A battle report from Rogue Element Gaming and a glass of whiskey makes for a fantastic Friday night.
Good game mates, nice to see Demon in the channel again, he is a complete boss, and the game is quite balanced in terms of play/tactic level.
Rules things... just the bigger ones:
- power familiar grants you +1 power dice AND +1 dispell dice. Stos should get 7 dispell dices, not 6
- killing blow only works against infantry or cavalry-size models. Not against monsters, chariots, monstruous infantry, etc.
- Dragon ogres have 4W each. The dire wolves needed to do 2, and not one, to kill one ogre
- If you charge with a character out of a unit, you can not charge with the unit as well. This is quite important. The unit can move, but can't charge
- you can not issue or accept challenges if you are not in base contact with the enemy...for example, the campion of the grave guard can not accept the challenge of the herd campion, because the undean champion is not in base contact with any enemy model. If you are in contact, even with models of other enemy unit, then you can issue or accept challenges.
- infantry size single models, like skirmishers, have no flanks (because they face the enemy that charge them)...until they are in combat!! once in combat, they have flanks and a rear like other units.
And about the "luck thing", the dice rolls and so on. I have seen absolutely crazy games in this channel. Remember an O&G vs Brettonia where the poors O&G didn't achieve anything, a ridicoluos game where dice ruined everything. But in this game....it is not the case. Damon had terrible dice rolls (like Stos) again and again, the first combat round vs zombies was awful, a miscast in first spell, several times getting 2 or 3 1s wounding on 2s...the develop of the game did't be smashed by dice rolls. The VC list has one mega-bunker, this bunker ends up out of position chasing the bestigors...that's it man, the rest of the BH army surrounds and destroys you. Getting trapped with the black knights, charging with zombies against spears (¡!!), putting all the power in the same unit...magic, even a huge amount of it, can not resolve everything. And Damon also made some mistakes (witch is natural, you are human beings) and the game was nice. Complain about every single not-average roll makes no sense in this case.
Hope see you fight each other soon. These are the best duels in this channel.

@@rogueelementgaming Man, don't take it that way. I really enjoyed this game, like most of this channel (and for this reason i keep up viewing them, almost ever the same day you release them). I have only pointed out that, in this case, don't think dice rolls ruined the game, like i saw in others (not your fault, of course). It's normal to be biased when you are being defeated, but the advantage of having a video makes possible to see the game again, and judge the rolls and decissions more fair/objective

Damon was obviously rolling good, and Stos somewhat poorly, but im convinced that wasnt the main deciding factor in this game. Damon actually totally outplayed Stos (for a change, in my experience ive felt its more often the other way around) in this one, on several occasions, and thats the main reason Stos got defeated. He really played to the strengths of his army.
But this was still one of the most enjoyable games to watch as of yet! 🎉😀 Such a great game!

I have enjoyed every single game between this two guys, they are soooo close in game level, are very kind, paint very good...everything in the same pot, can not ask for more. In this game, i think Damon take advantage of knowing better his army, and Stos pay the price of having only few games with his VC. I have made the same mistakes with my VC at the begining: charging with zombies, thinking dire wolves can win a combat vs a big unit, make a super-mega-bunker that ends up killing one unit and chasing enemys all the game long...these things are learned by being defeted. But is better to analyse it calmly instead of blame the dice gods... and make the same mistakes next time

Just a few things i saw:
- vampire hounds could not charge the herd after catching the centigors as they could not see them behind the hill.
- killing blow doesn’t work on dragon ogre or minos, just infantry and cavalry base models.
- the double charge on 2 different targets is not possible in V6

You mentioned killing blow against the Dragon Ogres, just to remind you that killing blow only works against man size models (though I think there may be some exceptions)

i think the trouble was that vampire lord was sitting in that slow infantry block and not doing much for most of the game. He shouldve left the unit - he wouldnt have been march blocked then, and could've tipped the scales on the big melee in the center!

Both armies are beautiful. You managed to keep the army look cohesive and the units unique at the same time. Props to you both! Looking forward to watching the battle
Killing blow doesn't work on multi-wound monstrous infantry or monsters my dude (there are some exceptions to this rule but they don't apply to models armed with a Wight Blade). Its basically just man-sized models you can do it to. I know it never came off but was mentioned both in the combat with the Dragon Ogres and the Minotaurs.

Great battle again guys! Thanks for bringing the content. Cool to see a different list again from Damon. Love to see a big monster like the Shaggoth on the table. Especially when he can't get insta-killed by artillery. Good sport from both. With your luck in the last turns, you're allowed a bit of salt there, Stos.

