Back in 1979 we fitted a 327 chevy engine ( from an opel diplomat V8 ) with a 4 speed gearbox into a Capri 1500XL . We upgraded the brakes and suspension ( and rear-axle for longer gear ratio ) , and this was a real beast at the time . 230 DIN horsepower and 43.0 kg/m torque in a car weighing just 1200 kg . Those days we used to go to the Zandvoort racetrack as visitors a lot , and one day Arie Luyendijk ( Indycar indianapolis winner in 1990 and 1997 ) was there . He liked the car , and asked if he could take it out for a lap . Well , it seemed that we did a good job , apart from the brakes , as when he came back in the pit , the front brakes were actually on fire . And he told us he went straight on where he was supposed to take the chicane ( panorama bocht ) haha . But fast on the straight it was . I overtook a friends Mercedes 450SEL that was driving at top speed . No way i would try that now , the straight line stability at speeds over 200 km/h was frightening absent . But great memories
Had one of these when I was 17, it was given to me. Had NO IDEA how fast it was until I took it out the first time, it looks so pedestrian! Man, I had fun with that car.
I had a pair of these in the early 80s. The first was a 71 with a 1.6 liter engine - complete rust bucket, but it got me to college for a few years. The second was a 74 with a 2.8 liter V6. That was a fun car. I put some work into the engine - cam, intake, bored .030", Holley 390 cfm carb, and headers. It went from reasonably quick to pretty damned fast (for the era). The one trip down the quarter mile was in the high 14s, fast enough to outrun new Trans Ams and Camaros of the era. But I never considered an engine swap! Damn, that is one impressive ride. Kinda makes me want to go find another one to tinker with!
Thanks for checking it out, and for subscribing! We'll definitely be seeing more of this Capri soon, complete with new, even better engine! So much fun... poor tires!
Man this takes me back.... I had a 74 Capri when I was stationed in Germany from 91-93. I LOVED that car, but mine was green and an automatic though, IF I could find another one I'd rebuild it in a heart beat.
radical and wicked i owned a 73, 74 couple of 76 a 77 capri , also had a mustangII witha 302. they were all fun. i sooooooo miss that 73 capri brown with the glade sunroof been lookin for another one . thanks for keepin the dream alive that yellow unit you have is too cool ... nice job!
just awesome! its cool to see all the great cars you guys save from the crusher. The real clunkers are newer cars that lack soul.Keep the old cars, their awesome!
Our Scoutmasters 17 year old Daughter had one and I was 14 and she’d sit next to me and I could drive that through the neighborhood very fast. Young and dumb, lol. Very Quick little car!
I had a '74 capri. It was orange with tinted black windows. Mine unfortunately was a 4 cylinder (wish i had the 8 cylinder) - it was a great little car and fun to drive. Great video!!!!!
@motorcitypics Hi! Its my brothers car, but I'll try. Aftermarket motor mounts, Team Blitz, I believe. The rad is from a Volkswagen Transporter (80s). Just cut some sheet metal away that held the original rad. No need to chop up the rad support too much. About the only other piece to make is the driveshaft. This car has also been fitted with a 9-inch Ford Positraction differential. I almost forgot, the transmission crossmember / support is made from scratch, too. Have fun!
My buddy dave had a73 I think and it was the v6, that thing loved 3rd gear and would have been an awesome rally car as we discovered one day in the backroads around Caroline alta.
This was a cool looking car. I had one with a bored out 4 cylinder. It was faster than the factory 6. I blew my transmitting and traded it in for a truck. Dam I was stupid.
+Baxrok2 Nice! I also had a 1977 2.8 Capri II. It had to be the most fun car I've ever driven. Damn that thing could white smoke the tires off! Of course, I bored it out to a 3.0 and put on a Weber 4 barrel carb with racing headers. This old thing was a BEAST! It's the ONLY V-6 I've ever started up (even stock) that growls like a hot rodded V-8! These cars are gems!
