- Kannada Language History
Kannada belongs to the group of south Indian languages, with several regional dialectical variations. The written characters of the language are derived from the Brahmi script, which is the parent script for all modern Indian languages, first popularized all over India through the edicts of Asoka. The earliest form of Kannada script is found in the Halmidi inscription, dated 450 A.D. Many of the Badami Chalukyan records in Sanskrit are written in this script.
Kadamba Script
The Kadamba script is the first writing system devised specifically for writing Kannada and Telugu. It is a descendant of the Brahmi script. The Kadamba script is also known as Pre-Old-Kannada script. The Kadamba script is one of the oldest of the southern group of Brahmic scripts that evolved from the Brahmi script. By the 5th century CE it became distinct from other Brahmi variants and was used in southern Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The creator of this clip doesn’t sound like a fluent/native speaker of Kannada (😀), so excellent effort! Kannada did not descend from Tamil (Malayalam did, a thousand years ago), and neither did Tamil from Kannada. Current scholarly conclusion is that they both had a common ancestor language and branched out from it between 1000BCE-500 BCE. No one knows what that ‘proto-language’ was called by its speakers, or what it sounded like, but based on well known phonetic transformations between phonemes. G, T and K, for ex. /g/ in a word in one language is /ch/ in another, and so it is highly likely that the source language had a /k/ in that or similar word. Linguists and phoneticians have done much scholarly work on this - for ex., see “The Dravidian Languages” by the great Bhadriraju Krishnamurthi, published by Oxford U Press, where he masterfully reconstructs words in a Proto-Tamil-Kannada and indeed Proto-Dravidian spanning all major Dravidian languages of today, including Telugu which was a central Dravidian language. Furthermore, one must not conflate a language’s antiquity with the script that it was written in. Ancient Tamil was very likely spoken around 500BCE as did Kannada, but Kannada’s writing before about 2nd cent CE has not been found. The ‘nisidi(memorial)’ shaasana of Gunabhushita in Kannada is now thought to be from 2nd or 3rd Cent CE. Tamil’s style of inscriptions in long texts was much influenced by Kannada epigraphy (See the great Linguist S. Shettar’s “Sangam Tamilagam mattu Kannada Nadu Nudi” and his magnum opus “Halagannada”, which I have read in full. Sadly both these greats are not alive now. K and T are both old languages with a long history of literature, next only to Samskrita (tamil 2nd, Kannada 3rd) among all the literary languages in use in India today

Use of the Kadamba script for Tulu is a result of German missionaries saving time and effort to use one script instead of multiple. In the Tulunadu region the traditional script was Tigalari which was used to write Sanskrit and Kannada too.

Kannada is a child of Sanskrit and Tamil. Kannada did not exist before c. 2000 BC. It is a Dravidian language of Vedic origin. Modern or Vedic Tamil is also a child of Sanskrit.
Archaic Tamil belongs to c. 6000 -4000 BC. It was the language of the Indus Valley and the Sumerian civilization. It is more than 3000 years older than Vedic Tamil and Vedic Kannada both of which emerged after the Aryan Invasion of India. Both are only found in the deep south and nowhere else in India or the world.
The Brahvi language in Baluchistan (Pakistan) is the sister language of Archaic Tamil.
The Sumerian language has numerous Tamil words. Ur means home town or native place, Aar means river, Ko means king and mountain, Ziggarat or Zigaram means tower, Kara (Kari) means black - Karakoram -black mountains literally, Arali in Sumerian means oleander in Tamil. The list goes on and on. The Sumerian period is roughly c. 4500-2500 BC.
The script of Archaic Tamil was the Indus script. It was used in Mesopotamia and in the Indus Valley (Pakistan).
Kannada appears suddenly out of nowhere around c. 1500-800 BC, which is roughly about 3000 years after the disappearance of Archaic Tamil in India and after the Aryan Invasion.

Sanskrit had no script when Tamil classic Thirikural was composed circa 25 A.D in the land of the Dravidians.
