  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite films, and in this video I examine how it makes the point that love is worth the risk of pain.

Thank you again for everyone who supported my last video. It is very much appreciated :)

I saw the ending as them accepting that the relationship will end but it's still worth experiencing again. Just because it ends doesn't mean the relationship wasn't successful. “Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.”

In Dutch there's a distinction between the warm (liefde) and the cold love (houden van) you describe. The last one (houden van) can also be used when you say you love a family member or a child. The warm love (liefde) is only reserved for romantic love.

Well done video on one of my favorite movies ever, Schloetz.
I don’t think Clem’s “meet me in Montauk” hints at a supernatural connection, though. I think the Lacuna procedure is simply imperfect. Remember the buffoonery happening in Joel’s apartment as his memories were being erased? Stan and Mary were high/drunk, and Patrick complicated/distracted the procedure as well.
There was a phone call in the Lacuna office that Mary answered about a woman requesting yet another procedure. A hint at the imperfection of the erasures.
Clem’s voice is just a representation of Joel’s struggle to hold on to his memories of Clem.

This video is beautiful, thank you :) Ive always related to this movie so much since Ive seen it. I watched it one time on a very late night drive from my childhood home to a new place, it was a big scary transitory period watching everything I knew packed up in boxes. In that home horrible things happened but I also grew up, it was a new and empty sad thing. Something that inexpicably made me fall in love with the world all over again, as I have so many times. On the drive it was raining and the tarmac was slicked, it was like that scene were Joel is driving when the credits play at the start. I watched the movie because my best friend and someone I was also in love with at the time loved it and I really wanted to be connected and grounded to them. All the movies I had downloaded related to them in some way, Ive listened to so many of their songs and so many of their films, my art and how I see art and beauty shifted so deeply into this like.. soft melancholy. But it was also full of loneliness and pain. Ive hung onto this movie for so long becuase it has helped me process so many feelings, heartbreak and fear, love and inspiration. This person i was in love with and I recently fell out and chances are I will never see them again and they'll never read this, although some bit of me sort of hopes they do. They treated me badly but I loved them, I will always in the way you love a distant thing. Watching them shrink away in my mind is terrifying and I think Im holding onto this movie so I dont lose them, even though I know they are gone and I dont have feelings for them anymore. I wanted to badly to be as close as clementine and joel are in the movie and I really really thought they did too but, things wouldnt have worked for many reasons. I gave so much of myself to them and they werent present. It hurts a lot to yearn for something so long and for it to fade away. I love them though. They changed me. It was worth all this sadness I think in some way.. not to say it hasnt hurt me a lot, I wish I wast hurting but... I really was happy with them and I wouldnt trade that for anything. Maybe it would hurt less to not have those memories but also.. like you said in the video I would have lost the good ones too, and love is always worth it, its worth it to love without remorse. Im in a new relationship now and scared. I dont want to lose them. I dont want the same thing to happen. Im holding onto this film again but in a more hopeful way now. It feels weird having someone love me and be present, its scary. I actually relate to clementine now. Getting bored, being impulsive, a lot of it comes from fear of losing them. knowing that fear is real and just that... it can co exist with me. That I can enjoy this and love them regardless of what happens is great. i think one of the kinds of a good relationship should be one that makes u excited about life, makes u feel really there and able to exist and even if thats without each other down the line you shared in something fabulous together.
I just love this movie. It reminds me of why I want to make art, why I do make art. It makes me want to take risks. Theyre worth it. To love is to say, you and I will say goodbye someday, but until then lets laugh as much as we can, i really want to laugh with you. And thats life.
I hope maybe someday I come back to this video with new perspective and get to fall in love with the world alllll over again.
    Ty for this moment