I dropped a 350 Chevy motor in a Mark 3 Capri and I have to say it was monstrous, the Chevy conversion in a Capri is so easy and with tuning options galore, the one and only downside was the price of gas here in the UK
I looked at a '74 Capri in Los Angeles that was for sale about ten years ago. Had the original Blue California plates, and Yellow and Black, just like this one!
@capriv8 Hey, thanks for checking it out. Not really sure about power output of this engine, but Agent 8771 is putting together a roller-cam 5.0 for this car that should be interesting...
It should, it has been done before. :) From wikipedia: "South Africa" "About 500 Capris were converted by specialist Basil Green Motors to run the 302 Ford Windsor V8 engine. These models were known as the Capri Perana and were very successful in local touring car events, winning the 1970 South African championship and, in a different format, the 1971 championship as well."
wow cool car nice to see one kickin around i bet its a tonne of fun with that 302 in it!looks like she hauls serious ass!my buddy had a green one with the 2.8 v6 oh about 20 some odd years ago and that thing went like the wind too, what a fun car,too bad he sold it!
I never knew these were sold stateside, as you guys had the iconic Mustang. I was always led to believe that these were built as Europe's answer to the Mustang, and were only sold in European countries, and South Africa, and possibly Australia. There were many of these on UK roads in the 70's and 80's. I think there were 3 phases of production, in Europe anyway. The Mark 1, like the one in this video. Then the Mark 2, which lost the Mustang-esque side vents, and then the Mark 3, which was a much more streamlined shape. European production ended around the mid 80's I believe, but there are still quite a few cherished examples around.
Nice sleeper :-)) Reminds me of the old Sunbeam Tigers with V8's... had to watch they didn't flip from the torque and squarsh the driver [legend was that was not uncommon for the unwary]. :-)
Lol, had the '79 version of this car. Factory black Ghia interior, G85 Tangerine paint with 5.0. Bought it for 500.00. Supposed mechanic shop couldn't figure out why it ran hot. First year serpentine belt system w/ incorrect fan. 20.00 bucks later, ran ice cold. I was 17. W.
In South Africa you could buy a Capri with the 302ci thru local Ford dealers. It was call the Capri Perana & run the Top Loader with an Aussie Falcon rear end. They produce around 500 of them.
Nice putting the V8 in there. I had a 73 capri that had the original 2.6 v6...definitely did not have that power obviously but I had the most fun driving that car. Very quick and handled very well. Not THE most fun overall because that was probably my 79 Blazer (off road) but as a car, plenty fun to drive.
What´s not to like? The strong drivetrain gets the 302´s output all the way to the asphalt via those lovely slot mags - are they Wolfrace wheels? Even the finish on the package tray reminds the lucky passengers of the inside of a Huey! This was a vital recycler´s yard rescue and I salute you, sir : )
Iv only just found this very nice that v8 rasp the one john wayn drove in the film over london bridge had a 3L v6 they only put the v8 in export car ,s back then think south afria had there own plant keep on doing your thing 👌👍😎
Hi! The 9-inch is pretty indestructible; especially in such a light car. As far as I know, there are no traction bars on this car. Staggered shocks, maybe? It is not my car, it belongs to my brother. Good luck with your Capri build!
My feelings on the Capri have changed in a very positive manner over the years. Once I couldn’t imagine owning/driving one. Now I’m looking for one!
Amazing how far CWM has come over 9 years, and how fast the time flies! Would love to see an updated feature on this Capri!
Back in 1979 we fitted a 327 chevy engine ( from an opel diplomat V8 ) with a 4 speed gearbox into a Capri 1500XL .

Oh man, what a beast! As soon as you start it up, you know what it wants to do.
Had one way back! Loved every minute I owned it! Saved my life! Great car! Great video!!!
My dad had a yellow ‘74 Capri.
I remember it had a heavy duty map light.
That was a blast brought back fun Capri memories! We owned two 1974 four cylinder 2.0 and we had loads of fun with them! Thanks

Cool car for sure ...... and the operator knows what he is doing, nice to see :-)
If Mercury had made it THIS way, they would be legendary today.