Just getting back into 6th edition after a short 20 year break, loving the battle reports.
Easily the best edition, pretty balanced, especially looking at everything before and after.. :) The team during 6th Ed did a pretty decent job and adding exciting stuff, the campaigns, Skirmish, general´s Compendium etc.

Thanks for sharing an absolutely MAGICAL battle! Damon really hit the upper end of the avarage with the dice rolls this time, but you still held until the very end!! And what an epic challenge between the Shaggoth and Dragislav, such a framing and conslusion! Love ever second of it!

Yeah, you’re right. I stuffed up the wound count on the DOs. Fortunately it didn’t make any difference to the game. I think I was thinking they had the same wounds as Minos….I’ll be making sure I get it right next time!

Recently subscribed to your channel and really enjoying watching the battle reports. I'm new to warhammer having gotten into it through the total war games. I Recently started collecting an Orc and Goblins army. Dunno if you do video requests, but if you do, would you be able to do a guide on warhammer fantasy table top for beginners, or where to start? I must say, disproportionate salt! I don't think Damon's good roles were relevant the outcome as they didn't come until after the game was lost (BKs charged by Drogres and Vamp out of position/march blocked). Damon does the Beastmen envelopment well too, and largely adheres to the adage "friends don't let friends charge unsupported". Many a point going into that Vampire Lord, if models are available a Count would mean another 10+ (very flexible, very annoying) ghouls could have done their dirty business. Also I am very keen on Stos ghoul voiceover so anything that facilitates that is a win.

Thanks mate. I’ve had the Shaggoth sitting in the painting queue for quite some time so I thought this would be a good time to get him painted and on the table. But I got to say that it was my “above average” dice rolling that really won the day for me. You don’t have to think too hard when they are coming up 6’s.

Not sure which combat you mean but Damon has Immune to Psychology on his Slaanesh units.
Shouldnt the Rank Bonus be neglected by most of the flank charges?
So the undead would have crumbled way faster...
Not all units *can* negate rank bonuses (though any unit can claim the +1/+2 bonus for fighting in the side rear). Units with the Raiders follow the rules for skirmishers (with a few extra changes) and, like skirmishers cannot not negate rank bonus. Units also require a unit strength of at least 5 to negate.

A random question: do you use the extend front/lapping round rules for winning combats at all (pg 77)? I don't think I've ever seen it in any battle report, either on your channel or any other, and I've had several times wondered whether I just dreamed that rule or if it really existed. It is a very weird rule compared to later editions for sure.

I’ve lapped around in one other batrep on the channel but to be honest I often forget to do it, or it may just give my opponent the possibility of killing more of my models and racking up more combat res.
In the first combat of shaggoth+herd vs skellies you forgot to coukt the herd's rank bonus for combat res. While beast herds act a lot like skirmishers they can specifically gain rank bonus of up to +2.
True, we both missed the rank bonus in that combat. It would’ve meant 3 skeletons should have crumbled instead of 1. Fortunately it didn’t make any difference to the game 😊

I don't quite understand your 'ghoul trap' with the black knights behind? Wouldn't he just be able to redirect the charge into the black knights after the ghouls fled?
From my side of things I was concerned that if I charged the Ghouls in my Turn 2 and they fled I wouldn't have enough movement to make it into contact with the Black Knights if I redirected the charge, which would obviously set the BK's up for a counter-charge. Now I'm am a self-confessed bad judge of distances so I probably did have enough movement, so I wanted to get closer and ensure that I was close enough to do so in the next turn - but the Unseen Lurker ("Nobody expects the Unseen Lurker!") did the job for me anyway in Turn 2.

I tend to err the other way and assume I'll always be in range, which can lead to some awful failed charges but at least by testing it out, I feel like I'll improve with the estimations
always good to see a good battle! Just one question: why going full command on VC? They never run, so the point of musician could be spent a bit better?
Mostly because I modeled and painted them. But also winning a tie and having the enemy auto brake seems pretty good.

Congratulations Damon for the victory (and choosing the only correct Chaos God)! Loved to see a Shaggoth on the table - So sad it didn't have the rules from the White dwarf test list (?), as it's really weak in its current incarnation. Again some questions/remarks regarding the game from my side:
1. Turn 3 when the Zombies were charged in the flank of the Gor-herd: Is there no panic check required for the flank charge, as the herd is engaged in combat?
2. Does Killing Blow really work on Monstrous Infantry like Minotaurs? If yes, would someone be able to give me a rules page?
3. @Damon: Why no Sword of Might on your BSB?
4. @Stos: As you said it yourself: The gravest mistake was to pursue with your grave guard, thus removing them from the game. This shows why "all eggs in one basket" does not pay off most of the time. Sure Damon did not intend to do this on purpose, but he effectively removed a big chunk of your army from the game. Stos, now imagine an opponent doing this with a ludicrous cheap unit: 30 pts leading your 700 (?) points unit around... I know, what I would do XD.
5. @Stos: Next time your book of Arkhan is not allowed to work. ...Always forgetting to roll the die... :D

