Just wanted to say, THANK-YOU!!!!, for your calm, logical, and easy to follow instructions. Your video gave us great comfort and confidence to install our new door. thank-you, Tom
Jacki is So right ! That inside the fireplace camera solved the only question I had about removal and did it perfectly. It had me stumped until your video. Thank you !
Thank you for the clear and concise video instructions. The angle from inside the fireplace when connecting the screen to the lintel was exactly what I was looking for. Great job!
Thank you so much! The fireplace in our basement has been boarded up since we bought the house. I decided to have it looked at and found out it was just boarded for insurance reasons when it was a rental. I love fireplaces, so I bought a door, but it's been sitting until I got the nerve to install it. I am thrilled with this video because now I know it won't be a problem. Thanks again!
Width and height are both important. When you go to order the door each size will have a minimum and maximum width and height it will fit. As long as your measurements are in between those you're good.
I know I am not talented enough to tackle this as a DIY-er, but your video was ver helpful in helping me understand the process. I want to replace my 30-year old brass doors. Do you know what kind of contractor I should hire to do this job? A handyman? A chimney/fireplace person?
Yea I was thinking to fabricate my current screen so that I had a door rather than having to move it all the time. But then I realized this would actually help so much with the outside noise so I'm considering getting one of these. My only concern is vibration if I'm playing loud music. Lol
wow you make it look that it is easy job, I wanted to ask my chimney is masonry and the inside tile some are cracked, the chimney guys are claiming that I have to remove the tiles and replace them to be safe, but they are deep in chimney about half way, what would you advice me to do? Is the chimney guy suggesting some expensive fix to make money on me? Thank you for you time and answer.
Just like a doctor you can always get a second opinion. It sounds like a reasonable repair. In the NE they push stainless sleeves with poured cement. Easy peasy, and only $5,000!
Thank you for your post. The fiberglass looking stuff that was put around the sides…is there anything that covers that or does it just there open to the flames?
@@HouseDoctorRay I had no idea. I never had a fireplace so all of this is new to me. I really like what you installed. (I live in Southern California) I would hate to start a fire in the walls. Thanks again for your post and reply.👍 I’m learning as I go.
See if you can find someone who just does cleaning and inspection. They won't tell you you need repairs if everything is fine. Also only burn hardwoods in a fireplace. Pine, Spruce and Fir leave behind a flammable residue.
@@HouseDoctorRay I was told about different wood and the drawbacks of some woods. So far I just use oak and walnut. Also some fruit woods. My fireplace also has a gas option but my late husband capped it off because he said he could smell gas. I couldn’t but I wasn’t going to take any chances either. Thank you for your advice.👍
Thanks for amazing video, I purchased the same exact door, but my fireplace has an existing metal frame, and a mesh curtain. Do I need to remove it? I will try to post a picture before and after
What kind of insulation is used on the inside around the doors? I need to replace the insulation on my insert but can’t figure out what to use. Any help you could give would be appreciated! Also, is the insulation exposed to the flame at all? It looks like it isn’t completely covered by the masonry around the fireplace. Is this a fire hazard or is the insulation able to withstand the heat?
The insulation that comes with the door is fiberglass. You could also use mineral wool. If you buy fiberglass insulation make sure to remove any flammable paper backing. The insulation is not in direct contact with the flame but needs to be non flammable.
It won't change how your fireplace works. You'll gain safety because the screen will stop large embers from 'popping' out. If you have issues with improper venting you should have a chimney sweep inspect you fireplace.
@@chris2crazzy If that is the case then doors may help. When the fire is almost out I close my glass doors and open the little vents at the bottom of the doors. This allows a small amount of air to flow. You must keep the flue open until the coals are completely burned out.
I have installed my glass doors and they look great, but I was only able to install the top anchors and not the bottom due to how my fireplace is tiled. Does the top two anchors support enough weight? Or do I need to do something else. It seems very secure to me.
Hello, I’ve seen on amazon that they recommend the the heat silicon but you didn’t use it. Is it necessary? Seems like that part can get messy for a diy’er.
If they are recommending it to use around the outside of the door I would not do that. These doors are not designed to be airtight. Silicone is not needed.
Hello. is it possible to install these doors on a fireplace that doesn't have the smooth brick like yours? My fireplace has some kind of stone on the outside and the stones bulge out and aren't even. I'm thinking I would have to do something about air leakage from the sides if that's possible.
Sorry, just saw this. None of these doors really seal. It depends on how uneven your stones are. The Pleasant Hearth is about 1 1/2" thick. If your unevenness is less than that you could scribe and cut, file or grind the edges to give you a better looking install. Again, sorry I missed this but TH-cam doesn't always send me notifications of a comment.
@House Doctor Ray I took a chance and ordered an open box from Amazon. When it arrived it had everything except the insulation. I called Amazon and they refunded me half of what I paid for the door, so I ended up getting it for around 100 bucks. I also brought a better better quality insulation which I saw people mention in the comments. The door was easy to install and looks great. Thanks!
Omg TY so much this video was extremely helpful. I have a question the expose instillation inside of the fireplace, once the log is lit will is cause a fire.

How do I keep smoke stain from bleeding through onto the brick and up to the mantle. I even added extra insulation but it still happened. Is there any foam or silicone that I use to make that cover air tight against the brick.
First thing I would do is make sure your flue is clean and your damper is open enough. No smoke should come in even without doors. Have it checked out by a chimney sweep. You can buy fire proof caulk at the home centers. Might be in the electrical or plumbing department.
Thanks. This was one of my first videos, recorded on my phone. Check out some of my later ones. I feel I've gotten better. I have lights now and a better camera but the stuff I do makes it hard to get good shots. I think I've finally figured out my audio issues with the ones I'm working on now.
Measure the height of the opening, from the hearth to the metal plate supporting the brick. Then measure the width of the opening. I am sorry to bug you; My fire place is 28” wide by 29.5” high. All the doors I see say 30” minimum width? This is going to go over the face of the opening, like your video, and the maximum face width is 41.5”, and the max height is 38.5”. You could try bending the end of the bracket so it will catch. Another option might be to drill and tap into the Lintel. Last thing I can think of is a piece of angle iron that spans behind the brick on the inside you could hook onto, ¾" would be enough. Ace, HD & Lowes all stock angle iron. The top needs to be secure enough to support the weight of the doors. The bottom isn't nearly as critical.