I can see a highly modified race winner
No crap
They made them like this in South Africa.
They did - just not 'till the 80s in the fox body. Had a silver/black t-top 5sp 5.0 once.
@@joeblow2063 No, the South Africans did it in 1972, look up Basil Green on
youtube...
Love it! That's how they need to be driven!! Keep the vids coming
radical and wicked i owned a 73, 74 couple of 76 a 77 capri , also had a mustangII witha 302. they were all fun. i sooooooo miss that 73 capri brown with the glade sunroof been lookin for another one . thanks for keepin the dream alive that yellow unit you have is too cool ... nice job!

Yes Yes... and Yes!. I Never get Tired of watching this Video.
Easily smokes the tires into second gear too! By 3rd gear, it is going too fast! Love it!
shit brother, the strenght of that car, congrats!!
love the nürburgring sticker on the back :) nice video!
Our Scoutmasters 17 year old Daughter had one and I was 14 and she’d sit next to me and I could drive that through the neighborhood very fast. Young and dumb, lol. Very Quick little car!
Xtasy on wheels! Always loved the Capris.
Wonderful car and the driver knows his stuff!
Wow! It’s great at pulling those donuts, that’s Ford!
I remember Andy getting that car. Man time flies.
I had a '74 capri. It was orange with tinted black windows. Mine unfortunately was a 4 cylinder (wish i had the 8 cylinder) - it was a great little car and fun to drive. Great video!!!!!
Thanks for sharing your video. That is a beautiful car.
Very, very nice car, i had a 3.0 V6 GXL back in mid 80's wish i still had it
This video never gets old. He’s beaten’ on that thing!
man that Capri hooks up like crazy! funny how most ford's with a hot cam sound out back, under the hood have a very smooth and sedate running sound.
@motorcitypics Hi! Its my brothers car, but I'll try. Aftermarket motor mounts, Team Blitz, I believe. The rad is from a Volkswagen Transporter (80s). that car kicks ass
Had a yellow 74 back in the '80's. Looking for one to restore in Texas. Have had no luck. Great car you have...
TH-cam suggested I watch this vintage CWM video. Hahaha. Nice VW coolant overflow Andy.
My buddy dave had a73 I think and it was the v6, that thing loved 3rd gear and would have been an awesome rally car as we discovered one day in the backroads around Caroline alta.
I just love that car! Us Souther guys would say " It shits and Gets" Regards from Ody Slim
Thats a beauty. original mk1 capris are worth big money in UK now.
The only V8 one we got was the Broadspeed with a 302
This was a cool looking car. I had one with a bored out 4 cylinder. It was faster than the factory 6. I blew my transmitting and traded it in for a truck. Dam I was stupid.
awesome sound, pretty sweet doughnuts as well
Awesome sic!!!
Looks like a fun car
I had a 74 V6 2800cc Mercury Capri. One of my all time favorite cars.
I remember being in one that almost flipped on a corner when I was a teenager it had a v6 but it was still going 105
I had 2 Capris 73 and 76. Great cars.
Amazing video, awesome Capri !!
I dropped a 350 Chevy motor in a Mark 3 Capri and I have to say it was monstrous, the Chevy conversion in a Capri is so easy and with tuning options galore, the one and only downside was the price of gas here in the UK

That's affirmative....... does burn rubber! 👍
Coolest Capri video on you tube =D
Thanks! Will do!
Now that is the way a capri is supposed to be!
+Matthew Piper It would have been a great success had it been available w/ the 302 (5.0 l ) it wasn't, & was just a another 4cyl. car.
Awsome car I just picked up a 71 and i want to do this conversion do you have a build sheet and again great car
My mate built one of these here in New Zealand years ago with a 302. Sure as hell didn't leave the front stubs 4 stud though.
I had a 70 model with a 351 Cleveland GTHO Fase 3 in it was a rocket a death trap I was only 19 😎 crazy days
