I’ve heard you guys across the pond say Thanksgiving cactus & over here I’ve only ever heard Christmas cactus, so I looked up the difference. If anybody else is interested, this is what I found…
If the color of the pollen is yellow, you more than likely have a Thanksgiving cactus, and if it's pink, you've got a Christmas cactus.
The Thanksgiving cactus flower is flattened where it emerges from the stem, while the Christmas cactus flower is rounder as it comes out of the stem
Christmas cactus flowers are drooping with purple-brown anthers. Thanksgiving cactus blooms grow horizontal to the stems and have yellow anthers

I’ve added carnivore plants into my collection and my husband bought me a zero water pitcher just for those plants. It will over time be much cheaper than buying distilled water. I usually watch your videos while I’m repotting my plants. Thank you for all the tips on plants. We also enjoy your plant trips to plant stores and the plant swaps. Have a great weekend ❤

So many comments . . . First, I think that it's really awesome that Ross is getting into plants and supports your hobby. My husband tolerates it, but just barely. It's nice that it's something you two can share. I bought three small pitcher plants to try to help with the fungus gnat situation. They didn't do much to get rid of the gnats and (ironically and irritatingly) they had spider mites. I tossed them. I totally love nematodes, though. Easy and effective. I think bugs are definitely the biggest downside to having a large collection of houseplants. I have a lot of hoyas and mealybugs are the bane of my existence.

I was fortunate enough to get a ro system fitted in my kitchen for my carnivorous plants and I love it very much.. that said my brother was talking about how he drinks Zero Water (which I think its like a Brita filter type thing?) And how it’s sposed to remove all impurities from the water.. I was like surely not! Bring your water over and we’ll test it and compare it with mu ro water! And surely his water read 0 in mineral content in the water checker thingy and my ro read 1 .. QQ (Brita reads few numbers below tap water for anyone wondering)

In my plant room i intersperse different venus fly traps during the winter (I keep them outside in the summer, in New Orleans) and they do very well! I collect rain water from my gutters and it works well! I def support the carnivorous plant suggestions

I am old school I have never left my plants in any water I do not think its natural! We create an unnatural environment as it is which is stressful in itself I do like transparent containers (I have many orchids as well) and carnivorous plants I also have never had any bug issues (once in awhile fungus gnats ) I just prefer watering when its needed I have had issues with root rot but this is because I recuse plants and it appears that so many are sitting in containers of water I have about 170 indoor plants and many many outside plants as well (they stay outside) I really enjoy your long videos and yes I do clean as well as plant chores !

I ended up buying a water distiller, it has saved me so much money! Not only do I use distilled to water some of my finicky plants but my hubby uses only distilled in his cpap machine. For those of us in the US it was about $60 at Home Depot!! LOVE this video, I’m going to go search for that one to see all your plants, I don’t seem to remember seeing it lol! ❤❤

Had a manual RO filter added for my aquarium and it's pretty cheap, I was even having it in my rented house, I was hooking it for a day to my washing machine tap, made as much as I wanted and remove it. It's producing water quite slowly depending on your water pressure and the filter you buy, the cheaper ones will produce it slower. In my set up I can usually get around 50l for 12h.

I'm wanting to get my alocasias in semi hydro but know nothing about it so it freaks me out a little bit. 😅 How does fertilizing work? Do you just add a little bit to the water?

    • @mableleaf2445
      @mableleaf2445 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I feel you, I was very scared of Killing my Alocasias when transferring them to semihydro 🙈 but I found a very good Video (unfortunately in german) about how you do it safely and everyone survived and is thriving! You need to be careful to use the right fertilizer. I don't think it needs to be labeled 'only for semiyhdro' but you shouldn't use an organic based one, it needs to be on a Mineral basis otherwise the Plants can't use the nutrients in it. Everytime I water my plants in semihydro I mix my fertilizer solution with the same stats and fill the Reservoir when needed. As Alocasias are heavy feaders the solution I use is pretty high fertilized 😅 I still experiment with the right PH though 😑

I like tattoos that look finer and more delicate than chunky looking. They usually do a stencil drawing before doing the permanent on your body. So you can decide yes before going ahead. Always good to research good tattoo artists.

  • @Mittowz

I have the opposite issue with humidity. I need to run a dehumidifier to keep it livable. I live in between a canal and a big river. Ideal for my plants. Currently it's 85% if I leave the dehumidifier off. I strive for 50% due to health concerns but even that is too expensive. Plants do get used to your home environment, but when it gets to around 30% and lower, no plant is going to adjust to that when it's tropical by origin.

I am making 2 carnivore terrariums, one is a bog. I bought a distiller off of Amazon and I only paid $52 for it and it was worth it for my humidifiers, CPAP, cat drinking and definitely my plants. All my Aglaonema are in terracotta and some are over 10 years. I never use plastic with my Aglaonema

Do you have a spotlesswater station close to you for RO water? Cheap and cheerful refills when you like. Another option possibly could be to use fishntank dechlorinator.
I keep a marine aquarium and have an RO unit and the rejection rate to pure water in a lot from them. Fortunately, I can divert, store, and use this waste water in the garden instead of it going down the drain.

For whatever reason i have a really hard time with my pothos plants. They seem to be stagnant and sometimes brown crispy leaves. They’re all under grow lights, but don’t get much natural light. i wonder if this could be why. do you have any advice for a stagnant pothos plant?

Check out Aqua-gleam filters. They are sold for people who detail cars etc but attach to anything with a hozelock attachment or similar so very easy to use. They do a 30ppm or 0ppm filter and I use the 30 for all my plant watering needs. It’s an investment but like you, having lots of plants it does benefit them 👍🏻

No! Let it acclimate to your environment for a few months if it’s not super root bound. Try not to let it dry out fully. I let them dry out to about 30% moisture before watering. A bbq skewer is a good way to measure, you want it to come out mostly dry but with some soil crumbles still stuck to it. If it’s clean, it’s way too dry