1) The Herd wasn't engaged in combat at the start of the turn so no panic test required as far as I understand the rule: "A unit must test if it is fighting in close combat at the beginning of the turn, and is charged in the side or rear by an enemy unit with a Unit Strength of 5 or more." p.80
2) Killing Blow only works on "man-sized" models, which I assume to mean 20mm and 25mm bases : "This attack is only effective against roughly man-sized opponents such as Men, Orcs, Elves, Beastmen, etc." p.112
3) Points. Fighting Undead I wanted to get as many bodies on the table as I could when it came to Herds to avoid possible auto-flee. Might be a wrong to do so but I figure a few more Ungors as opposed to getting +1 St on the Wargor would be more helpful. Biting blade gives the -1 AS same as the +1 St would give...
4) I've learnt to avoid such loaded units if I can. Fortunately the GG + Vamp got pulled out of position so I could concentrate on taking out everything else. Otherwise I would have been in a bit more trouble late game.

Dear @@Rfreer53 I had a look through my White Dwarfs and other Source Books: I have to admit, that my memory betrayed me! The source I found is the Ravening Hordes List, but it did not contain rules for the Shaggoth - only for regular dragon ogres. What I thought was true for the Shaggoth (higher toughness, cheaper costs) is partially valid for the "old" Dragon ogres: They had toughness 5 and I falsely assumed the Shaggoth had a higher toughness (i.e. toughness 6), too. So, sorry mate to disappoint you! :( Regards FA

Nice game. All melee and positioning focused. Liked it. Questions about the fight between the dragon ogres and the wolves. The dragon ogres have 3 or 4 wounds? (i think i've missed one during a previous turn). Wich unit strenght has a songle dragon ogre?
Dragon ogres have 4 wounds and a unit strength of 3 each.
Dragon Ogres have 4 wounds. After the combat with the Black Knights I accidentally marked a model as having 1 wound left when it should have been on 2 wounds. I was probably thinking they had the same wounds as a Minotaur (3). So I wouldn’t have lost a model against the Dire Wolves and should have struck back….not that it would have made any difference to the game. I probably needed a handicap at that stage 😉
oh, and remember- you don't get rank bonuses when disrupted by a flank charge I think!
Unfortunately not with Beastmen Herds they have the "Raiders" special rule, which means they can get up to +2 Rank bonus but don't break ranks just like Skirmishers.
When a unit charges, a character has to charge with it. He can't charge out of the unit in the same turn.

May have not been correct by the rules but it was waaaay cooler to have the epic showdown at the end between the two Generals. 😃
@@damonb4505That could have happened regardless. Only difference would have been that grave guards don't charge on the same turn, which seemed like a whim anyway.

Would Vladislav have won his first combat with the shaggoth by 1 because he had a flank charge? Or does the shaggoth turn to face because he wasnt in combat?
Shaggoth ‘s do have flanks and a rear facing but you have to have a US of at least 5 to get the flank/rear combat resolution bonus. Unfortunately Dragislav is only US1.

I'm pretty sure a model on foot with full plate and shield only has a 4+ armor save, not 2+... Did I miss something?
Full plate=4+, shield=3+, hand weapon and shield (parry)=2+
@@rogueelementgaming I did forget the additional +1 for using hand weapon and shield. According to my printing of the 6ed rulebook: Heavy Armor = 5+, with shield +1, with hand weapon +1, for a total of 3+. Is the Full Plate he has better than standard heavy armor?
Correct, Blood Dragon Vampire Lords/Counts come stock with Full Plate Armor. Which is a 4+. Its equal to Empire Knights full plate or Dwaven Gromril. Pretty great!

Beast herds have a rule called "Raiders" that allows them to act like skirmishers while still being able to claim a max of 2 rank bonuses. Like skirmishers though, they don't brake ranks.

Did Invocation of Nehek get errata'd to allow it to be cast multiple times?
Any spell can be cast multiple times by different casters. Just not more then once by the same caster.

Yep. It refers to the multiple casting values/types of the spell. So a single wizard can't cast it once on a casting value of 3+ then try again on the 7+, or cast it once to raise a new unit then again to heal a character.
My third Try to comment, my German Keyboard in Kombination with my School Englisch (over 40 Year ago) and my Warhammer English (since 2nd Edition) killed Text by auto-fill up with absurd Words.......