All parts of life are about risk, but love seems to be one of those parts where no matter how much you try to prepare for, to plan it out, to keep just enough walls up for, it still has the power to rip you apart in the most beautiful way possible. It's one of the most rewarding yet messy human experiences and that's why we choose it every time, burns and bruises included. That's why joel and clem chose each other all over again. This movie is very beautifuly written... really proves that when you go for it, it's the most beautiful thing you'll ever experience... even with the risk of breaking up, or not working for whatever reason... Of certian cirumstances... it hurts, you get scarred and it's the most painful thing you'll ever go through... Even with the struggles, I still truly believe that we're so connected, the idea and reality that we're meant to be... There's one in the comment mentioning "Remember me" and "maybe we can"... it hits me so hard and I feel so familiar with the toughts... It makes me believe that even with soulmates parting... there's always ways that we find each other and get back.. and know exactly how to avoid "pitfalls" as you express it in the video, Schloetz. But also how you learn so much more about yourself that you improve, how much your eyes open up.. and even if you don't like certain things about a person you deeply love... you start to appreciate them more because it's who they really are. Our minds is so powerful and so is our fears and feelings. We protect but also want the best and jealousy is a one hell of a thing.. but most important things of all, is trust. And that's what really matters, honestly, to me atleast.
I've never believed in it, never thought I'd ever think of it... but, I remember you asking me to marry you. and I said yes. To be with you together forever, I said yes. To never leave you, I answered I would not. To grow old and die together... and I said yes to that with not a shred of doubt. I remember so vividly.. and I have never had any doubt about us. Ever. I still don't today..
I love you my darling, Shaina.

My theory is that Clem got the same message about Montague from her memory of Joel when she was erasing him. Maybe she too was regretting it when she got to the beautiful memories they had together; Montague is the place they first met, so it's the place they both may think of to meet again.

Think its important to also mention that a big part of what caused Jole to go to montauk was also because his car still had the massive dent and mark from clem wrecking it. He had to give up everything that reminded him of her and that was the only thing left. So naturally she re entered his subconscious similiar to how going to the frozen lake made Jole re enter clem's subconcious.

It was an amazing movie and all of us "heart" people loved it. I was married for 30 years, and there were many beautiful things and many stupid and ugly things. We parted ways a while back, our karma was at an end the marriage was definitely over. I still call Barb my life partner, and we even talk from time to time, and I will help her a little. Just like the movie I do not regret our relationship and would probably do the whole thing all over.

    I’ve watched countless times.
It’s such a poignant & bittersweet message asking the age old question “is it better to have loved & lost than to have never loved at all”.
The ending hits me so hard. To know that there is someone you are so drawn to, connected to, and yet you both know it will never change.
To experience that kind of raw authentic love, passion, electricity with someone, while your souls are so connected you have to walk away. 😭

  • @ZeranZeran
    @ZeranZeran 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Beautifully said, and beautiful words.
I think this might be my favorite movie that involves.. well, love. Relationships. People. It always makes me think of my past relationships, and how weirdly similar they were to the one in this movie. So hot and cold sometimes, but also? So amazing. The best times in my life. I was so happy to wake up every day next to them, and so happy to hold them tight as we fell asleep. New love is a special thing.
I love Kubrick, horror, scifi, but this movie is something different entirely. One of the only things that can bring a tear to my eye, every time I see it. Along with the amazing soundtrack from Jon Brion, My God, man. This movie is just a masterpiece to me.
"Everything's a memory, with strings that tie to you.."

It may be that there's supposed to be something supernatural in them knowing when to go to montauk, but clem does say to patrick on the phone that she wants to go to montauk and joel might've unconsciously heard it. The reason clem started to freak out and call patrick to say that and eventually go to montauk the day after joels procedure was probably brought on by patrick trying all that. It's sort of ironic that the creepy guy trying to use her past to get with her would inadvertently cause them to get back together.

writes comment that will likely never be read by anyone to say that I don't think that love is joyful only because there is a risk of misery. I'd say that love and misery are intertwined, and any romantically-aligned true love such as this will always include both, no matter the outcome. You might be risking *extra* misery, sure, but your path to the end of your relationship will always include a fairly balanced mixture of misery and joy.
