- Among the many, many eyebrow-raising comments and clashes during the voluntary appearance of Ryan Tubridy and Noel Kelly, his agent, at the Public Accounts Committee hearing on Tuesday (July 11), an interaction with a Fianna Fáil TD was right up there.
The PAC hearing heard about Nigerian cousins, selling chocolate, Rock Gods, stacks of supportive letters to 'Ryan Tubridy in Dublin' and Tom Cruise, during the course of a three-hour hearing at the Oireachtas, in Dublin. The hearings have been ongoing ever since news first broke of a Grant Thornton review into payment irregularities at RTÉ.
Tubridy, who has not been on the air for his RTÉ radio show since the news broke, and Kelly asked if they could make statements to the PAC and Media Committees. One of the complaints both men had was that RTÉ rushed into making a statement on the payment reviews without properly consulting them. At one stage, Kelly asked why Tubridy, one of Ireland's most trusted individuals, he said, was 'thrown under the bus'.
Having claimed they did not have enough notice, the pair then had to hold up their hands for only getting a 39-page document sent to the PAC members at only 8:29am. Committee chair Brian Stanley [Sinn Féin] was the first, but not the last, to scold them over this.
Later in the hearing, Deputy Alan Kelly [Labour] said it was a 'major insult' to all the members to receive the documents from representatives of Tubridy and Kelly a day later than the deadline [Monday]. Up next was Deputy O'Connor [Fianna Fáil] and he tore into the duo for the late arrival of documents.
Noting that the PAC members only got the large, 39-page document from Ryan Tubridy and Noel Kelly's representatives just two hours before the hearing, Deputy James O'Connor asked the pair if they accepted 'how it's not physically possible for anyone here to comprehensively go through that sort of information'.
"That was unfortunate," Tubridy replied, "and I have to say that I do apologise to every single member of the committee for that."
"I has been a tortuous few weeks," he continued before O'Connor tried to interrupt. "Please, please," insisted Tubridy, "let me just finish my sentence! What's gone missing in the last few weeks, forgive me, is there has been a humanity bypass a bit here, okay. So, just bear with us.
"We have worked tirelessly to put this document together. We got it in when we could, and I apologise."
Deputy O'Connor accepted that apology and acknowledged 'from a human perspective, this is difficult'. "We're politicians," he said, "we know what it is like to be dragged through the river."

I can guarantee you, if RTE was a subscription based service these guys Tubridy, Duffy, Darcy etc wouldn't get nearly €500000 a year. The whole licence fee is archaic, the reasons that are given for being forced to pay for it are ludricous. The people should decide what they pay for and watch.
Totally agree, we have the same issues here in the UK with the BBC which strides the airwaves like an extinct behemoth from another time and place, £159 a year for total rubbish TV and Radio.
If either of them were left a few thousand short they'd be well able to question it 🤣🤣
O'Connor seems like a reasonable bloke. I don't think his line of questioning went anywhere but at least we learned that the "Renault" contract was signed before COVID.

This process is carried out by an oireachtas committee, effectively a government enquiry, because RTE is a public broadcaster therefore paid for by the people via taxes and the TV License. The TDS, whether they are suitable or not in this instance or otherwise, represent their constituents, ergo they represent people of Ireland, and we the people want answers!
The world is a stage .. Ryan Tubridy was a junior politician for years before he was a presenter let's not forget .. the top politicians are his friends, Ryan is also an actor but not a good one. How smug Ryan is when answering questions about not reporting the extreme extra money he received and is he acting like the victim.

Somehow I think these roadshows will not be happening.
Ryan's team knew exactly what they were doing handing all that 2 hours before questioning. They had it all prepared for 3 weeks, preparing for all possible questions, while the TD's had little to no preparation. You couldnt even read all that carfully in that time.

Because he didn't have to attend, the board couldn't ask for another day to prepare because Ryan's team would simply refuse. It's all very smart but shows deception.

Doesn't seem like someone with nothing to hide would do all that.

From this viewer in Britain, I have been reading of this case over in Ireland of late of course so too. Although of course I don't see RTE, I do remember Ryan Tubridy being on BBC Radio 2 some years ago on the Drivetime show then, which I know I heard at the time so too. I will watch and wait-thank you so too!

Is it not management, particularly those within the wage sector, CEO and top administration to decide on what is an appropriate salary for all of their staff, including their staff in those meetings, and not Tubridy nor his agent job? Granted, like the Government he is overpaid, but it's not Tubridy in charge of wages at RTÉ, so why is he getting the most blame along with his agent?
Tubridy was asked about the report he "Stayed up all night to do". Why was Tubridy doing the reports, that is what administration get paid to do. - Keep track of the payroll -Keeping track of staff turnover etc. If RTÉ administration did it's job correctly, along with management, the reports, would have been easy to hand in, as they all would be organized. Hence, Tubridy would not have had to do it himself, about himself.

I like Ryan Tubridy even more now! What a genuine and honest human being. I feel like people are making so much more out of this that it needs to be. I wonder is it simply down to nothing but pure begrudgery, I don't know but I believe he done nothing wrong more than maybe he should have asked more questions about the RTE salary reporting. Simple human error that would happen to anyone commenting on this video!
