    Ok so I had my driving test today. I got a serious fault within ten minutes. I had to change lanes, I checked my mirrors but made the change quite abruptly in front of a car. I realised my mistake and heard the examiner gasp. I knew I’d failed, and was half tempted to abort the test and head back to the test centre. I carried on because I wanted to see how many minors I’d get. I drove the rest of the test near perfectly and the instructor scribbled out the serious fault and passed me. He said he knew I checked the mirrors and said the satnav instruction to swap was confusingly premature. Given how I’d driven the rest of the test, he said he was going to give me the benefit of the doubt. So... don’t quit when you’ve made a mistake!!

      I had a experience just like this. 5 mins into my test i was told to pull up on the left i panicked a bit and drove on the curb under my breath i said shit and even he was thinking this is gonna go terrible. And i drove perfectly for the rest passed with 1 minor. Never give up people

    When I passed my test, my instructor told me "Now you will learn to drive" He was right. No hand holding, you're on your own. Everyday is pretty much a different scenario, doesn't matter if it's the same roads. 19 years later, I'm always trying to improve and refine my driving. Some people think after they pass, that's it, I don't need to learn anything else. They couldn't be more wrong. It's why I like watching these videos to learn something new or improve other aspects of my driving.

  • @nsoper19

    Myth 9 was not true for me. I spent my whole driving test in gridlock traffic so there was nothing I could do to fail. Barely drove half a mile in the whole test

  • @NFDIH
    @NFDIH 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    At number 2 near end of the video
    My deaf friend failed on driving test because she keep check mirrors too often. I find it harshly, I'm deaf too, us deaf people have better vision than hearing people. I driving for four years. I have no problem even pull over allow emergency vehicles overtake me.
    You hearing people growing up to learning from sounds and reliable on sounds, us deaf people growing up learning from visuals and reliable on visuals.
    It is just myth that deaf people fail to pull over for emergency.
    Deaf people can drive.

    Correct, examiners don’t mark wrong turns as faults. However, they do get irate if you constantly take wrong turns. As I did in my test a week ago. In fact, my examiner was so angry at my constant accidental wrong turns with the SatNav (I don’t know what happened, I was so nervous) that he started snapping at me and being extremely rude. “AGAIN... you have gone the wrong way!” At one point he sarcastically asked if my instructor finds me “difficult”. I considered pulling over and asking him if he has considered a different job - glad I didn’t because despite his attitude, he passed me. Apparently I am “an idiot, but not a dangerous idiot.” My navigation was so bad the test took almost double the typical duration - no joke.
    So for anyone nervous about navigation on their test: just be safe and ignore the examiner if he/she is behaving like a complete twit. As long as you drive safely, you’ll pass! I had only 6 minors.

      I had a pupil whose cunning plan was to distract the examiner by talking about sport (if I had been an examiner it wouldn't have worked, as I have no interest in sport), and his idea worked a little too well.
      We were supposed to take a right turn, but the examiner forgot to tell my pupil,, as he was so busy talking about rugby, so we went a long way down a road, found a road to turn round in, reversed round a corner with parked cars opposite (back then there were 2 manouevres on tests) and then took ages waiting for a gap in commuter traffic, while trying to turn onto a fast moving road.
      We started at 8.10 and didn't finish until 9.15, but obviously that's nowhere near as long as your experience.

    • @wariaatka5388
      @wariaatka5388 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An examiner can fail you if you’re taking wrong turns every time, because essentially you’re not even following the directions, which could be considered dangerous sometimes

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The examiner can only mark faults as serious or dangerous (and fail you) if you put yourself in potential or actual danger - so don't worry if you drive the wrong way. As long as you do it safely there should be no fault.

    • @TheStingyRay
      @TheStingyRay 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I feel like you should have been failed. What's the point of independent driving if you don't fail when you are unable to follow a simple sat nav?

    10:22 that just contradicts what y said. “Unusual pass or fail rate”
    So doesn’t that mean they also try to fail people
    To keep this rate normal?

    • @wariaatka5388
      @wariaatka5388 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      muhammad40000 I think what they mean is that there will always be a certain number of people who fail and that leaves about a mean number of passes and fails that is kept at constant, but I see where you’re coming from, because I actually thought the same thing, haha

      Very well done! The figures we quote are only an average of course - so you must have been a quick learner!

