table analogy very much, two short legs, one short leg ..... LoL. Btw "height" is pronounced just like "night" with an "h" instead of an "n" at the start. The "e" in height is silent.
Not KTM. Why should they, the standard suspension is great as it is and an electronically adjustment will drive up the price even more. You might get it from Öhlins, but then again: is it worth the premium add-on?
Hi mate, out of interest how tall are you? I'm 1.7m and wondering about the height. Do you think the two piece seat is more/less/same comfortable than the standard or low one piece seat when going on long rides on the motorway?
Has anyone ever told you that your a funny guy? In your own way you have me laughing. I wish you all the best and luckily your not having to manage the weight of a big BMW GSA LOL. Looking forward to more videos
Indeed he is! But yet another concise and useful video. Good point raised about the price for the R over the base model to. I would not buy the lesser suspension of the base model without adjustment (though it is clearly good). If it was adjustable then the debate out seat height vs overall expectation of use might be another matter. Think the T700 is coming with that fine adjustment and greater height trim accessory options (when eventually it arrives!).
You could say of course that I might not need adjustment at all. I am in full gear about 80kg, so that is what is normally the standard weight manufacturers are using for their calculations. Also I am not at all an aggressive rider. What I don't get is how two of my friends, both in the +130kg class, can ride an Africa Twin respectively 1290 AdvR without making any adjustments to the suspension? I recommended them even a harder spring, but I guess they have simply never tried how much better the ride gets once the suspension is optimized!
How did you solve the issue of putting up the kickstand on the ADV R? I'm going to try the shorter seat at the dealer. I have the same inseam as yourself. I don't have problems getting the kickstand up on my 1200GS.
I can the kickstand up (but not safely) ehen sitting on the bike. The better way (as long as there is no luggage on the bike): Stand left of the bike, turn handlebar all to the right stop, put up the sidestand, swing right leg over while bending sligtly forwards / downwards. You see thst in the video at 05:30.
I'd say they are completely different bikes. The 790 feels more like a 690 on steroids, while the 1090 is a bigger bike in any sense. I am happy with my choice and I am totally convinced that the low tank is one of the best design features of the bike!
@@kai-uweoch1159 I currently have 990 and 690 supermotos. I have kids 1100 miles away and selling the 990 for long distance bike to get there. I like the 790 but probably to small for my needs.
grimgr For a really long roadtrip you will need to wait a few more weeks. July 21 I am starting a trip to northers Scandinavia. What I can say so far: under really windy conditions and riding a dualsports helmet with a shield, motorway speeds are hardly bearable, lots of shaking and a bad headache after an hour. For that long trip I will use a flipup. No problems otherwise. Very low fuel consumption of below 4l/100km at speeds 80...90km/h on small roads.
Weird, i have both the 2 piece seat from the S version and the one piece seat of the R. The R seat gives me easier contact to the ground than the S version seat because its slimmer. I'm 1m75.
S Fade All the long tours I have done so far I did with the two-piece S seat. That one fits me quite well, but I am also cheating a bit, using padded bicycle tights. The foam in both seats is quite firm. Guess it really depends on your anatomy!
Tim Bjerenius Depends on how you define „offroad“. Sweden has tens of thousands of kilometers of unpaved public roads, logging roads and two lane tracks of variable standard, all of which are legal to use as long as the land owner has not decided to close them for the public. If he receives a government benefit for maintamance (e g they are required to access certain settlements) he cant close them. Offroad in the meaning of terrain is legally off limits, so no riding on single trails, straight through the woods, along the beaches and similar.
How tall are you? In centimeters please, not inches :) I am about 174 and I tried the standard model yesterday and I found it high enough. Though I need your advice, do you think that with the lower seat option of the R, that is also narrower, I could handle that? Even in the city traffic? Or will it be too uncomfortable? Thanks.
Julien Pham Hello Julian! I am 1.71m and buying my jeans in 30” inseam lenght. Of course I can not get both feet flat down on the R, not even close. If you really value that you should tske the S model, which is capable enough even on bad roads. It’s really up to personal preferences and training. I never felt the R to be difficult to handle in city traffic, but I am rarely riding there. It’s more when it comes to unplanned stops on uneven surfaces where my short legs and the high seat height of the R are a bad combination! But in worst case: drop it on the side, the bike can take it. Just pull out your foot in time... ;-)
@@kai-uweoch1159 Thanks for the answer. The thing is, I never tried that. So I do not know if this is doable for me or not. I should try that on the standard adventure at the reseller. Even if the bike is lower, does not mean I cannot try that. I guess this is doable. Probably most women do that with trails.
Very nice video and great points. In general the standard suspension vs R in stock setting the standard will be better for road use in every category: breaking handling and over all safety. Granted you could tune the R suspension for road then it's not different from the standard but there is a chance of making mistake or messing it up. I am sure KTM thought about it and specifically launched a standard knowing it's better for road as they claim: standard the best touring bike off road capable, R the best off road bike touring capable. If people are not climbing mountains the standard would be a safer choice.
The 790R is very good on road, plenty stiff enough to do what any one would need to do, the standard adventure is more of an entry level bike, it's suspension bottoms out on any decent sized bumps, it all depends on what your doing. I love my 790R it's a great package and is really like 2 bikes in one.
@@jimenagulla9081 entry level that is just like 1000€ less or even less difference :) that is expensive for an entry level bike. Though I would love to have the R version. But yesterday when I went to ktm and tried the standard one (they do not have R in shop) I found it a bit high (I'm 1m74) and so I thought the R will be too high for me. So any tips would be great. Wonder if with the smaller seat height option which is also narrower I could handle it or if it will be too high for day to day use...
@@harf4ng I would stick with the 790 s if your not riding on tough off road trails the standard should be fine.I meant entry-level in that it's suspension is geared more toward gravel roads and the street, still a great bike! Agree with all you say, in the countryside and offroad it is no issue, especially with low tanks. Much easier than fully fuelled Africa Twin. But in the city (where I live and ride a lot) there is often no planning time, so I chose the S. it works fine offroad too, in practise rather than theory. I can land either side immediately. My inseam is 32”. If I was offroad mainly I would have bought the R. Better to be safe in the city, if you fall here, cars do not stop! Thank you for the videos, keep them coming. Love the auxiliary lights 👍
Stopping in the city I have never seen as a problem. Much harder is stopping out there in the woods, where you not on more or less even pavement and maybe in worst case just need to stop over a puddle. Or the trail is leaning to one side, not much to chose from then. That's where things get interesting! ;-) I don't know where you live and how traffic is there, but the secret in city traffic is sufficient distance to the car in front of you and a good sense for balance. Sometimes I am trying not to put a foot down at all when I need to give a right of way, just rolling veeeeery gently forwards. Works nicely, never had a critical situation there!
Kai-Uwe Och I grew up on farm bikes so off road is all standing and no sweat and natural for me.. City here is fast reactions and unpredictability. Also I am older than you, so become less supple, ha ha. But I think it is good KTM gave us the choice. Other manufacturers could learn from this. Ride well my friend. I always enjoy your videos. 👍

@@kai-uweoch1159 so this means with my 1m73/74 and the lowest seat option I could handle the R? I wonder, imagine we're on the left side of the bike and we push too hard and the bike is leaning right, is it fast enough to move our ass on the right side to have the full foot an right side instead of left? And is it safe enough in a city when we're riding between cars and sometimes have to stop just between two cards? I would not like bumping on a car because I lean too much on a side... :) thanks
