UPDATE September 2024 - I asked Microsoft during an AMA session at the TechCon365 conference in Washington DC (August 2024) for an update on the timeframe... unfortunately it sounded like it won't be September, rather it's going to be more like late 2024 or early 2025 :( You can always get the latest news on this topic from the article lined in the description: vtns.io/ytvm365devprog2024
I have a E5 developer trial tenant that I've had for a couple of years now. I use it in the organisation I work for to test out SharePoint and AzureAD/Entra code before deploying it to our main tenant with an A3 subscription. My developer trial was recently renewed in May for 3 months (until August), which was useful as I'm currently using it for a local test for AzureAD/Entra logins
Hang in there... the dev tenants are coming back in early 2025 (most likely)... until then, there's always a cheap Biz Essentials license ($6/mo) that's also avail in a 1-month free trial.
Yup... I 100% expect to see them come back. As I said in the video & the associated article (vtns.io/ytvm365devprog2024), Microsoft is working on a solution so they can they can offer them again. Last word I got (updated in the article linked above) was ETA early ~2025.
Yup... I hear you loud and clear... unfortunately we're just in a waiting game for the dev tenants to become available. But you can get a business essentials license that includes a 1-month free trial as an alternative: www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/business/microsoft-365-business-standard-one-month-trial
Hi Andrew, I have a Business Premium account, and it still says I don't qualify for the E5 tenant. Do you know if they took that option was taken away since this was published? Does it now need to be E3 or E5?
Not sure I follow... if you have a Business Premium license, then you have a M365 tenant. What option are you looking for? The benefit I'm referring to in this video is the ability to join the M365 developer program in order to obtain a M365 tenant without purchasing a license. If you already have a license (Business Premium), you have a tenant.
@@Andrew_Connell Yes, it is the developer account I wanted to test and do demos with the fake data that comes pre-populated in the dev account. Nestor is my favorite fake person to use in examples. Having a business premium license for my small 2-person business gives me less data to work with than the 25-user pack in Dev. (privacy concerns aside). I had an M365 Dev account created in 2021. Long story short, it is no longer accessible, so I was looking for a way to get another account, but as you say, the rules have changed since then. Just trying to figure out how to qualify for one again, and I thought you said a Business Premium License could qualify as a paid account that could be used to then sign up for a M365 Developer account.
@@HeatherMajors That's one of the downsides of not having the dev tenants - lack of sample data. Unfortunately there's no solution for that for now. However, keep in mind these rule changes you refer to are only temporary... the dev tenants are coming back. See my pinned comment as I updated it in September 2024. The skinny - we're expecting to get them back around the start of the new year.
@@Andrew_Connell thank you so much. I think I just misunderstood your video about what tenant had what data. I got you now. I appreciate the kindness of clarifying and helping me understand.
I have a Visual Studio Subscription , but when I try to join, I still get the "you don't qualify for a sandbox subscription" message. If anyone knows a way around this issue, I would appreciate it!
According to the announcement, it doesn't appear so: "February 2024 Update: At this time, we are limiting access to the Microsoft 365 developer subscription to developers and/or organizations with active subscriptions to Visual Studio Enterprise." devblogs.microsoft.com/microsoft365dev/stay-ahead-of-the-game-with-the-latest-updates-to-the-microsoft-365-developer-program/?WT.mc_id=M365-MVP-21083
Unfortunately, looks like September isn't in the cards. I asked this same question at an AMA with some people from Microsoft at at a recent conference and they said I should be thinking more like the end of the year / start of next year.
man Microsoft is a mess, I got stuck in this without knowing the WHY! will not touch anything related to Microsoft unless i forced to do at work. FU Microsoft
🤣 I mean, I get the frustration, but the fact this is due to a security & hardening the service, I kinda like that's the priority and gives me more confidence in using them as a provider. However, their communication could have been MUCH more clear on this one!

One thing I didn't call out in my video - the changes apply to NEW tenants, not existing ones that are being renewed. So you should be good to go!
Nice
I've just had training on Intune and having a test environment would have been a great help.

great summary, thanks Andrew!
Glad it was helpful!
Will any professional VS subscription do? Even the $45 one?
I'm not aware of a $45 subscription option... so I don't want to comment on your question incorrectly. I'd reach out to Microsoft to check on this.
Hi @Andrew_Connell, Do you think Microsoft will also move M365 Developer Tenants to something similar to the sandboxes in the Microsoft Learn modules?
No... I expect we'll see them come back exactly as they were before this "lockdown" happened.
Do you recon the free developer option will return?
Yup... I 100% expect to see them come back. As I said in the video & the associated article (vtns.io/ytvm365devprog2024), Microsoft is working on a solution so they can they can offer them again. Last word I got (updated in the article linked above) was ETA early ~2025.
The picture for this video has a spelling mistake....not sure if it's on purpose though 🤔 apologies if it is
Doh! Thanks for the heads up. Yeah... def mistake, but fixed now (might take a bit for caches to get it through...
It's affecting me because i can't get hands on experience in preparation for my exams

Nice channel🎉
Thanks 😁
Can i get a free developer program with Visual Studio Dev Essentials?