  • @ConquerDriving
    @ConquerDriving 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Although it's true that children learn faster than adults, as I understand it the learning potential between a 17 year old and a 30 year old is small. In my experience the reason older people take longer to learn on "average" is the same reason they are learning at an older age. Usually they haven't learnt to drive because they have no interest in driving or are fearful of driving and have only decided to learn because of a recent work or personal need (new job or having kids are two examples). Therefore I believe older learners don't take longer to learn because they learn more slowly, but because of the reasons they have been putting off learning in the first place.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are so many variables that determine how long an individual will take to learn to drive - and personally I still feel that I can learn something new at the same speed that I would have done when I was younger. The statistics don't lie though, so for whatever reason older drivers just need more time to get that pass!

    My driving instructors speedo is set like 5 miles less than it actually is, so if speedo says 30miles im doing 25-27 miles and hour so im used to just looking at the satnav since its more accurate so when i do my test should i just follow the speedo or satnav which is more accurate?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All car speedometers over-read slightly, so the sat-nav will always be more accurate. However, for the purposes of the test the examiner will be using the car’s speedo.

  • @rcs.tf89
    @rcs.tf89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    do you fail for slightly rolling back or if someone overtakes you

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A little roll back is normally a minor fault, but if it’s too far or too near a vehicle behind the examiner will use his brake to stop the car - which will be a serious or dangerous fault.
      If you are driving at the correct speed and a driver in a rush overtakes you, that isn’t a fault. However if you are driving too slowly and this causes following traffic to get frustrated and eventually overtake, it would be a fault.

    What are your thoughts on this situation? I had a test last month, I got a parallel park which was carried out with no faults. Later in the test I was asked to do a second manoeuvre in which I got a serious fault. The reason I failed was fair, I don't disagree with the reason, but why was I given a second manoeuvre? My first one was faultless... As was explained at the end. Really confused and frustrated me.

      It sounds like the test wasn’t carried out correctly - and if so you can make an appeal to get your test fee back. You’ll still have to book another test to get a pass though 😔 Ask you instructor for more information.

  • @goldenkoi23
    @goldenkoi23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1) There is no such thing as a minor fault, you need to be more consistent with using the term 'driver fault'. 2) when it comes to the 'myth' examiners have quotas of how many candidates to pass/fail then you should highlight the Civil Service Appeal case of DVSA Examiner Pete Murray in 2005 who was sacked for failing to many candidates. He states, "pressure put on examiners to get their pass rates in line is jeopardising road safety" You've got examiners totting up their pass rates every day and every week. If your figures are in line, then they leave you alone." I do not accept any responsibility if what I have quoted is wrong if the newspaper article posting this story, quote is wrong

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The term ‘minor fault’ is still commonly used by learner drivers so will not confuse anyone - even if the correct term is now ‘driver fault’. Of course there will be isolated incidents of poor examiners doing things that are against their guidelines, or making mistakes or errors in judgement. I personally believe that these events will be very rare, and if a candidate drives safely they will pass. I cannot recall even one occasion where one of my pupils was ‘failed’ unfairly - there was always a serious or dangerous fault committed and the outcome was fair. The overall message of the video is that if you drive safely you will pass, and we believe that is usually the case.

    • @goldenkoi23
      @goldenkoi23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Advance Driving School so it's not necessarily a myth then as it appears there is the possibility that examiners do have quotas and from the article I read it appeared that DVSA did not offer any defence to this as they reached a financial settlement with the examiner . Again I accept no responsibility for posting incorrect information should the article be incorrect. Regarding the use of 'the term minor' it appears that the term is actually commonly incorrectly used by ADI so surely an ADI posting an educational video should use the correct terminology as this would discourage learners from using the incorrect term too.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If 99.99% of tests are conducted fairly, and 0.01% tests are unfair because of whatever reason then yes, overall we would say that it IS a myth. Put it this way, if a test candidate makes no serious errors what can the examiner do except pass them? They can’t just make something up!

      Advance Driving School have you never asked yourself the question as to one day why an examiner uses discretion and the next they don't. Eg: candidate driving 23mph in a 20mph Zone, examiner says "what's the speed limit on this road" the candidate takes the hint and adjusts their speed correctly, next time you get "can you slow down please as you are driving at 23mph in a 20mph zone" maybe examiners do make things up and maybe they don't but one thing is 100% certain they are allowed to use discretion and therefore it is possible that they use this discretion when it is in their own interest to do so and not in the interest of the candidates.

      Well, between my wife and I we have probably witnessed over 100 tests from the back seat and have never questioned the result of a test. There is no benefit in questioning an examiners integrity - surely it would be better if pupils concentrated on just driving safely and trust the (much more experienced) examiner’s decision to be correct?
